Oregon State defeats California 62 - 14

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, two armed men wearing masks robbed the Chevron in North Plains.

Then around 1 p.m. Saturday, two similar looking men robbed the 7-11 stores on SW Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.

The clerk told deputies that a man wearing a ski mask entered the store, jumped over the counter, and threatened her with a gun. She was able to activate an alarm, which sent the suspect running out of the store. She was not hurt during the robbery. Deputies investigating the robbery believe that the suspect jumped into a waiting black BMW 4-door sedan. They are not sure how many occupants were in the BMW.

The suspects in both robberies are similar, but detectives don't know whether the robberies are related.

Population of Africa's mountain gorillas rises

(AP) ? The population of Uganda's mountain gorillas has grown to 400, up from 302 in 2006, according to a census conducted last year, bringing the total number of mountain gorillas in Africa to 880 and giving hope to conservationists trying to save the critically endangered species.

Uganda is now home to nearly half of the world's mountain gorillas remaining in the wild, a source of confidence for a country that has come to depend heavily on the popular apes for substantial tourism revenue. The rest of the surviving mountain gorillas ? the species Gorilla beringei beringei ? are in Congo and Rwanda.

"The increase in the population of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is testimony to the sound natural resource management policies that are being implemented in the protected areas," Uganda's Ministry of Tourism said in a statement received Friday. "This result confirms beyond reasonable doubt that Uganda's conservation efforts are paying off."

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a network of forested jungle deep in the country's southwestern frontier, is recognized by UNESCO as a heritage site of world value. A permit to track gorillas there costs at least $500 and the World Wildlife Fund estimates that each gorilla brings in up to $1 million in revenue each year for the East African country.

The census shows a stunning recovery for a species that once faced a real threat of extinction. Mountain gorillas in the wild still face threats ranging from habitat loss to poaching, especially in Congo, where lawlessness in the country's vast eastern territory has allowed illegal hunters to prosper. Mountain gorillas are hunted for their meat in Congo, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Even a common cold can kill a mountain gorilla, as species is particularly vulnerable to respiratory diseases usually associated with humans.

The conservation group Gorilla Doctors said the population growth was partly due to "extreme conservation" methods such as daily ranger monitoring in the forest. Ugandan wildlife officials have been able to build successful partnerships with local communities in part by pouring some of the revenue into local projects, converting previously hostile groups into friendly advocates for the gorillas' survival.

"The mountain gorilla is the only non-human great ape that is actually growing in number," said Mike Cranfield of Gorilla Doctors. "The growth of the mountain gorilla population can be attributed to the intensive conservation and collaboration between multiple conservation groups and government authorities."

Illinois adds 4,800 jobs, unemployment rate sits at 8.8 percent

CHICAGO, Ill -- Illinois added 4,800 jobs in October and the unemployment rate stayed at 8.8 percent for the second consecutive month, according to a Friday press release from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).

"Job growth and an unemployment rate significantly lower than one year ago shows steady economic progress," said IDES Director Jay Rowell.

The IDES said that October 2012 job gains were driven by the Leisure and Hospitality, and Education and Health Services sectors. Manufacturing added an additional 900 jobs in October.

The amount of total unemployed persons also fell by 1,100 to a total of 581,300.

The IDES also said that Illinois has added over 158,000 private sector jobs since January of 2010. The leading growth area over that time frame is Professional and Business Services, gaining over 78,000 jobs. Government has lost the most jobs in that time frame, down over 27,000 jobs.

Over-interpretation of studies in the anti-aspartame movement ...

Despite thirty years of research demonstrating aspartame to be safe, and no scientifically plausible reason to be concerned in the first place, there continues to be a large community on the Internet, as well as in the general population, that insists aspartame is dangerous. There are even a couple of documentaries available (one of them Sweet Misery, I have discussed elsewhere). I would like to focus this brief article on how that group has inflated the results of an actual study that is effectively neutral in its conclusions.

A ?weak? aspartame/cancer study

Very recently a study?(entitled ?Consumption of artificial sweetener? and sugar-containing soda and risk of lymphoma and leukemia in men and women?)?from Brigham and Women?s Hospital came out which looked at 22 years of data on consumption of soft drinks (both sugar- and aspartame-sweetened) and incidence of lymphoma and leukemia. Although the study is getting touted by the anti-aspartame community as convincing evidence demonstrating that aspartame causes these cancers, the actual study results are significantly less forceful. Their conclusion (emphasis mine):

Although our findings preserve the possibility of a detrimental effect of a constituent of diet soda, such as aspartame, on select cancers, the inconsistent sex effects and occurrence of an apparent cancer risk in individuals who consume regular soda do not permit the ruling out of chance as an explanation.

They were only able to tease out effects for lymphoma if they analyzed men and women separately, and even then only for men (RR 1.3 even then, the low end of the relative risk was 1.01, which means no increased risk). In fact, in men consumption of regular, non-diet soda was associated with lymphoma. For leukemia, on the other hand, they could only get an effect if they combined the sexes. The low end of increases risk (RR 1.4) there actually started at 1.00 or, in other words, no increased risk. Unless they had planned it from the start, it strikes me as odd that they would use different analyses for each of the illnesses, as that ends up feeling like pure data mining to find an effect.

So in essence the study found nearly no effect. In fact, Brigham and Women?s Hospital, where the research was performed and promoted, ended up apologizing?after it was published for pushing such a ?weak? study (their words) to the media for reporting. It looks like it is scheduled to get published in the December 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, though interestingly the?table of contents for the November issue of the journal lists an editorial commenting on the article.

The anti-aspartame community responds

It should come as no surprise that this study was not taken for what it is by the anti-aspartame folks out there. Instead, headline after headline says something along the lines of ?Aspartame linked with cancer in 22-year study?. Sometimes the word ?Landmark? is thrown in for extra effect. For example, one blog goes out of its way to quote from the results, except for studiously avoiding the part about regular soda also being linked. That same article also cites a cancer study which has been roundly criticized by both the FDA and the European Food Agency (EFSA).

Industry scare tactics?

Where it gets extra interesting is the bit of conspiracy-thinking that suggests that the reason the school came out with an ?apology? and possible retraction was due to industry scare tactics, and not because its results show almost no effect. None other than Joe Mercola had this to say (emphasis my own):

After all, can you imagine the liability the food and beverage industries, not to mention virtually every public health agency in the US, would face were there convincing evidence that aspartame is carcinogenic? They simply cannot afford such evidence to be accepted.

As should be clear now, to call this ?convincing evidence? is speaking well above what the evidence actually seems to demonstrate. There is also that hint of conspiracy theory that the only reason the hospital issued the release was through some unspecified action of the food and beverage industry.?Actually finding a strong link between aspartame would, I think, garner enough attention to get lots of funding to look ?deeper? into other products that have been deemed by the Internet to be unsafe.

But at the levels we are talking about in this study, even fruits and dairy products have been found to be linked with lymphoma.?For example,?in one study?dairy and fried meat were associated (OR of 1.5 between lowest and highest) with NHL.?Another study, looked at tobacco (3.5), barbecued?meat (1.7), salted meat (2.4) and beer (5.5). The high end risk factor of those in some cases goes well into the 20s.

Summary

So was aspartame linked with leukemia and lymphoma? It seems so, but weakly, and so was regular soda. And both had lower risk numbers than other dietary factors that apply to the average person (even one avoiding soda). In other words, it seems that, as the cliche goes, nearly everything is in some way associated with various cancers. So to claim that aspartame has been found to be a particularly insidious culprit is simply untrue.

Griffith University completes 3 year study

Children who learn how to swim at a young age are reaching many developmental milestones earlier than the norm.

Researchers from the Griffith Institute for Educational Research surveyed parents of 7000 under-fives from Australia, New Zealand and the US over three years.

A further 180 children aged 3, 4 and 5 years have been involved in intensive testing, making it the world's most comprehensive study into early-years swimming.

Lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen says the study shows young children who participate in early-years swimming achieve a wide range of skills earlier than the normal population.

"Many of these skills are those that help young children into the transition into formal learning contexts such as pre-school or school.

"The research also found significant differences between the swimming cohort and non-swimmers regardless of socio-economic background.

"While the two higher socio-economic groups performed better than the lower two in testing, the four SES groups all performed better than the normal population.

The researchers also found there were no gender differences between the research cohort and the normal population.

As well as achieving physical milestones faster, children also scored significantly better in visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring in and drawing lines and shapes, and many mathematically-related tasks. Their oral expression was also better as well as in the general areas of literacy and numeracy.

"Many of these skills are highly valuable in other learning environments and will be of considerable benefit for young children as they transition into pre-schools and school."

The study is a joint project between Griffith University, Kids Alive Swim Program and Swim Australia.
