Djokovic beats Pella to reach 3rd round at French

PARIS (AP) ? Top-ranked Novak Djokovic easily beat Argentina's Guido Pella 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 at the French Open on Thursday to set up a third-round match against rising star Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

Djokovic has won every Grand Slam title except the French Open and has made this year's tournament his priority. The Serb lost last year's rain-interrupted final at Roland Garros to Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

The match on center court was delayed and interrupted by afternoon rain.

"It's like deja vu from two days ago, you know, coming in and out and warming up five times, but it is the way it is," Djokovic said. "I'm just glad that I finished the match today."

It had little effect on Djokovic, though, as he swept aside the 83rd-ranked Pella in 1 hour, 26 minutes. He had 30 winners, broke Pella's serve six times and did not face a single break point on his serve, clinching victory on his third match point when Pella double-faulted.

The 26th-seeded Dimitrov earlier beat Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Earlier this month, Dimitrov stunned Djokovic in the second round of the Madrid Open, beating him 7-6 (6), 6-7 (8), 6-3 for the biggest win of his career. He also took a set off Rafael Nadal in quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters last month.

"I think he got more confident as he was getting big wins in last few months, and so he's a tough player now to beat now," Djokovic said. "Even though maybe his style of the game could be better on the hard court or faster surfaces, he's showing that he can play equally well on clay. He pushed Nadal to a tough three sets in Monaco. He beat me in Madrid. "

But Djokovic is confident he can handle Dimitrov in a five-set match.

"It's going to be very physical," he said. "All the hard work that I put into in preparations for this tournament hopefully will play into my advantage and will pay off on the court."

Acclaimed Indian film director Ghosh dies at 49

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Rituparno Ghosh, who directed award-winning films mostly dealing with the dilemmas of India's urban middle class, has died of cardiac arrest at age 49.

Ghosh shot to fame with his first film, "Hirer Angti" or "The Diamond Ring," in 1994. Then followed a string of Bengali-language movies that earned him 12 national film awards, including for best director.

Press Trust of India quoted his family as saying Ghosh died Thursday at his home in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Ghosh directed about 20 feature films overall, earning critical acclaim at international film festivals including in Locarno, Switzerland, and in London.

His 2007 creation, "The Last Lear," was in English and centered on a retired actor who is persuaded to return to cinema to reprise the lead role in a production of Shakespeare's "King Lear." Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan starred in the film that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

Bachchan tweeted remembrances of Ghosh early Friday, calling him a "brilliant director" and a "sensitive artistic mind."

Shekhar Kapur, director of the 1998 Academy Award-winning period film "Elizabeth," tweeted that he was "shocked by the passing of Rituparno Ghosh." He described Ghosh as a "hugely creative explorer on film."

Indian character actress Kiran Kher said Ghosh was a marvelous director and that his death was a "huge loss for Indian cinema."

The only fully reliable portrait of Frantz Schmidt that has survived, drawn in the margin of a legal volume of capital sentences by a Nuremberg court notary with artistic aspirations. At the time of this event, the beheading of Hans Fr?schel on May 18, 1591, Meister Frantz was about 37 years old.

This is an excerpt from The Faithful Executioner: Life and Death, Honor and Shame in the Turbulent Sixteenth Century, written by Joel F. Harrington and out now from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

In the medieval era, public executions were meant to accomplish two goals: first, to shock spectators and, second, to reaffirm divine and temporal authority. A steady and reliable executioner played the pivotal role in achieving this delicate balance through his ritualized and regulated application of violence on the state's behalf. The court condemnation, the death procession, and the execution itself constituted three acts in a carefully choreographed morality play, what historian Richard van Dulmen called ?the theater of horror.? The ?good death? Meister Frantz Schmidt, an executioner in 16th-century Nuremberg, sought was essentially a drama of religious redemption, in which the poor sinner acknowledged and atoned for his or her crimes, voluntarily served as an admonitory example, and in return was granted a swift death and the promise of salvation. It was, in that sense, the last transaction a condemned prisoner would make in this world.

Let us take the example of Hans Vogel from Rasdorf, who, as Schmidt wrote in his extensive journals, ?burned to death an enemy in a stable [and] was my first execution with the sword in Nuremberg? on Aug. 13, 1577. As in all public performances, the preparation behind the scenes was crucially important. Three days before the day of execution, Vogel was moved to a slightly larger death row cell. Had he been seriously wounded or otherwise ill, Frantz and perhaps another medical consultant would have tended to him and perhaps requested delays in the execution date until Vogel regained the stamina required for the final hour.

While awaiting judgment day, Vogel might receive family members and other visitors in the prison or?if he was literate?seek consolation by reading a book or writing farewell letters. He might even reconcile with some of his victims and their relatives, as did a murderer who accepted some oranges and gingerbread from his victim's widow ?as a sign that she had forgiven him from the depths of her heart.? The most frequent visitors to Vogel's cell during this period would be the prison chaplains. In Nuremberg the two chaplains worked in concert and sometimes in competition, attempting to ?soften his heart? with appeals combining elements of fear, sorrow, and hope. If Vogel couldn't read, the clerics would have shown him an illustrated Bible and attempted to teach him the Lord's Prayer as well as the basics of the Lutheran catechism; if he was better schooled, they might engage him in discussions about grace and salvation. Above all, the chaplains?sometimes joined by the jailer or members of his family?would offer consolation to the poor sinner, singing hymns together and speaking reassuring words, while repeatedly admonishing the stubborn and hardhearted.

Whatever their success in effecting an internal conversion, the clerics were at minimum expected to sufficiently calm the condemned Vogel for the final component of his preparatory period, the famed ?hangman's meal.? As in those modern countries that still maintain capital punishment, Vogel could request what ever he wanted for his last meal, including copious quantities of wine. The chaplain Hagendorn attended some of these repasts and was frequently appalled by the boorish and ungodly behavior he witnessed. One surly robber spat out the warden's wine and demanded warm beer, while another large thief ?thought more of the food for his belly than his soul ? devouring in one hour a large loaf, and in addition two smaller ones, besides other food,? in the end consuming so much that his body allegedly ?burst asunder in the middle,? as it swung from the gallows. Some poor sinners, by contrast (especially distraught young killers of newborns), were unable to eat anything whatsoever.

Once Vogel was adequately satiated (and inebriated), the executioner's assistants helped him put on the white linen execution gown and summoned Frantz, who from this point on oversaw the public spectacle about to unfold. His arrival at the cell was announced by the warden with the customary words, ?The executioner is at hand,? whereupon Frantz knocked on the door and entered the parlor in his finest attire. After asking the prisoner for forgiveness, he then sipped the traditional Saint John's drink of peace with Vogel, and engaged in a brief conversation to determine whether he was ready to proceed to the waiting judge and jury.

A few poor sinners were at this point actually jubilant and even giddy about their imminent release from the mortal world, whether out of religious conviction, exasperation, or sheer intoxication. Sometimes Frantz decided that a small concession might be enough to ensure compliance, such as allowing one condemned woman to wear her favorite straw hat to the gallows, or a poacher to wear the wreath sent to him in prison by his sister. He might also ask an assistant to provide more alcohol, sometimes mixed with a sedative he prepared, although this tactic could backfire, leading some women to pass out and making some of the younger men still more aggressive. Once confident that Vogel was sufficiently calmed, Frantz and his assistants bound the prisoner's hands with rope (or taffeta cords for women) and proceeded to the first act of the execution drama.

The ?blood court,? presided over by a patrician judge and jury, was a forum for sentencing, not for deciding guilt or punishment. Vogel's own confession, in this case obtained without torture, had already determined his fate. At the end of Nuremberg's chamber, the judge sat on a raised cushion, holding a white rod in his right hand and in his left a short sword with two gauntlets hanging from the hilt. Six patrician jurors in ornately carved chairs flanked him on either side, like him wearing the customary red and black robes of the blood court. While the executioner and his assistants held the prisoner steady, the scribe read the final confession and its tally of offenses, concluding with the formulaic condemnation ?Which being against the laws of the Holy Roman Empire, my Lords have decreed and given sentence that he shall be condemned from life to death by [rope/sword/ fire/water/the wheel].? Starting with the youngest juror, the judge then serially polled all 12 of his colleagues for their consent, to which each gave the standard reply, ?What is legal and just pleases me.?

Before confirming the sentence, the judge addressed Vogel directly for the first time, inviting a statement to the court. The submissive poor sinner was not expected to present any sort of defense, but rather to thank the jurors and judge for their just decision and absolve them of any guilt in the violent death they had just endorsed. Those relieved souls whose punishments had been commuted to beheading were often effusive in their gratitude. A few reckless rogues were so bold as to curse the assembled court. Many more terrified prisoners simply stood speechless. Turning to Frantz, the judge then gave the servant of the court his commission: ?Executioner, I command you in the name of the Holy Roman Empire, that you carry [the poor sinner] to the place of execution and carry out the aforesaid punishment,? whereupon he ceremoniously snapped his white staff of judgment in two and returned the prisoner to the executioner's custody.

Century-old ocean data provides further confirmation of global warming

May 28, 2013 ? A new NASA and university analysis of ocean data collected more than 135 years ago by the crew of the HMS Challenger oceanographic expedition provides further confirmation that human activities have warmed our planet over the past century.

Researchers from the University of Tasmania, Sandy Bay, Australia; and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., combined the ship's measurements of ocean temperatures with modern observations from the international Argo array of ocean profiling floats. They used both as inputs to state-of-the-art climate models, to get a picture of how the world's oceans have changed since the Challenger's voyage.

The Challenger expedition, from 1872 to 1876, was the world's first global scientific survey of life beneath the ocean surface. Along the way, scientists measured ocean temperatures, lowering thermometers hundreds of meters deep on ropes.

"The key to this research was to determine the range of uncertainty for the measurements taken by the crew of the Challenger," said Josh Willis, a JPL climate scientist and NASA project scientist for the upcoming U.S./European Jason-3 oceanography satellite, scheduled to launch in 2015. "After we had taken all these uncertainties into account, it became apparent that the rate of warming we saw across the oceans far exceeded the degree of uncertainty around the measurements. So, while the uncertainty was large, the warming signal detected was far greater."

Uncertainties around the Challenger's measurements were caused by the limited areas measured during the voyage; the actual depths the thermometers descended to; and the likely natural variation in temperature that could occur in each region during the voyage.

"Our research revealed warming of the planet can be clearly detected since 1873 and that our oceans continue to absorb the great majority of this heat," said researcher and lead author Will Hobbs of the University of Tasmania's Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science. "Currently, scientists estimate the oceans absorb more than 90 percent of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases, and we attribute the global warming to anthropogenic (human-produced) causes."

The Challenger expedition measurements also revealed that thermal expansion of sea water caused by global warming contributed about 40 percent of the total sea level rise seen in tide gauges from 1873 to 1955. The remaining 60 percent was likely to have come from the melting of ice sheets and glaciers. Prior to this research, climate models offered the only way to estimate the change before the 1950s.

Results of the study are published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

SAfrica: Mandela daughter talks about her father

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Nelson Mandela, in the twilight of life, doesn't talk much anymore, his eldest daughter says. But the former South African president, who wrote of his regret at being unable to devote himself to his family during the fight against apartheid and afterward, reaches out in another way.

"It's the hand that he stretches out. It is the touching of the hand that speaks volumes for me. And for me, if you ask me what I would treasure, it is this moment that I treasure with my father," said Makaziwe Mandela, the oldest of Mandela's three surviving children, all daughters. "It means, 'My child, I'm here.' It means to me that, 'I'm here. I love you. I care.'"

It could be the story of any family, this intimate encounter between an elderly parent beset by illness and a child with whom relations have, over many decades, been challenging or negligible. That the couple's communication has become so elemental also sheds light on the fragile state of a larger-than-life figure, revered for his sacrifice during 27 years as a prisoner of apartheid and his peacemaking role in South Africa's shift to a democracy inclusive of all races.

"My Dad has not been in good, perfect health over the past month. And he has good days and he has bad days," Makaziwe Mandela said Friday in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press in her home, where a bust of her father, made from bronze and the wood of a railway tie, sits on a piano in the foyer.

One of those bad days was April 29, when state television broadcast footage of a visit by President Jacob Zuma and other leaders of the ruling African National Congress to Mandela, who had helmed the ANC, at his Johannesburg home. Zuma said Mandela was in good shape, but the footage ? the first public images of Mandela in nearly a year ? showed him silent and unresponsive, even when Zuma tried to hold his hand.

Makaziwe Mandela said her family is grateful that the "movement," as she refers to the ANC leadership, still visits her father. The broadcasting of the video, however, was unfortunate, she said. Critics allege the ANC was trying to score political points by its association with Mandela. The party fiercely denies it.

"In previous visits, there was no need to take a picture. What happened this time, I don't know," said Makaziwe, a 59-year-old founder of a South African winemaking company that highlights two centuries of the family's distinguished lineage in its branding. She is one of four children from her father's first marriage to Evelyn Mase, which ended in divorce. The other three died ? one in infancy, one in a car crash and one from an AIDS-related illness.

Makaziwe said the "dignity and privacy" of her father, also a father to the nation, is sometimes under threat, complaining that 20 journalists one day in May converged on her father's home, where he receives medical treatment, after an ambulance left to fetch medicine from a hospital.

"This is really utter madness," she said. "This thing that everybody has got to be the first one to hear when Nelson Mandela goes, it's not right. All of you will have your opportunity. You will get the news from the presidency at the right time."

During Mandela's recent hospitalization for pneumonia, which ended April 6, Zuma's office issued brief, regular updates on his health. On some past occasions, conflicting reports from the government contributed to mistrust between authorities and the media.

Fascination with Mandela stems from the sense that he is on a par with others whose human shortcomings were overshadowed by their contributions to humanity, including Indian independence hero Mohandas Gandhi and American civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

South Africa has held peaceful elections and is a major economic force in Africa, but struggles with high unemployment, crime and corruption. Nelson Mandela embodies a morality and unity of purpose that makes South Africans nostalgic for an earlier era of promise.

"He has something that people gravitate to, that they can hold to, that gives them hope," said Makaziwe Mandela, comparing him to Mother Teresa. "That's what Nelson Mandela has done, is to give people a better hope that, 'I can be somebody. Life today can be better than yesterday.'"

Makaziwe's home is in a comfortable suburb of Johannesburg that, as she pointed out, was barred to blacks in the apartheid era. Sculptures ? a gift from Gabon, presents brought by a son returning from Sweden ? lined a mantelpiece in the carpeted living room where she sat for the interview. Her daughter, Tukwini, worked in a nearby room on the "House of Mandela" wine business, which launched this year in the United States.

The Mandela name has lost some shine because of a legal dispute over control of two companies that pits Makaziwe and Zenani Dlamini, a daughter from Mandela's second marriage to Winnie Mandela, against old associates of the Nobel Peace prize laureate, who has withdrawn from public life. The firms, directed by associates who say they were appointed at Mandela's request, hold funds from the sale of handprint artwork by Mandela that is earmarked for eventual distribution to his family.

In the AP interview, Makaziwe Mandela would not discuss the court case.

She talked about the strain and stress of losing her siblings and having a charismatic father whose devotion to justice and equality came at the expense of his children.

"I'm sure now, in his twilight years, that he looks back and says, 'You know, I could have done that differently,'" Makaziwe said. "He has regrets in life, mostly about his family. He was not there as a father. He tried the best way that he could when he came out of jail. But you understand that my father came out of jail and was swallowed up even before he became president. He never really had the time to truly be a father."

In his autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom," Nelson Mandela wrote wistfully of his inability to fulfill his role as a husband to Winnie Mandela during his incarceration, which ended in 1990. The couple divorced in 1996. He is now married to Graca Machel, the former first lady of Mozambique.

"When your life is the struggle, as mine was, there is little room left for family. That has always been my greatest regret, and the most painful aspect of the choice I made," Mandela wrote.

Makaziwe Mandela said she relates to actress Jane Fonda, who wrote in a memoir about her troubled relationship with her father, actor Henry Fonda. "On Golden Pond," the 1981 movie that starred both Fondas, also offered a bittersweet lesson in how a child can reach out to an elderly parent, even one who didn't, or couldn't, do enough.

"It is me who has to make an effort, to bridge the gap," Makaziwe said. "To be there."

Nasdaq to pay $10 million to settle SEC charges on Facebook snafu

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nasdaq OMX on Wednesday agreed to pay $10 million, the largest penalty ever levied against a stock exchange, to settle civil charges stemming from mistakes it made during Facebook's initial public offering last year, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said.

The SEC said that Nasdaq's series of "ill-fated decisions" on the day of the IPO led to a series of regulatory violations.

As a result, more than 30,000 Facebook orders remained stuck in Nasdaq's system for more than two hours when they should have been either executed or canceled, leaving investors in the lurch and causing market makers to lose an estimated $500 million.

The exchange operator agreed to settle the charges without admitting or denying the allegations.

Traveling Is Easy: Would you ski in North Korea?

(CNN) -- We're guessing this is going to end up on a lot of "world's most dangerous ski runs" lists. But probably for a different reason than any of the other entries.

North Korea is building a "world class" ski resort on Masik hill in Wonsan with a range of ski runs and a hotel, according to the North Korean state news agency.

Located in Kangwon Province, Masik hill is 2,52feet (768 meters) high and typically receives heavy snowfall from early November through early March.

Construction underway

A series of photos of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un speaking with his staff in front of the ski resort site was released this week.

The accompanying news report from the state-run Korean Central News Agency said the young leader dropped by to get a firsthand report on the progress of construction.

"He was greatly satisfied to learn that soldier-builders have constructed a skiing area on mountain ranges covering hundreds of thousands of square meters, including primary, intermediate and advanced courses with almost 110,000 meters (68.3 miles) in total length and 40-120 meters (131-394 feet) in width," said the KCNA report.

7 best ski and snowboard resorts in South Korea

The new resort will be accessible from the Pyongyang-Wonsan tourist motorway and will feature a hotel, heliport and "cableway."

Kim, who was partly educated in Switzerland, appears to be familiar with ski resort operations.

"He said it is necessary to build not only rest places, but first aid stations at starting, middle and final points of the courses, and establish an automatic cableway monitoring system for a real time watch so as to take measures to prevent accidents," said the report.

According to the report, Kim also emphasized environmental conservation: "He underlined the need to preserve the ecological environment and prevent pollution while building the skiing ground."

Behind the veil: A rare look at life in North Korea

Would you go?

According to a tour agency specializing in North Korean travel, the new resort will be open to foreign tourists.

"We've known of the plans for this development for a couple of years -- work only began recently though and I've seen the basic plans just last week," said Simon Cockerell, general manager of Beijing-based Koryo Tours.

Cockerell returned last week from the first Western tour of the North Korean border town of Sinuiju.

No opening date has been given for the opening of the resort.

South Korean media covered the news of the resort in critical fashion.

"The fact that North Korea is spending exorbitant amounts of money building a ski resort while its people and even its military don't have enough to eat shows that this is just a move to advertise the image of Kim Jong Un as a leader who cares about his people," an anonymous North Korean defector told NK News, a South Korea-based media company specializing in North Korean news.

The defector also said that existing ski infrastructure in North Korea is used exclusively for military purposes, and that there's a high likelihood this will also be the case with the new resort.

Tips For A Trouble Free Vacation Every Time

Traveling involves a lot more than just sitting on an airplane. It is a really fun, exciting experience. There are many different ways to go about planning a vacation and a lot of different places to go. Are you ready to start your adventure? Regardless of your answer, here are some tips to help you.

List what you intend to take with you on a trip. You should begin creating the list of things to pack a few days or weeks in advance. Even if you end up packing at the last minute, this will help you remain organized and avoid unnecessary clutter.

Airplane travels requires that you plan ahead to prevent problems. It can take much more time then expected to get to airports in major cities because of traffic. You should have all of your luggage packed up and ready to go on the evening before you leave for your trip. Be prepared long before you have to be at the airport. You want to do everything possible to avoid arriving late for your flight.

Anytime you are traveling, be aware of all your belongings the entire time. When carrying a handbag, hold it securely against your body using your arm. Do not rely on shoulder straps alone. Avoid the use bags with zippers that will provide easy access to nearby theives that could easily take your valuables. Keep these things in mind when you're looking for a useful travel bag.

Get educated about foreign food ingredients to prevent unintentional exposure to allergens. If your food allergy is particularly bad, make sure to express this in their language. You'll be able to tell waitstaff in restaurants about your allergies before there's a problem and you have to explain to medical professionals.

Deserts have great views and interesting plants and animals. Everyone should experience the majesty and austerity of the desert at some point in their life.

Make sure your passport hasn't expired. Different areas of the world have different rules regarding passports. Even if it is still valid, if it expires soon, you may have problems. As long as the passport is not set to expire within the next six months, you should be fine for most countries; however, certain countries require eight months, or even up to one year.

When you are planning a vacation, doing it online is very efficient. You will find that your itinerary will be much easier to plan with the aid of a travel site. Make the most of your travel budget by booking air travel, rental cars and hotels online. Reviews and pictures of hotels are easily at your disposal. These websites also include special deals when your flight and hotel are booked together in a single package. They also offer discounts when vacancy is high or when you are traveling at the last minute.

Pack a couple of travel candles for your hotel stay. Candles can make a room smell better. They can be relaxing, comforting and even romantic. You can buy these candles in miniature sizes, and they are usually drip free.

It is not uncommon to provide the housekeeper and bell hop with a tip. For these services, a good tip for housekeeping would be from $2-$5 per day, and $1 per bag of luggage. That ensures that the people in charge of your service are happy and helpful.

As you saw, there are a variety of ways to make your trip less stressful and more fun. Start comparing destinations and making a list to pack for your next vacation.

PRECIOUS-Gold firm as stocks slip, dollar weakens versus yen

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Gold prices held firm on Monday after their best week in a month, as the dollar and global stock markets slipped on worries the United States was close to reining in measures to stimulate its economy.

U.S. and European shares fell last week for the first time in five weeks, on fears the Federal Reserve would trim its monetary easing programme, boosting the safe-haven appeal of bullion.

Gold marked its biggest weekly percentage gain in a month last week, but is down nearly 17 percent this year, following 12 years of annual gains.

"The price hike of last week suggests that we have formed a base below $1,350," said Tim Riddell, head of ANZ Global Markets Research, Asia.

"As long as gold remains at about $1,370, the chances of a rebound back towards the $1,450 level seem to be in place."

Spot gold was up 0.4 percent at $1,391.01 an ounce by 0240 GMT, not far off its two-year low of $1,321.35 in mid-April. It is headed for its seventh monthly drop in the last eight months.

U.S. gold rose 0.25 percent to $1,390.00.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke raised the possibility of gradually reducing the Fed's bond purchases if the labor market improved in a sustainable way, and warned of risks to holding interest rates too low for too long.

But he also said he needed to see more strength in the economy before making a decision on halting stimulus.

Comments by St. Louis Fed President James Bullard that U.S. inflation would have to pick up before he voted to scale back stimulus have supported gold.

Commodity markets were subdued, with British and U.S. financial markets closed on Monday for public holidays. There is also little in the way of major economic news due out of Asia.

Japan's Nikkei share average fell 3 percent on Monday, and could endure another volatile session as investors remained on edge after last week's turbulent trade that drove the market to its worst one-day loss in two years.

The dollar slipped against the yen after posting on Friday its worst week against the yen in a year.

SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings fell 0.24 percent to 1016.16 tonnes on Friday to the lowest in more than four years.

Brazil says will cancel Africa debt worth $900 mln

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Brazil will cancel or restructure almost $900 million in debt owed by African countries, a Brazilian official said on Saturday, as part of a plan to increase future funding to the continent.

Latin America's economic powerhouse is increasingly expanding its economic ties with Africa, a sign of how crises in the rich world are pushing faster-growing emerging economies to trade and invest among themselves, economists say.

Brazilian officials said President Dilma Rousseff, visiting Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to mark the African Union's 50th anniversary, was set to announce a new development agency alongside the cancellation that will offer assistance to African countries.

"Almost all (aid) is cancellation," Thomas Traumann, spokesman of Brazil's presidency, told reporters in Addis Ababa.

Under Brazilian law, Brasilia cannot offer new loans and long-term financial assistance to countries with outstanding debts.

Traumann said most of Brazil's future assistance would target infrastructure, agricultural and social programmes.

Among the 12 countries set to benefit are new gas exploration hotspot Tanzania, which owes Brazil $237 million, along with oil-producing Republic of Congo and copper-rich Zambia.

Most of the debt was accumulated in the 1970s and had been renegotiated previously, Traumann added.

"Brazil has great expertise in what we call tropicalising European crops. We have that technology," he said. "The idea is how to transfer that technology from Brazil to other African countries."

In a sign of Brazil's quest for deeper ties with Africa, Rousseff was making her third visit to the continent in as many months, Traumann added.

The BRICs countries - comprising Brazil, China, India and Russia - are now Africa's largest trading partners and its biggest new group of investors. BRICS-Africa trade is seen eclipsing $500 billion by 2015, according to Standard Bank.

Psychology Degree Career Options - SubmitYourArticle.com

If you think you're destined for clinical practice or research work with your degree in psychology, think again. The truth is that a degree in psychology yields a plethora of career options, a few of which are listed below.

Psychometrist

Under the supervision of a licensed clinical psychologist or neuropsychologist, a psychometrist administers and scores psychological tests to determine a patient's level of performance in various areas such as intelligence, memory, motor skills, and personality. Most psychometrists get their start in larger medical facilities, while others start off in private practices, training centers, or when transitioning from research facilities that are involved in studies on cognition.

Psychometrists must have, at minimum, a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, but educational requirements vary by state. Check with your state's psychology board in order to access the most current information.

College/University Professor

Jobs for post-secondary teachers are expected to increase by 17 percent between now and 2020. And while most professors who work for 4-year colleges and universities hold a doctoral degree, some schools hire those with only a master's degree. However, most master's degree holders are hired by two-year colleges or career and technical schools. The median annual income for post-secondary teachers in 2010 was a little more than $62,000, with the top 10 percent earning more than $130,500.

Polygraph Examiner

Polygraph examiners are adept in the use of the polygraph test, which simultaneously measures physiological responses from at least three systems in the body. In addition to conducting and overseeing the test, polygraph examiners create polygraph test questions, analyze the results, and write a report concerning the findings. They often work in confrontational environments and can be found working in law enforcement agencies, the legal community, government agencies, and the private sector. Depending on the scope of the job, they must hold a bachelor's degree and either a state license or federal certification. Polygraph examiners earn an average of $38,000 per year, though some (such as CIA polygraph examiners) may earn between $50,000 and over $100,000 per year.

Animal Behaviorist

Animal behaviorists study animal behavior. Their work can involve researching psychology, communication, learning methods, instincts, and group interaction among animals. Within the realm of applied animal behavior, animal behaviorists may work with many different kinds of animals from wild animals to companion animals, to livestock and lab animals. Animal behaviorists typically have undergraduate degrees in psychology, biology, zoology, or animal science.

Universities.com connects people to information they need to make informed decisions about which colleges and universities are the best fit for their educational goals.

Why did our ancestors start walking upright? Ancient terrain may hold clue.

A study suggests that rocky landscapes in East and South Africa could have pushed our apelike ancestors toward bipedalism. ? ?

Being four-legged has its perks. As a?quadruped, your center of gravity is lower, there's less wind resistance when you're running, and, best of all, you can use your hind foot to scratch your ear.

All of this raises a big question: What were our apelike ancestors thinking when they started walking upright??

A prevailing hypothesis is that they were prompted by climate change. As African forests declined due to?temperature?fluctuations some 2.5 million years ago, the hypothesis?goes, our australopithecine ancestors descended from the trees and ventured out into the open savanna, an environment thought to be friendlier for those standing on two feet.?

The savanna hypothesis has its critics, however. There is some evidence that bipedal primates evolved before the biggest temperature swings kicked in, that some australopithecines ancestors lived in forests, and that they were adapted to both tree-climbing and upright walking. ?

Now a new study suggests that walking on two legs was a result of geology, not climate. In a study published in this month's issue of the archaeological journal Antiquity, a team of archaeologists makes the case that our forebears' transition to bipedalism was?prompted by volcanoes and shifting tectonic plates in East and South Africa, which produced rocky outcroppings and steep gorges.

?The broken, disrupted terrain offered benefits for hominins in terms of security and food, but it also proved a motivation to improve their locomotor skills by climbing, balancing, scrambling and moving swiftly over broken ground - types of movement encouraging a more upright gait,? said University of York archaeologist and study co-author?Isabelle Winder, in a press release.

This development would have conferred benefits that extend far beyond locomotion. Walking on two legs frees up the hands, allowing for the use of tools and, eventually, bigger brains. And the complex landscape could have made our ancestors smarter, says Dr. Winder.

?The varied terrain may also have contributed to improved cognitive skills such as navigation and communication abilities, accounting for the continued evolution of our brains and social functions such as co-operation and team work."

Microsoft and Google make amends, will co-develop a YouTube app for Windows Phone

We've gotta give it to Microsoft... building a YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 that strips out advertising and allows users to download streaming videos was one hell of a way to get Google's attention about the lack of an official app for the platform -- even if it managed to attract ire at the same time. Now, multiple reports are coming in that both companies have reached an agreement of sorts, which will result in an app that's fully compliant with YouTube's Terms of Service in the coming weeks. You might've already guessed it, but unlike Microsoft's most recent conciliatory update to its YouTube app, the next version will serve up ads. You'll find a joint statement from both companies after the break. Now that the pair are learning to cooperate, might we suggest they take a look at Gmail?

Where, oh, where is my regional Apple TV content?

I love my Apple TV, but what I'd love even more is a healthy dose of regional content on it. AirPlay is OK, but I see it more a means to an end in certain circumstances, not an integral part of my experience. When I'm relaxing watching TV, I don't want to have to reach for my iPhone or iPad, or even my Mac in order to put something on there to watch.

The major free-to-air channels in the UK -- BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 -- all have on-demand video services. Each of them also has an iOS application to watch their TV content on your iPhone and iPad. On the Mac, you only need the web browser. On the Apple TV, I'd love each of these to have their own channel.

AirPlay isn't quite the same

AirPlay is great, I use it all the time. Be it sending music or video from my iOS devices or mirroring the display on my Mac to the TV. Mirroring a Mac display doesn't help in this situation though, because I can't use it for anything else. OS X doesn't provide the same media-only AirPlay options that iOS does. (Fingers crossed for OS X 10.9...)

The other issue is that the apps have to be specifically AirPlay enabled. For example, this method works great on the BBC iPlayer app, but doesn't work at all on the ITV Player app, because it doesn't have AirPlay enabled. Whether it's DRM issues or contractual obligations that keep apps AirPlay free, or force strange AirPlay implementations, it makes no difference to the end user. We just think it's broken.

In the absence of proper channels, AirPlay is all there is, for those that support it. I find myself using apps like the iPlayer more than ITV Player simply because I can watch them on the TV if I want to.

Never mind when you try to mirror from an iPhone and the Phone app actually rings, killing the TV...

The TV is for relaxing

I like to relax when I'm watching TV, so when I'm using my Apple TV I just kick back, find something to watch and off I go. There's just not quite enough content to make me want to use the Apple TV more. The hardware is fine, the software is fine -- to me, at least -- I just want more content. I want to use my Apple TV more. I want to have one under every TV I have, and not have to think about whether I'll need my iPhone or iPad to help decide what I want to watch.

So, coming out of WWDC I would really love to see some Apple TV news. I'd love to see Apple announce that they've struck a whole bunch of regional content deals all over the world. Or the ability for developers to make apps for the platform so the likes of the BBC could do it themselves. And I'm sure I'm not alone in wishing for a better spread of regional content.

So, what would you love to see Apple do with the Apple TV at WWDC? What kind of content are you longing for in your part of the world?
