Advice For Low Income Pet Owners - Dog Chat - Dog Forums - I ...

I would like to start this post by saying that I have noticed a lot of people who come here to ask for help, and when they mention they cannot afford the vet, the general consensus is that if you cannot afford the vet, that you shouldn't own a pet. Most of the time, an answer like that may make the answerer feel like they have said what needed to be said, but it leaves the pet owner feeling rejected, as if to say that poor people do not deserve to have a best friend (their pet). I've seen many people who adopted their pets long before the recession and raised the pet, and that family is the only family they know. For a person to be told they must abandon or euthanize their beloved family member because they have fallen on hard times can feel devastating.

I want to let everyone know about the programs that are out there that offer financial aid for vet visits, low cost or free vaccinations and spaying for low income families, and the many dog food drives available. Also, if you live near a veterinary school, most will examine, vaccinate, spay/neuter, and treat your pets for low cost or sometimes free.

Everyone has heard of CareCredit.com which let's you have credit for vet visits, but this is only for people with decent credit (yes, they do a credit check) and chances are that if you are low income, you probably have bad credit.

Pet health insurance is available, but that is only good for people who can afford a monthly bill and a deductible at the time of the visit.

I believe that even if a person is poor, that the dog is still lucky to have a loving family rather locked in a cage the rest of its life, or euthanized.

I want to provide a list of assistance programs so that we can refer people to this thread instead of condemning them for not having money to get vet care. Hopefully, that will keep us from turning away those who need our help, and leaving them feeling like they've been rejected.

To turn away a dog owner is to turn away their poor innocent dog.

I will compile a list and post it here when I'm finished.

Bankruptcy Law Network ? A consumer education bankruptcy blog

Six years ago, on January 24, 2007, the very first post of Bankruptcy Law Network went live on the internet.?Jay Fleischman,?? New York bankruptcy attorney, along with Steven Otto,? Pennsylvania consumer attorney, gathered together a group of consumer bankruptcy attorneys? and talked us into participating in this newfangled thing calling ?blogging? on the internet?about bankruptcy and? the impact on every day folks after the 2005? Act passed and changed the Bankruptcy Code. Along the way, our blogs have been humorous, thought-provoking, scholarly, but mostly written for consumers. As Mr. Fleischman explained in that first post:

Bankruptcy Law Network is? ?a cooperative effort on the part of?consumer bankruptcy lawyers from around the country. ?On this site you will soon find a wealth?of knowledge and information about Chapter 7 and Chapter 13, protecting your rights in?bankruptcy, consumer finance issues, and more. ?We are not a law firm, and are not a referral network. ?In fact, none of our attorneys are?affiliated with one another at all. ?We share a common desire to provide you, the consumer, with?information that will help you make the best decisions for your situation.?

Also along the way, our members have grown professionally and personally.? Our membership stays busy with their practices and expansions into other areas of law. For example,?? Jay Fleischman now is both a California and New York attorney, having successfully passed the California bar exam in 2011. In addition, Mr. Fleischman has formed a company which educates other attorneys on?marketing and law office management. ? Along with Mr. Fleischman, Cathy Moran, our northern Californian colleague has held a number of seminars assisting attorneys with online presence and marketing,?along with Ms. Moran?s instructional seminars on best practices in consumer bankruptcy.? Mr. Fleischman and Ms. Moran have also branched into non-bankruptcy financial blogging education for consumers at Consumer Ledger.? Joining Mr. Fleischman in another venture is Gene Melchionne, our Connecticut colleague, as he and Mr. Fleischman broadcast over the internet for those folks who would rather hear financial advice than read off the computer screen at Money Go Roundtable, broadcast via iTunes.??Another Californian colleague, Doug Jacobs, has joined with Cathy? Moran in an attempt to track and explain mortgage modifications for consumers.

Along the way, our members have been recognized and honored for their service to consumers.?Brett Weiss, our Maryland member, along with Adrian Lapas, a North Carolina contributor, were awarded the 2011 Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.? Mr. Weiss testified before Congress on the issue of the need for regulation of credit card abusive practices in 2009. ?? In addition, Adrian Lapas testified before the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, Judiciary Committee, in front of the House of Representatives on April 22, 2010, regarding H.R. 5043, the ?Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act?.??Twelve of our own have been named NACBA Member of the Month. ?Ten serve or have served as state chairs, as a liaison between NACBA ( National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys) and the consumer bankruptcy attorneys/state legislative bodies.? This writer was pleased to serve on the American Bar Association?s Task Force on Attorney Discipline Best Practices Working Group, Ad Hoc Committee on Bankruptcy Court Structure and Insolvency Processes, ABA Section of Business Law?which developed a working paper on Best? Practices for Bankruptcy Attorneys.

Our Kansas colleague,? Jill Michaux, was recently appointed to the Advisory Committee on Bankruptcy Rules by Chief Justice (Supreme Court) John Roberts.?? Ms. Michaux was one of the early members of Bankruptcy Law Network; she was also one of the early members of the National Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys.

Our members are frequently quoted in the national media.? Chip Parker, our Florida member, has been interviewed as an expert in the area of mortgage foreclosure litigation in bankruptcy court ? by national media, such as The Rolling Stone, CNN, The New York Times, and First Coast News. This writer was interviewed about litigation for a November 11, 2007 issue of BusinessWeek article entitled ?Prisoners of Debt? regarding zombie debt.?? Along the way, our members have been recognized and honored for their service to consumers.?Wendell Sherk, our Missouri member, was named a Super Lawyer in 2011-2012 by his peers.? (As a matter of fact, this writer believes a number of our members have been named Super Lawyers by their peers?including Ms. Moran in 2007-2012 and Ms. Michaux in 2008-2012.)

While continuing to blog and educate both consumers and other attorneys, our members give back to their communities:? our other Florida member, Carmen Dellutri, is well known for his community service and organizes food and blood drives and safe holiday events for children. Mr. Dellutri also offers free?seminars to the public on Mortgage Foreclosure Defense.?

Our other members are equally busy, video blogging (Andy Miofsky, Illinois and Dana Wilkinson, South Carolina, along with Jonathan Ginsberg, Georgia), written blogs (Kevin Gipson, Louisiana;? Susanne Robicsek,? North Carolina;? Kent Anderson, Oregon;? Kurt O?Keefe, Michigan; Nick Ortiz, and Jed Berliner, both Massachusetts;? Craig Andresen, Minnesota; and? Peter Orville, New York) ? whether they are known for? consumer litigation (Rachel Foley), serving on state bar committees (this writer),? or publishing books, such as our own Brett Weiss, Maryland.???? Mr. Weiss recently released ?Chapter 11 For Individual Debtors:? A Collier Monograph?, a work to assist attorneys in filing Chapter 11 consumer cases. ?This book was published by Lexis Nexis and co-authored by Dan Press.

It?s been an exciting six years for our Network; we have come a long way in understanding the 2005 Act and blogging.?? Stick around ? the best is yet to come!?? This writer is pleased to serve as president of Bankruptcy Law Network for 2012-2013, along with vice president, Kevin Gipson; secretary, Kurt O?Keefe; treasurer, Kent Anderson; member-at-large, Susanne Robicsek; and ex officio members of the board, former presidents, Gene Melchionne and Jay Fleischman.? Hold on tight, keep reading, and pay attention ? it may be a bumpy ride, but it?s never boring here at Bankruptcy Law Network!!

Advice About Car Financing After Bankruptcy

Getting a car loan after bankruptcy does not have to be an overly difficult process. Contrary to popular belief, there are actually many financing options for people who do not have good credit. Although these options may take a little more research, and cost more than a standard loan, they can still be a worthwhile option for those in desperate need of a car after bankruptcy. Below are a few of the steps that you should take to get the best car loan after bankruptcy:

One ? Take Care Of Mistakes On Your Credit History
Just because a certain item shows up on your credit history does not mean that it is true. The credit monitoring agencies are well known for making mistakes on records based on a misspelled name or a typo with the Social Security number of a borrower. Go over your credit history with a fine toothed comb and make sure to immediately contest any discrepancies that you may see.

It may take a while to get these mistakes fixed on your credit record. However, the waiting period is certainly worth it. You can save tens of thousands of dollars over the life of a car loan by simply fixing the mistakes in your credit history.

Two ? Expand Your Financing Options
Because of the resources available to you via the Internet, you no longer have to get car financing after bankruptcy from a local company. You now have financial companies competing for your business from across the world, and you should take full advantage of this new power.

Note the differences in currency if you do decide to do business with a financing company overseas. There are also some international laws that may apply to your situation depending on the country that you choose to obtain financing from. In most cases, it is not necessary to go outside of the United States in order to find a good financing option.

Three ? Learn The Different Types Of Financing Options Available
When you are trying to get car loans after bankruptcy, you have a number of different loan formats that you can try. The first major distinction between loan formats is the secured loan versus the unsecured loan.

Most borrowers prefer to have an unsecured loan for car financing after bankruptcy. However, secured loans usually bring lower interest rates and more flexible terms. The only difference between a secured loan and unsecured loan is that physical property of the borrower is used to securitize the amount borrowed in a secured loan. An unsecured loan is more like a credit card.

There are also many short-term loan companies that specialize in car loans after bankruptcy. These companies usually have terms that are very flexible in exchange for a slightly higher interest rate and a shorter term. In order to determine which one of these types of companies is best for you, you must take personal stock of your financial situation.

Four ? Use Online Comparison Websites
In your research for car financing after bankruptcy, you should come across websites whose sole purpose is to compare car financing companies side by side. This will shorten the amount of time you have to spend online. Many of these companies will also offer better deals from these websites than they will on their own websites, as they know that a great deal of traffic comes through the online comparison websites.

Below are a few reputable companies that are well known for offering good car loans after bankruptcy.

HSBC ? A lender specializing in helping those with less than perfect credit, HSBC has some of the best terms available for people looking for a new car.

Bank of America ? The recession did not make all large banks close their doors. Bank of America is a great friend to those with bad credit.

Westamerica Branch ? If you can get a loan from Westamerica Branch, you will have some of the best rates on the market when it comes to purchasing a car.

Private survey shows employers added 192,000 jobs in January

New York?

Private-sector employers added 192,000 jobs in January, more than economists had expected, indicating Friday?s jobs report from the government may be a good one.

?

The numbers, from a private survey by payroll processor ADP, provided a glimmer of optimism about the economy the same morning the government reported the nation?s GDP contracted in the fourth quarter.

?

?It feels to me that the job market is improving,? said Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody?s Analytics. ?Job growth has accelerated.?

?

Job growth is now hovering at about 175,000 jobs a month, he said, which should be enough to bring the unemployment rate down every month. Zandi predicts the unemployment rate, currently at 7.8%, will fall to 7.3% by the end of the year, and will dip below 7% by this time next year.

?

Although the ADP report showed weakness in the manufacturing sector, probably related to sluggish European economies, it showed growth in construction, trade and professional and business services.

?

Small businesses, with one to 49 employees, provided the bulk of the hiring, ADP said. Small businesses added 115,000 jobs. Medium businesses, with 50 to 499 employees, added 79,000. Large businesses actually shed 2,000 jobs in January.

?

The ADP report only tracks private-sector employment, while Friday?s jobs report also includes the government sector, which has been contracting for the better part of two years. The numbers usually provide some guidance to economists about what to expect from the national job figures, although last month, ADP showed employers had added 215,000 private-sector jobs, while the government figures showed that the private sector added just 168,000.

?

Zandi was quick to emphasize the good news about the ADP report, while downplaying the surprising GDP contraction. He said that when the government revises the number, he expects it will show growth, rather than contraction, in the fourth quarter.

?

?I will be surprised if we end up with negative quarter,? he said.

?

Still, GDP growth will only grow 1.5% in the first quarter of this year, he said, which is not a very impressive number. That?s because a payroll tax was restored after two years, meaning consumers have less take-home pay, and probably will spend less as they adjust to their new finances.

?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, on the brink of passing 14,000, was down in early market trading.
