Hollywood Hillbillies: The rise of redneck TV

Hollywood Hillbillies: A new reality TV show features a Georgia 'hillbilly' family that moves to Hollywood.

By Associated Press / July 30, 2013

Michael Kittrell responds to a South Park episode that claimed 'red heads' or 'Gingers' don't have souls. His sometimes profane YouTube video has now spawned a reality TV show: 'Hollywood Hillbillies.'

Another family from rural Georgia is coming to reality television, with "Hollywood Hillbillies" set to debut in January on cable TV's ReelzChannel.

The show follows Michael Kittrell and his grandmother Delores Hughes, known as "Mema," as the family moves from Grayson, Georgia, to Hollywood. Along for the ride are Kittrell's aunt, Dee Dee Peters, her boyfriend Paul Conlon, and Kittrell's uncle John Cox.

Kittrell is known as "The Angry Ginger" on YouTube, where a video he made to protest a "South Park" episode that claimed redheads have no soul gained attention.

"I made a lot of money on my YouTube channel, and I saved it all from the past four years," Kittrell said. "I got my family with me to support me and help me while we all look for our place out here."

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson, her mother and their rural Georgia family are the subjects of a hit TLC cable TV show that focuses on their lives in a small town.

As The Christian Science Monitor reported, redneck TV is on the rise.

As the popular ?Duck Dynasty? (A&E) wrapped up its third season it boasted an average of 8.5 million viewers an episode. A quick review of program lineups reveals the appetite for self-described reality ?redneck? shows is only growing: ?Buckwild? (MTV), ?American Hoggers? (A&E), ?Moonshiners? (Discovery), and ?Hillbilly Handfishin? ? and ?Call of the Wildman? (Animal Planet) are just a sampling of programs reveling in the adventures to be had in rural, southern America.
Why are these shows captivating TV audiences? It could have something to do with the Southern tradition of good storytelling, or the invitation to gawk at a culture vastly different from one?s own.

Eric Deggans, television and media critic for the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, says there are two types of audiences drawn to these kinds of shows: one group that ?feels like they?re from that world, and another that likes to mock them.?

Tech stocks lifted by Facebook

Tech stocks pushed the Nasdaq higher for the second day in a row Thursday, as the broader market wavered.

The Nasdaq ended the day up 0.7%, lifted by Facebook's strong earnings report. A day earlier, Apple's better-than expected earnings also fueled the tech-heavy index.

But investors largely lacked conviction to push the broader market decidedly in any one direction Thursday. In the summer, volumes tend to be light and all three indexes have gained more than 18% so far this year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 hovered around breakeven with a mixed bag of earnings reports and a pair of tepid economic reports keeping investors sidelined. Both indexes did manage to eke out modest gains at the close.

More than a third of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported second-quarter results so far, according to S&P Capital IQ. As of Thursday morning, 66% had topped analysts' lowered expectations.

The Facebook effect: Shares of Facebook surged 30% Thursday, a day after the social networking site posted strong quarterly results, led by a marked improvement in its mobile business.

"Facebook is the one driving the Nasdaq and [30%] is a powerful, powerful move" said Joseph Saluzzi, a partner at Themis Trading.

The momentum also propelled Zynga during the trading day, with the stock ending up almost 7%. But shares of the app developer, which has games on Facebook, tumbled in after-hours trading after the company issued a weak outlook for the third quarter.

Mixed bag of earnings: Dow Chemical and Tripadvisor reported quarterly profit gains.

General Motors reported an improvement in second-quarter earnings, but a slowdown in China pressured overall profits.

80 dead in Spain train crash blamed on high speed

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? A Spanish train that hurtled off the rails and smashed into a security wall as it rounded a bend was going so fast that carriages tumbled off the tracks like dominos, killing 80 people and maiming dozens more, according to eyewitness accounts and video footage obtained Thursday.

An Associated Press analysis of video images suggests the train may have been traveling at twice the speed limit, or more, along that curved stretch of track. The unanswered question is: Why?

Spain's government said two probes have been launched into the train's derailment Wednesday night on its approach to this Christian festival city in northwest Spain, where planned celebrations in honor of one of Jesus' disciples gave way to a living nightmare.

The regional government in Galicia confirmed that police planned to question the 52-year-old train driver, in Santiago de Compostela's main hospital with unspecified injuries, as both a witness and as a possible suspect, but cautioned that possible faults in safety equipment were also being investigated.

The Interior Ministry raised the death toll to 80 in what was Spain's deadliest train wreck in four decades. The Galician government said 94 others remained hospitalized in six regional hospitals, 31 of them ? including four children ? in critical condition.

The U.S. State Department said one American was killed in the crash and five others were injured. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said those numbers were "likely to change" and declined to elaborate.

"Today the American people grieve with our Spanish friends, who are in our thoughts and prayers," President Barack Obama said in a statement.

In the morning, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a native of Santiago de Compostela, toured the crash scene alongside rescue workers and went to a nearby hospital to visit those wounded and their families. In the evening Spain's head of state, King Carlos, and Queen Sofia went to the same hospital, dressed in funereal black.

"For a native of Santiago, like me, this is the saddest day," said Rajoy, who declared Spain would observe a three-day period of mourning. He said judicial authorities and the Public Works Ministry had launched parallel investigations into what caused the crash.

Eyewitness accounts backed by security-camera footage of the moment of disaster suggested that the eight-carriage train was going too fast as it tried to turn left underneath a road bridge. The train company Renfe said 218 passengers and five crew members were on board. Spanish officials said the speed limit on that section of track is 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour.

An Associated Press estimate of the train's speed at the moment of impact using the time stamp of the video and the estimated distance between two pylons gives a range of 144-192 kph (89-119 mph). Another estimate calculated on the basis of the typical distance between railroad ties gives a range of 156-182 kph (96-112 mph).

The video footage, which the Spanish railway authority Adif said probably came from one of its cameras, shows the train carriages starting to buckle soon into the turn.

Murray Hughes, consultant editor of Railway Gazette International, said it appeared that a diesel-powered unit behind the lead locomotive was the first to derail. The front engine itself quickly followed, violently tipping on to its right side as it crashed into a concrete security wall and bulldozed along the ground.

In the background, all the rear carriages could be seen starting to decouple and come off the tracks. The picture went blank as the engine appeared to crash directly into the camera.

After impact, witnesses said a fire engulfed passengers trapped in at least one carriage, most likely driven by ruptured tanks of diesel fuel carried in the forward engines.

"I saw the train coming out of the bend at great speed and then there was a big noise," one eyewitness who lives beside the train line, Consuelo Domingues, told The Associated Press. "... Then everybody tried to get out of the train."

Santiago officials had been preparing for the city's internationally celebrated Catholic festival Thursday but canceled it and took control of the city's main indoor sports arena to use as a makeshift morgue. There, relatives of the dead could be seen sobbing and embracing each other.

The Interior Ministry, responsible for law and order, ruled out terrorism as a cause.

While sections of the Spanish press pointed an accusatory finger at the train driver, Spanish authorities and railway safety experts cautioned that a fault in systems designed to keep trains traveling at safe speeds could be to blame.

Spain's lead investigator in the crash, Judge Vazquez Ta?n, ordered detectives to question the train driver.

Renfe identified the driver, Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, as a 30-year employee of the state rail company who became an assistant driver in 2000 and a fully qualified driver in 2003. The company said Amo took control of the train from a second driver about 100 kilometers (65 miles) south of Santiago de Compostela.

Renfe's president, Julio Gomez-Pomar Rodriguez, president of Renfe, told Spain's Cadena Cope radio network that the driver had worked on that route for more than one year.

It was Spain's deadliest train accident since 1972, when a train collided with a bus in southwest Spain, killing 86 people and injuring 112.

"July 24 will no longer be the eve of a day of celebration but rather one commemorating one of the saddest days in the history of Galicia," said Alberto Nunez Feijoo, regional president of Galicia. Santiago de Compostela is its capital.

The accident created a scene that was "Dante-esque," Feijoo said. He said Galicia would observe seven days of mourning.

Rescue workers spent the night searching through smashed carriages alongside the tracks.

As dawn broke, cranes brought to the scene were used to lift the carriages away from the tracks. Rescue workers collected passengers' scattered luggage and loaded it into a truck next to the tracks.

Rescuers described a scene of horror immediately after the crash. Smoke billowed from at least one carriage that had caught fire, while another had been torn into two parts.

Residents of the residential neighborhood closest to the rail line struggled to help victims out of the toppled cars. Some passengers were pulled out of broken windows. Television images showed one man atop a carriage lying on its side, using a pickaxe to try to smash through a window. Other rescuers used rocks to try to free survivors from the fiery wreckage.

Nearby, rescue workers lined up bodies covered in blankets alongside the tracks.

State-owned train operator Renfe said the crash happened at 8:41 p.m. (1841 GMT) about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of Santiago de Compostela.

Spanish media said the train had two drivers aboard and both survived.

However, Galician court officials said the train had only one driver. Court spokeswoman Maria Pardo Rios said the driver survived and was expected to give a statement to police later Thursday. She declined to name the driver.

Renfe said it and Adif, another state-owned company that manages tracks, signals and other railway infrastructure, were cooperating with a judge appointed to investigate the accident.

It was the world's third major rail accident this month.

On July 12, six people were killed and nearly 200 were injured when four cars of a passenger train derailed south of Paris.

On July 6, 72 cars carrying crude oil derailed in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, setting off explosions and fires that killed 47 people.

Catholic pilgrims converge on Santiago de Compostela annually to celebrate a festival honoring St. James, a disciple of Jesus whose remains are said to rest in a shrine. The city is the main gathering point for those who reach the end of the El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route that has drawn Christians since the Middle Ages.

Several injured passengers said they felt a strong vibration just before the cars jumped the tracks, according to Xabier Martinez, a photographer who talked with them after arriving at the scene as rescue workers were still removing bodies.

One passenger, Ricardo Montero, told the Cadena Ser radio station that "when the train reached that bend it began to flip over, many times, with some carriages ending up on top of others, leaving many people trapped below. We had to get under the carriages to get out."

Another passenger, Sergio Prego, told Cadena Ser the train "traveled very fast" just before it derailed and the cars flipped upside down, on their sides and into the air.

"I've been very lucky because I'm one of the few able to walk out," Prego said.

The Alvia 730 series train started from Madrid and was scheduled to end its journey at El Ferrol, about 95 kilometers (60 miles) north of Santiago de Compostela. Alvias operate high-speed services but do not go as fast as Spain's fastest bullet trains, called AVEs.

The maximum Alvia speed is 250 kph (155 mph) on tracks made especially for the AVEs, and they travel at a maximum speed of 220 kph (137 mph) on normal gauge rails.

Other Spanish train calamities include a 1944 accident involving three trains that crashed in a tunnel. That disaster produced wildly disputed death tolls ranging from the government's official count of 78 to more than 500, according to later research.

In 2006, 43 people died when a subway train crashed because of excessive speed in the southern city of Valencia. In 2004, 191 died when al-Qaida-inspired terrorists detonated 10 bombs on four Madrid commuter trains.

Summer Baseball: Franklin Legion rips Needham

Mason allowed five runs, just three earned, and struck out four as Northborough built an 11-1 in the top of the fifth. John Maguire closed the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

Mike Stamas went 2-for-4, scored two runs and stole a base, and Jon Friday went 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI in a 12-hit offense for Post 234. Northborough scored four runs in the fourth to make it 6-1 and added five more in the fifth.

Senior Babe Ruth South game mercy ruled after five innings.

Andrew Salant hit an RBI single for Holliston, which took a 3-0 lead in the first.

Deal on student loans stumbles on costs

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An emerging deal to lower interest rates on student loans hit a major obstacle Thursday after lawmakers were told it carried a $22 billion price tag over the next decade.

The proposal was designed to offer Democrats the promise that interest rates would not reach 10 percent and to give Republicans a link between borrowing terms and the financial markets that they sought. But at that cost, the bipartisan coalition behind it decided to push pause and return to negotiations to bring that cost down.

The estimate was described by a congressional aide involved in the negotiations. The aide was not authorized to discuss the proposal by name and insisted on anonymity because the Congressional Budget Office report had not yet been widely released.

The unexpected cost estimate was unlikely to end talks among lawmakers about how they might reduce rates on subsidized Stafford loans, which doubled to 6.8 percent last week in the wake of congressional inaction.

Efforts to restore those rates to 3.4 percent were abandoned in favor of a new compromise that bears many similarities with a bill that House Republicans have passed, and with President Barack Obama's budget proposal.

"There is no question that there is a compromise available on this important issue and that the sides have not been that far apart and we just need to get it done," White House spokesman Jay Carney said before the Congressional Budget Office released its estimate.

"We have been working with lawmakers to make that compromise happen. We need to make sure that students don't see their rates double," he said.

Under the plan lawmakers were considering, interest rates on new loans would be based on the 10-year Treasury note, plus an additional percentage to pay for administrative costs. The proposal includes a limit on how high rates could climb, a provision that Democrats insisted be included in any legislation

That proved unexpectedly costly and, for the moment, proved problematic for negotiators.

Undergraduate students would have seen better terms than the current 6.8 percent rate but could have faced higher costs if the economy improves and Treasury notes become more expensive. Rates for students this fall would have been around 4 percent and would have been capped at 8.25 percent in future years.

Graduate students and parents could have found better deals next year but again would have faced higher rates than the current 7.9 percent. Borrowing for those PLUS loans would have been around 6 percent this fall and capped at 9.25 percent in coming years.

Serious work on a compromise came just hours after Democratic-led efforts to restore the 3.4 percent interest rates failed once more to overcome a procedural hurdle in the Senate. After several failures to find a stopgap measure, Democrats abandoned that tactic and instead looked for a way to lower rates for students before their return to campus this fall.

Obama's chief of staff, Denis McDonough, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan met with lawmakers Tuesday night to discuss possible options, including the market-based approach Obama included in his budget outline. Democrats insisted they try one last time to restore the 3.4 percent rate.

After that failed, lawmakers turned to a compromise approach and met Wednesday in the office of Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., to discuss the next steps. White House education and budget advisers joined those conversations and helped guide lawmakers to the proposal under consideration.

Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, joined negotiations on a potential deal he previously called unacceptable. He secured concessions on rate caps from the main authors of an earlier potential compromise, Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Angus King, I-Maine.

All said they were willing to tinker with some of the details to make it more acceptable to Harkin and his Democratic allies.

Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, the top Republican on the Senate committee, joined in and suggested he could bring with him Republican votes that would help overcome a 60-vote procedural hurdle in the chamber.

But at $22 billion over the next 10 years, it was likely to be far too much red ink to win Republican votes.

If fresh negotiations prove fruitless, millions of students returning to campus next month will find borrowing terms twice as high as when school let out. Without congressional action in the coming weeks, the increase could mean an extra $2,600 for an average student returning to campus this fall, according to Congress' Joint Economic Committee.

Read This If You Want To Know How To Improve Your Home | Home ...

Home improvement projects are a wonderful way to make the most out of your home. Be certain you are aware of what you have to do, and that you do it right. In this way, you can be happy with your work and get the most value for your home improvement dollar.

Take advantage of the carpet installation specials which major home improvement chains offer. They often offer cheap installation to encourage people to buy their carpets. This makes for a perfect opportunity to get new carpet into the house, because labor itself, rather than the carpet, is often the most expensive aspect of the process.

Wood or tile floors are worth the expense if your budget can afford them. While laminate is more cost effective and easy to clean, you can not refinish it. In a decade, perhaps two, you can hand the home down to a new owner and you want them to be appreciative of the work performed.

An over-the-range microwave is a great way to save space in an already cramped kitchen. Microwave ovens vary in cost and also in what they do. A lot of units use a filter and not a vent; these are meant for those who do not need a lot of ventilation.

Use sponges on drywall. Use the sponge instead of sandpaper. Once you?re used to it, you can smooth out drywall seams with a damp sponge just as well as you could sanding. With the sponge, though, you?ll avoid getting all that drywall dust all over your house.

While painting, remember to protect the floors. In this way, you can avoid damaging your carpeting and flooring. One inexpensive and effective way to protect flooring is using layers of old newspapers. There are also paint clothes made especially for this.

No matter the size of the home improvement project, it can become a nightmare or pleasant dream depending on how well it is executed. Hopefully, you have gotten a lot of advice that helps you on the way to successful home projects.

UFC and Bellator veteran Maiquel Falcao involved in ugly brawl that left one man hospitalized

Bellator and UFC veteran Maiquel Falcao was involved in a brawl in Brazil over the weekend that ended with one man in serious condition in the hospital. The brawl was caught on video by the gas station security video.

According to Yahoo! Brazil, the brawl started when Falcao grabbed a woman who was working at the gas station. She is wearing white shorts in the video. When she spoke up, he hit her. This touched off the brawl that left Brazilian fighter Kaue Mena hospitalized. Falcao and Mena were both hit with sticks. It's Mena who is on the ground in all black and is hit again and again.

Falcao had one fight in the UFC. He beat Gerald Harris at UFC 123, but was then cut from the promotion after legal troubles from a 2002 brawl. His most recent fight was a loss to Alexander Shlemeneko in February.

British TV presenter Michael Parkinson says he has cancer

LONDON | Sun Jul 7, 2013 11:35am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Veteran British chat show host Michael Parkinson revealed on Sunday that he had prostate cancer, but said he was living a normal life and hoped to make a full recovery.

Parkinson, 78, who interviewed Muhammad Ali, Marlon Brando, Fred Astaire and Orson Welles in a career spanning 50 years, said he was diagnosed with the disease in May, was undergoing radiotherapy and suffering no side effects or pain.

"I'm 78 and I have had a good life," said Parkinson, who announced his retirement from television in 2007. "I shall be around for a while yet, to the delight of my friends and the dismay of my enemies."

poca ciencia has estudiado t?, verdad?
