Kindle Fire, meet Kindle Fire HD

Kindle Fire, meet Kindle Fire HD

Kindle Fire, meet the new hotness. The holiday shopping crowd may have fallen in love with Amazon's tablet last year, but there's a new Fire in town. We snuck a Fire into today's Amazon event, and placed up next to the new model, the difference is clear: the Fire felt a bit OEMed and boxy, sort of a remake of the BlackBerry PlayBook, from a hardware perspective, at least. This is clearly not the case with the seven-inch HD -- it really feels like a reasonably high-end tablet with an extremely nice price point. And what about the Kindle Touch versus the Kindle Paperwhite? The difference aren't quite as extreme, but they're definitely apparent. The new devoted e-reader from Amazon is an extremely well built device at first glance. Check out a picture of the two after the break.

Concern about plans to close unique Canadian environmental project

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? The Canadian government's plans to discontinue in 2013 a unique environmental research project that has yielded insights into water pollution, climate change and other topics for almost 40 years would be a "huge loss not only to science but to the scientific heritage of humanity."

That's the focus of a viewpoint article in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology.

J. G. Hering, D. L. Swackhamer and W. H. Schlesinger explain that the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) comprises 58 freshwater lakes and their watersheds in remote areas of the province of Ontario, where researchers can study how human influences impact complex, real-world waterways. The governments of Canada and Ontario put these waters under protection in 1968. Since then, scientists from around the world have conducted numerous long-term and ecosystem-scale experiments, producing 750 peer-reviewed reports, that the authors say would have been impossible elsewhere.

The Canadian government's plans to shutter the ELA fostered widespread concern among scientists. The authors reflect that concern in arguing: "In a world facing unprecedented effects of global climate change, we can ill afford to abandon a facility that offers the unique combination of long-term monitoring and the capacity for ecosystem-scale experimentation."

Glacial thinning has sharply accelerated at major South American icefields

ScienceDaily (Sep. 5, 2012) ? For the past four decades scientists have monitored the ebbs and flows of the icefields in the southernmost stretch of South America's vast Andes Mountains, detecting an overall loss of ice as the climate warms. A new study, however, finds that the rate of glacier thinning has increased by about half over the last dozen years in the Southern Patagonian Icefield, compared to the 30 years prior to 2000.

"Patagonia is kind of a poster child for rapidly changing glacier systems," said Michael Willis, lead author of the study and a research associate at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. "We are characterizing a region that is supplying water to sea level at a big rate, compared to its size." The Southern Patagonian Icefield together with its smaller northern neighbor, the Northern Patagonian Icefield, are the largest icefields in the southern hemisphere -- excluding Antarctica. The new study shows that the icefields are losing ice faster since the turn of the century and contributing more to sea level rise than ever before.

Earlier studies determined that between the 1970's and 2000 both icefields, which feed into surrounding oceans as they melt, together raised global sea levels by an average of .042 millimeters each year. Since 2000, Willis and his colleagues found that number increased to 0.067 mm of sea level rise on average per year -- about two percent of total annual sea level rise since 1998.

The Southern Icefield, which Willis and his colleagues focused on, loses around 20 billion tons (gigatonnes) of ice each year, the scientists calculated, which is roughly 9,000 times the volume of water stored by Hoover Dam annually. Cumulatively, the Southern Patagonian Icefield has lost enough water over the last 12 years to cover the entire United States with 2.7 centimeters (about 1 inch) of water. Include melting of both icefields, and that amount increases to 3.3 centimeters (1.2 inches), the scientists report.

The collaborative study between scientists from Cornell University and the Center for Scientific Studies (CECs) in Valdivia, Chile, is set to be published 5 September in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

To map the changing Southern Patagonian Icefield, Willis and his colleagues collected information from two different satellite missions. Using 156 satellite images taken over the 12-year period by NASA's Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument and data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, the scientists mapped how the Southern Patagonian Icefield changed in height and overall size between February 2000 and March 2012.

The team compared its findings with a different set of observations from twin satellites known as the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE).

"Using ASTER, we think that we have a good idea of where things are changing. But with GRACE we get a good idea of when things are changing. So we have this powerful hybrid," Willis said. From their new map, the scientists identified individual glaciers and how much each has thinned -- i.e. shrunk in height -since 2000. On average, the Southern Patagonian Icefield glaciers have thinned by about 1.8 meters (5.9 feet) per year.

"We find some glaciers are stagnant and even that some have advanced slightly but on the whole, retreat and thinning is prevalent," Willis said. "Interestingly, we see thinning occurring up to the highest elevations, where presumably it is coldest."

Warming air temperatures contribute to the thinning at the highest and coldest regions of the ice field, Willis said. Moreover warmer temperatures mean greater chances that rain, as opposed to snow, will fall on and around the glaciers. This double threat of warming and more rain may, in turn, change the amount of water beneath the glaciers. More water means less friction, so the glaciers start to move faster as they thin, moving even more ice in to the oceans. Rising lakes at the front of the glaciers may also play a part as they eat away at the icy edges faster, causing the glaciers to retreat even further.

"Precipitation is a huge component and likely causes large changes in mass input, and therefore net balance," said Alex Gardner, an assistant professor at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, who was not involved with the study but studies glaciers and ice sheets. "[This new research] shows very high rates of mass loss and it would be great to see a follow up study on how lakes modify these rates of loss."

Even though scientists have yet to understand exactly how warming temperatures will continue to influence these South American icefields, this new study provides valuable information for future predictions, Gardner said.

"A study like this really provides a strong data set to validate and calibrate glacial models that we could then use to simulate future changes in glaciers," he said. "Modeling is really the only tool we have to provide future predictions."

HTC holding U.S. event on Sept. 19, new devices likely

Android Central

It's fall refresh time, and it looks like HTC's getting geared up to unleash an arsenal of new products in just a couple of weeks time. This afternoon we received the 'save the date' reminder above, inviting us to an event in New York City on Sept. 19. For those keeping track of all the events and announcements we're expecting around that time, that's 24 hours after Moto and Intel strut their stuff in London, and just a couple of days ahead of the expected iPhone 5 retail release. (Yeah, it's going to be a crazy few weeks.)

What's particularly interesting is that our sister site WPCentral also received the same invite, suggesting that HTC might unveil not only new Android devices, but some Windows Phone 8 stuff, too. The WPC kids have been been hearing rumors of a possible HTC "Accord" or "8X" over the past few days, so we'll have to see if that materializes on the 19th.

On the Android side, possibilities include that weird iMac-looking tablet thing, as well as the perpetually-rumored Verizon-bound 1080p-screened 5-inch device. Any more wild theories? Throw 'em out in the comments. Both Android Central and WPCentral will be live from New York City on the 19th to bring you live coverage of whatever HTC's got up its sleeve.

New 360-Degree Photo Shows Latest View from Mars Rover Curiosity

A new full-circle photo from NASA's Curiosity rover shows the robotic explorer's fresh tracks on Mars as it continues trekking east toward its first science destination.

Curiosity drove roughly 70 feet (21 meters) on Aug. 30, the mission's 21st Martian day, toward a spot called Glenelg. This site, which is located 1,300 feet (400 m) away from where the rover touched down on Mars last month, is home to three different types of terrain, making it an intriguing science target.

Photos from Curiosity's navigation camera were stitched together to create this 360-degree view of the Red Planet. Fresh tracks from the rover's drive last week can also be seen across the sprawling terrain.

It will take several weeks for Curiosity to reach Glenelg, and the rover may make a stop to test functions on its robotic arm, NASA officials said in an update last week. Once it reaches its destination, Curiosity is expected to begin using its drill for the first time.

On Sept. 1, Curiosity drove an additional 98 feet (30 meters) and tested its "visual odometry" system, which enables the rover to determine the distance it has traveled by analyzing its own images, agency officials said. On its wheels, the rover has imprints of the Morse Code symbols for "JPL" ? the abbreviation for California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which houses Curiosity's mission control. As the rover drives over Mars, it leaves patterns in the Martian dirt that scientist can study to calculate how far it has traveled.

Over the weekend, Curiosity also performed a test analysis using its Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument, and collected a sample of the Martian atmosphere with its Sample Analysis at Mars instrument (SAM).

The $2.5 billion Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars Aug. 5 (PDT), is carrying 10 different science instruments and 17 cameras. The car-size rover is embarking on a two-year mission to determine whether the Martian environment could ever have supported microbial life.

No talks between NFL, union as season nears

(AP) ? Officially ? at least in their comments ? NFL players and coaches aren't concerning themselves with refereering.

The NFL and its locked-out officials weren't talking two days before the season begins, a clear indication replacements will be on the field for Wednesday night's opener.

Doesn't matter, according to many of the guys who call the plays or carry them out.

"We're going to play the games regardless," Chargers All-Pro safety Eric Weddle said Monday.

"Everyone makes mistakes. I make mistakes. It's just the way human nature is. You can't get hard on guys that are trying to do the best they can. You've just got to deal with it.

"Each week, each game, each practice, they'll get better, so it's not a concern of ours. Regardless, we've got to go out there and execute and take it out of their hands. Let's go out and play good football, execute at a high level and then they won't be in position to throw flags and make judgment calls."

Broncos coach John Fox echoed those thoughts.

"In this game you've got to overcome a lot of things," Fox said. "You've got to overcome the other team. Sometimes you've got to overcome your own mistakes. So, officials have always been a part of it and they've never been an excuse. So, I don't care who's out there, we've got to worry about how we're playing and we'll deal with whatever they call, whether it's old guys, new guys, middle guys. Their stuff sometimes influences the game, but you've got to overcome that."

Both sides met for three days last week, but did not reach an agreement to end the three-month lockout. The replacement officials who worked the preseason games amid much criticism will handle the Cowboys at Giants opener and the other 15 games on the weekend.

"You just have to play your game. You can't even pay any attention to it now at this point," Giants receiver Victor Cruz said Monday. "You just have to go out there and trust that they are spending time in the meeting rooms and those referee rooms, reading the plays and getting the calls down."

The league and the NFL Referees Association, which covers more than 120 on-field officials, are at odds over salary, retirement benefits and operational issues. The NFL has said its offer includes annual pay increases that could earn an experienced official more than $200,000 annually by 2018. The NFLRA has disputed the value of the proposal, insisting it would ultimately reduce their compensation.

With the stalemate, the NFL will use replacements in the regular season for the first time since the opening week of 2001, days after the terrorist attacks.

Many of those replacements came from the highest levels of college football, something that has changed drastically this year. The current replacement crews are comprised of mainly of officials from the Arena League, and the NCAA Division II and III levels.

The league said it will handle the officiating assignments the same way it does in any other year, with the crew for Wednesday night's game not being announced in advance ? even though there's increased interest in who works the game.

"It's one of those things where you just look out there and it's like the difference between having a high school guy play in the NFL versus an NFL guy playing in the NFL," Vikings punter Chris Kluwe said. "The speed's totally different. Those guys are trying hard, but they're just not used to the speed of the game and they're missing a lot of stuff."

But they are missing stuff for both teams. Coaches and players alike are trying not to let that enter their minds as they prepare for their openers.

"I know that these guys are coming in here doing the best that they can, but it's really out of our control. It doesn't matter if we have flag football officials, we've got to go out and play the best that we can and hopefully get a few calls along the way," Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel said.
