More than 200 HomeGoods stores nationwide will be participating in the 12th annual HomeGoods ?Helps Families Fight Cancer? campaign benefiting the Jimmy Fund, which supports pediatric and adult cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass.

HomeGoods customers can participate by making a $1, $5, or $10 contribution at the register to ?Help Families Fight Cancer? with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Dana-Farber. New to this year?s program, customers also have the opportunity to purchase a reusable shopping bag featuring artwork by a Jimmy Fund Clinic pediatric patient for 99 cents.? New faces covering more of the bases in NCAA tournament

Kent State, St. John's and Stony Brook are heading to the NCAA super regionals, and casual fans who follow college baseball only in June must be asking, "Who are these guys?"

Schools that have invested in their programs are making the road to the College World Series a lot bumpier for the traditional powers.

The unpredictability is great for fans but not so much for the elite programs that used to write trips to Omaha on their schedules in pen rather than pencil.

"Athletic departments and athletic directors are recognizing that baseball is the least expensive opportunity to win a national championship that is televised nationally," said Texas' Augie Garrido, the all-time winningest coach in Division I. "In football, these smaller schools aren't going to have a chance to dance with the giants. In baseball, the parity is extreme."

Texas has played in a nation-leading 55 NCAA tournaments since 1947 but didn't make it this year for the first time in 14 years.

Two-time defending national champion South Carolina, 2011 national runner-up Florida and Stanford are among the usual suspects still alive. But familiar names such as North Carolina, Virginia and Miami (Fla.) are not after being among the six No. 1 regional seeds to go down last weekend.

Mid-American Conference champion Kent State (44-17) will be in a super regional for the first time Saturday when it begins a best-of-three series at No. 5 national seed Oregon.

Same with Big East champion St. John's (40-21), which goes to Arizona, and America East champ Stony Brook (50-12), which visits LSU. Those series start Friday.

Kent State has made the NCAA tournament four consecutive years and eight times since 2001. This year's breakthrough comes for a program with an annual budget of $740,000 ? a bargain by college athletics standards.

Athletics director Joel Nielsen can only imagine the bang for the buck he'd get if the Golden Flashes, who are on a nation-leading 20-game winning streak, make it to Omaha.

"I think there is a lot to be said for making the College World Series and the exposure it brings at a time when it's the only thing going on in college athletics," Nielsen said.

Schools beyond the traditional powers have benefited from the 2-year-old NCAA rule allowing only 27 of the 35 players on a roster to get a cut of a team's 11.7 total scholarships. Each of those 27 players must receive at least a 25% slice.

"There are a lot of very good players who are spread around now," Kent State coach Scott Stricklin said. "The scholarship limitations have taken away from the big schools that were just giving kids books. Those kids would go because they wanted to play at a big-name school. So now players who might be sitting on the bench in the SEC, Big 12 or ACC are playing at the so-called mid-majors and playing right away."

Another factor is the toned-down aluminum bats. They've neutralized teams that once dominated with bigger and stronger athletes.

"You're seeing more one- or two-run ball games, and that means you have to change the way you play," St. John's coach Ed Blankmeyer said. "It becomes pitching, defense and timely hitting. You get guys who can pitch and catch the ball, you can make some noise."

Kent State and St. John's made it through regionals as No. 3 seeds with 3-0 records.

The Golden Flashes beat Southeastern Conference power Kentucky twice in one-run games in Gary, Ind., the first of those wins requiring 21 innings. The Red Storm beat top-seeded North Carolina twice in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Stony Brook, on the other hand, had to stave off elimination three times and beat second-seeded Central Florida twice to advance. The Seawolves are the third No. 4 regional seed to advance since the super-regional format began in 1999. The last No. 4 to make it out of regionals, Fresno State in 2008, won a national championship.

Matt Senk, who has coached at Stony Brook for 22 years and led the Long Island school's transition to Division I in 2000, said his players were "euphoric" after the regional but won't be intimidated by playing at LSU's raucous 10,000-seat Alex Box Stadium.

"The happy-to-be-here mentality might have existed back in 2004 when we went to the tournament for the first time," Senk said. "Certainly in 2008, that changed a little bit, and in 2010 we picked up our first win in a regional. We just felt like this was what we were building for and that it was time to make it happen."

Stony Brook has won 26 of its last 28 and is the first team in the nation to reach 50 victories.

If the Seawolves win two more, they're heading to Omaha.

"I would absolutely love for that to happen," Senk said, "but, boy, we've got a huge obstacle in our way. But these things don't happen if you don't allow yourself to dream it."

Researchers identify changes in cholesterol metabolic pathways

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? A new study from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine has identified molecular changes responsible for abnormal cholesterol production and metabolism in the livers of patients with a common liver condition, and these changes may explain the severity of a patient's liver disease and risks to their heart health.

It is estimated that a third of Americans have a fatty liver. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a very common liver condition. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH, the more aggressive form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is associated with increased cardiac risk and liver-related mortality.

The VCU findings may provide researchers with potential new targets for treatment and also allow clinicians to further refine how they assess cardiovascular risk and develop ways to reduce it in individuals with a more aggressive form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH.

In the study, published in the May issue of Cell Metabolism, the team has shown that there is not only increased production of cholesterol but a decreased expression of the receptor that takes up cholesterol from the blood. This would be expected to both enhance cholesterol output from the liver and reduce its removal, thereby making it more available to enter blood vessels and contribute to cardiovascular disease. The liver not only makes cholesterol, but also takes up cholesterol from the blood.

"This indicates that there is excessive cholesterol production in the liver when one develops fatty liver disease," said lead investigator Arun Sanyal, M.D., professor and chair in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in the VCU School of Medicine.

"This may be important both to drive the disease towards cirrhosis and to increase the risks of heart disease in those with fatty liver disease," said Sanyal.

Sanyal collaborated with VCU colleagues in the VCU Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the Department of Surgery and the Department of Pathology.

Australian minister defends comm security in China

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australia's defense minister said Wednesday he was protecting the confidentiality of government communications after a newspaper reported he left his delegation's laptop computers and cellphones behind before flying to mainland China.

Defense Minister Stephen Smith took precautions against Chinese espionage by leaving computers and phones in Hong Kong before flying to Beijing for a goodwill visit, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. His staff were given fresh phones in China with new numbers.

The minister took the step after such devices were "compromised" on previous ministerial visits, the newspaper said.

Leaving computers and telecommunications devices outside China is becoming standard operating procedure for the United States and many other Western governments, as well as corporate executives.

But the timing of the news reports could be awkward. Smith is in China to soothe concerns over Australia's decision to deepen its military ties with the United States by hosting up to 2,500 U.S. Marines at a joint training hub. China is Australia's biggest trading partner.

Australia also recently banned Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei from working on a national broadband network for security reasons.

Beijing's relations with Western governments have been strained by complaints about hacking traced to China and aimed at oil, technology and other types of companies.

Smith declined to say whether he had been hacked on any previous visit to China. But he said he had taken such security measures before.

"Ministers are entitled to ensure the confidentiality of their communications, so this is nothing unusual, nothing extraordinary," Smith told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television from Beijing.

"Governments do it, private corporations do it for industrial reasons, so this is just part of the modern world," he added.

He did not directly answer when asked if he took the same security measures when visiting the United States, Australia's major defense partner.

In the wake of Minaj's feud with Hot 97, MTV News examines what real hip-hop is and who gets to decide.

A funny thing happened on the way to Summer Jam. All hip-hop hell broke loose after an off-the-cuff comment by a radio DJ led rap's reigning queen to pull out of the year's biggest rap concert. Nicki Minaj versus Hot 97 has no doubt become the biggest rap gossip of the week, but once the drama subsides, an eternal discussion will still linger: What is real hip-hop? And who gets to decide?

In one corner there's rap purist and Hot 97 radio personality Peter Rosenberg, who trashed Nicki's RedOne-produced crossover machine "Starships" in front of concertgoers just hours before she was scheduled to take the stage. In the other corner there is Nicki Minaj, whose pop success has made her a punching bag for critics who turn their noses up at anything without a James Brown sample.

Hot 97's famous tagline is "where hip-hop lives," and in the radio world that pretty much rings true, though underground artists like Action Bronson, Skyzoo and the Immortal Technique could make a case otherwise. Minaj is technically rapping (and singing) on the fist-pumping "Starships," and while the Barbie has always been classified as a hip-hop artist, the song didn't become a top five Billboard single with urban-radio spins alone. Still, Hot 97 does play the record.

If it is judged solely against the boom-bap DJ Premier portion of the genre, then "Starships" isn't really a hip-hop record, but the track's pounding bass and electro-pop dance beat is not totally detached from rap's early days. Afrika Bambaataa's iconic "Planet Rock," lifted from Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express," was centered around dance and not dusty samples or deep and intricate lyrics. In the 1980s, the Jungle Brothers built much of their discography around house and dance music, and they were one of the most celebrated hip-hop groups of their day.

Hell, you can even trace Nicki's penchant for wearing over-the-top costumes back to Bambaataa, so to suggest that "Starships" isn't real hip-hop is an absolute statement and isn't entirely accurate. Now to call "Starships" "wack" is a qualitative judgment and one widely held by hard-core rap fans — so there is some basis to Rosenberg's charge.

On her latest, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nick essentially splits her sound down the middle. On one side, Euro-inspired dance anthems dominate, while on the other side there are hard-core rap joints. For every "Starships" there is a "Beez in the Trap" or "Roman Reloaded," which builds its beat around nine-millimeter gunshot sound effects. Nicki recognizes that she toes hip-hop's undefined line, but relentlessly holds on to her rap roots. "I'm still me, hip-hop culture is still in my heart," Minaj told MTV News back in April. "That can never leave me. I know I'm always gonna be street, because I can't pretend to be street."

When she phoned in to Power 105's Breakfast Club morning show on Tuesday, Nicki insisted that she wasn't planning to perform "Starships" at Summer Jam. Instead, she planned to rock more fitting tracks and parade out a who's who of hip-hop favorites during her set. Nas, Lauryn Hill, Lil Wayne, Cam'ron, 2 Chainz and Foxy Brown were just some of the guests with whom Minaj planned to share her stage. Ironically, it could have ended up the realest hip-hop moment of the year.

Publisher HarperCollins promised that Cissy Houston would write with "candor honesty and respect," in chronicling her daughter's career heights, as well as Whitney's legendary drug problems, tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown and her own grief.

"She will tell the unabridged and unbelievable story of her daughter's life as well as her own, addressing Whitney's brightest and darkest moments while helping fans around the world understand the complexities of this extraordinary star who died much too soon," the publisher said.

Swapping 140-character messages is big business. After a long road to monetization, Twitter may now be on track to rake in $1 billion in 2014, far earlier than analysts have predicted.

Despite earlier forecasts that Twitter would generate over $1 billion in revenue by 2016, a new report by Bloomberg reveals that according to its source, Twitter is expected to rake in over $1 billion much earlier ? 2014. If the rumors are true, Twitter has been a hit among advertisers and its days of hunting for revenue are over.

Until Twitter acknowledges the forecast, the forecast remains only a rumor, but it?s a plausible figure. In 2011, Twitter generated $139.5 million in revenue, much of it due to adverting. That?s a far cry from $1 billion in a matter of three years, but the company has been particularly aggressive in 2012 with the promotion of its advertising business.

Following in Facebook?s footsteps, Twitter recently introduced a beta release of its self-serve advertising program for small businesses, and followed up this move with two strategic hires to head up its expansion into international advertising. The new hires are ex-Google employees, Shailesh Rao, who serves as Twitter?s vice president of international revenue, and Stephen McIntyre, its director of international and online sales and operations.

Twitter?s international efforts could significantly contribute to it advertising revenue in the near future, but its small business advertising program is in its infant stages and was released to only a select number of merchants. The small business program has had little to do with its performance to date.

Instead, much of its advertising revenue should be attributed to its crucial corporate partnerships with companies including ESPN, American Express, and more recently, its music-inspired brand partnership with Pepsi. You may have noticed the promoted Pepsi hash tags and Pepsi?s integration of Twitter?s real-time data to create original Web programming on the latest Twitter trending artists.

Now six years old, Twitter?s 2012 revenue is likely to pale in comparison to Facebook?s multi-billion dollar display ad revenue and Google?s $10 billion ad revenue in 2011 alone. To put Twitter?s competitor?s performance into perspective, according to Bloomberg, Facebook took six years to generate its first $1 billion in yearly revenue, while Google made its first $1 billion in five years.

But credit should be given where it?s deserved. At its #Twitter4Brands event in New York City, a presentation to promote Twitter?s suite of advertising offerings, Twitter revealed the following impressive statistics:

? Twitter has more than 140 million active users.

? 55 percent of users access Twitter on mobile, with 40 percent growth quarter over quarter.

? Twitter users create over one billion Tweets every three days.

? 60 percent of Twitter users tweet; 100 percent are listening.

? 79 percent of people follow brands to get access to exclusive content.

? During this year?s Super Bowl, one in five commercials contained a hashtag.

? Promoted Tweets get an average engagement rate of one to three percent.

The micro-blogging platform is a far cry from its older self, when the company was offering enterprise suites and analytics, before realizing that the bigger bang for the buck was in advertising. Twitter has found its groove, and while its advertising programs are in its early stages, it?s beginning to establish itself as a crucial platform for businesses.

Timeline to reach desired equity position depends on 3 factors

About 16 million homeowners owe more on their mortgage than their homes are worth, which means they are "underwater." So long as that condition continues, they have no equity that can be used to help finance the purchase of another house.

On the contrary, they can't sell the house without digging into their pockets to pay the difference between what they owe and what they can realize from the sale net of expenses.

But time heals most wounds, and negative equity is no exception. The principal component of the monthly mortgage payment reduces the loan balance by the same amount.

Refinancing into a mortgage carrying a lower interest rate reduces the interest portion of the monthly mortgage payment, thereby increasing the principal component and the rate at which the balance is paid down.

Although underwater borrowers generally can't qualify for a refinance, those fortunate enough to have their mortgages held by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac comprise an important exception. The government's Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) permits negative equity, though borrowers must be in good standing to be eligible.

The other component of negative equity, depressed home prices, also appears to have turned the corner. Prices have begun to rise again in some areas in which the houses listed on the market have fallen short of demand from purchasers. It is plausible that within the year home prices in most areas will again be on the rise.

It is now time for underwater borrowers to start planning to get their heads above water. To help in that process, Chuck Freedenberg and I have designed two calculators designated 2d and 2e on my website. The first shows the borrower's equity in the property month by month for any combination of the various factors that affect changes in equity. These include the interest rate, property appreciation rate, and extra payments. Some examples are shown in the table.

The table shows, for different combinations of interest rate, appreciation rate and extra payments, when the borrower will no longer be underwater, which is the month when equity hits zero. The table also shows how long it will take before equity hits 10 percent, at which point the borrower who is otherwise qualified will be able to refinance, and 20 percent where a refinance won't require mortgage insurance. Borrowers may want to raise their targets to cover the expenses of whatever action they plan. If the goal is to sell the house, for example, they will need positive equity of 5-7 percent to cover sales costs. This is easy to find with the calculator. The second calculator is designed for underwater borrowers who want to know how much extra they have to pay each month to reach a target equity level within a specified period. For example, the borrower paying 4.5 percent in the example above wants 10 percent equity in five years and believes his house will appreciate at a rate of 1 percent a year. The calculator tells him he must pay an additional $315.50 every month for 60 months to reach his objective. If his house does not appreciate, he has to pay $418.05. While the calculator tells you what you must do to reach your objective, it doesn't tell you how to develop the commitment and determination to see it through. I am working on that.
