International Entertainment News: Dairyland Power Uses FreeWave ...

Dairyland Power Uses FreeWave Technologies Wireless Data Radios For Distribution Automation Applications

FreeWave radios deployed in a large coverage area by electric power co-op

BOULDER, Colo., Aug. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- FreeWave Technologies, (http://www.freewave.com), manufacturer of the most reliable, high-performance spread spectrum and licensed radios for critical data transmission, today announced that it has deployed wireless radios for La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Dairyland Power Cooperative (http://www.dairynet.com/), one of the area's largest wholesale electric suppliers. Dairyland uses FreeWave's FGR-115 serial radios for a variety of distribution automation applications. It also uses FreeWave's HTPlus radios for certain applications requiring more effective throughput. The cooperative serves more than 600,000 customers in a service area of 45,000 square miles. Dairyland provides wholesale electricity to 25 member distribution cooperatives and 16 municipal utilities in four states (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois).

"FreeWave has been a trusted partner for several years and we continue to depend on its wireless data radio solutions for critical data transmission," said Ken Graves, manager of telecommunications services at Dairyland Power. "Most of our customers live in rural communities. Prior to using FreeWave radios, we researched a variety of potential vendors. It was essential to find a communication solution that was proven to transmit reliable data on a real-time basis, despite remote locations, a hilly landscape and steep terrain. Not only did FreeWave radios prove to have effective throughput, link performance and noise immunity, but they were easily integrated into our existing network. We are pleased with the radios we have deployed and are considering FreeWave for future wireless data radio needs."

When Dairyland first implemented FreeWave radios it deployed a small installation base of FGR-115 radios. Based on the performance of the initial deployment, a decision was then made to expand the FreeWave radio network. After a distribution automation study comparing various types of communication technology that faced harsh weather conditions and line-of-sight challenges from hilly terrain, the robust and reliable data transmission provided by FreeWave helped Dairyland Power make its decision to continue using the FGR-115 exclusively in its distribution network. FreeWave solutions are currently being used for a variety of distribution automation applications including AMI backhaul, transmission capacitor bank control, transmission line sectionalizing, and fault detection and isolation.

The FGR-115 is an early version of FreeWave's current product, the FGR2-CE. FreeWave's products are 100 percent backwards compatible, making customers' investments secure. The FGR-115 offers real-time remote diagnostics and setup, transparent to network communications and versatility - a single radio can operate simultaneously as a master, a slave and as a repeater. The quality and versatility of the FGR-115 has led to its use in locations ranging from Mount Everest and Antarctica to the Amazon rainforest. According to Graves, Dairyland has been especially pleased with the FGR-115's link performance, single system integration and overall reliability. The FreeWave HTPlus Ethernet radio is ideal for customers who need an industrial grade high-speed Ethernet radios that operate in harsh environments and noisy RF conditions. It delivers data at a rate of up to 867 Kbps and is an ideal radio for SCADA backhaul networks.

"We are pleased to provide wireless data radio solutions to Dairyland Power Cooperative," said Curt Goldman, market manager of utilities at FreeWave Technologies. "FreeWave strives to provide the most trusted solution for distribution automation applications, and our entire team, from the engineers to the factory to customer support, works hard to ensure we are meeting all of our customer's needs. We look forward to a continued partnership with Dairyland Power."

'He's a straight shooter': Voters react to Ryan's speech

Yahoo! News asked voters to share their reactions to Paul Ryan's address at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday. In their own words, here are perspectives from voters across the nation.

***

Paul Ryan's acceptance speech at the RNC was hyped and full of hope, but he answered the call, with the bases loaded, and hit it out of the park.

First, how cute are his kids! The one boy seemed to relish the spotlight a bit more than his siblings, waving a little longer. There's Betty, his mom. Ryan showed genuine emotion talking about her success, getting an education and starting a business after his father died suddenly. There was the priceless snuggle between Betty and his daughter.

My favorite line was about college graduates in their 20s in their childhood bedrooms staring at faded Obama posters, wondering when their life would begin. I had my college graduate home in her childhood bedroom last year. The humor but also hopelessness of that hit home!

He had substance. He exercises great efficiency with a quip or a one-liner. He makes each point cogent and uncluttered. I got the impression that he's a straight-shooter, without being the at-times bombastic Chris Christie.

-- Jennifer Morrison

***

Ryan's use of imagery, one part of his speech particularly, resonated: "What did the taxpayers get out of the Obama stimulus? More debt. That money wasn't just spent and wasted--it was borrowed, spent, and wasted. Maybe the greatest waste of all was time. Here we were, faced with a massive job crisis--so deep that if everyone out of work stood in single file, that unemployment line would stretch the length of the entire American continent. You would think that any president, whatever his party, would make job creation, and nothing else, his first order of economic business."

I am one of the unemployed in that line. Ryan's speech reminds me that President Obama has held 106 fundraisers and played golf during the last six months without meeting with his jobs creation council. I think I am becoming tired of "standing in line."

-- Lyn Brooks

***

While Ryan's speech didn't convince me to vote for Romney, it didn't convince me not too, either. I like the idea of having a younger leader in that position, someone of my generation who likes the same music I do. Ryan brought a laugh from the crowd when he compared his musical tastes to Romney's and said his ranged from "AC/DC to Zeppelin." I also liked when he highlighted that he and Romney were a generation apart, which I think is a good thing.

One part of the speech that did resonate with me was when he said, "For those who feel left out or passed, over, you have not failed. Your leaders have failed you."

-- Freddy Sherman

***

Wow. (Note the lack of exclamation point.)

I'm traditionally a very decided voter, but not this election year. I was hoping Paul Ryan's speech would give me a push toward one party or the other, but it really fell short.

I agree that Obama should have put jobs first instead of Obamacare. Ryan says he and Romney will build 12 million jobs within four years if elected. I'm skeptical because Obama has also promised jobs. Maybe seeing details of their 12-million-jobs plan could cinch my vote for the Republicans in 2012. Republicans refer to Reagan like Democrats turn to JFK and Clinton.

I was not impressed that he referenced Reagan's "trickle down" economics. That plan didn't work in the 1980s, and it won't get us out of this horrible mess now. I went into this convention as an undecided voter, and I'm leaving Paul Ryan's speech as one.

--- Ronna Ross Pennington

***

Ryan's speech was full of smugness and carefully worded deceptions, and I didn't like it. It didn't engender trust or confidence for me. What he could have done was talked straight about issues that matter to me--women's rights, education, and global relationships. Somehow, they did not make his list of priorities. He did say that he has a simple answer to our problems: stop spending money we don't have. He says he and Mitt will solve the nation's economic problems--but doesn't say how. Simply put, his attempts at showing sincerity and confidence turned me off.

The strong protect the weak, he says, and our rights come from nature and God and not from government? but his platform didn't explain how the "weak" would be protected. He said, "The best among us have protected our freedoms and they're protecting us now," but didn't prove what those freedoms are.

Paul Ryan certainly revved up the crowd, but he didn't rev up me.

-- Jennifer Wolfe

***

I may not yet be sold on Mitt Romney for president, but one thing is for sure: I am sold on Paul Ryan for vice president.

Ryan was charming, witty, and downright truthful.

Ryan appealed to young voters--like me--who are concerned whether they will find a job once they graduate college.?

Finally, Paul Ryan made me breathe a little easier concerning Romney's religion. While I am no advocate of Mormonism, the fact that Romney is devoted to his church is a positive trait that he can take to the White House.

Thank you, Paul Ryan, for restoring my faith in the Republican Party.

-- Josh McKinney

***

The economy and Obamacare were high points in vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan's Republican National Convention address. Looking not a year over the age 35, the 42-year-old Ryan appeared as elegant as he spoke. With not even a slight stutter in his words, he drove his points across with authority and a deliverance that pre-law students could only dream of possessing.

I must admit Ryan grabbed my attention and simply refused to let go. I knew very little about him until tonight. I feel a little more clearly about his platform and what he feels Mitt Romney could potentially do if in office. As of this moment, the GOP has a strong lead with my vote.

-- D. Emile Delaney

***

Ryan's strength is that, instead of threatening to throw out the government programs that so many rely on, he and Mitt Romney will work with Congress to cut spending and create a national government that will live within its means. Ryan understands the importance of family and our country's values, which are founded on a legacy of hard work and thrift.

His speech gave me hope that with Mitt Romney's business acumen and Ryan's determination for real government change, together they will provide the leadership we need to steer our economic future onto a course of prosperity.

-- William Ray Fullmer

***

Ryan said, "We have suffered no shortage of words in the White House. What's missing is leadership in the White House." I am in total agreement. I know I am not the only voter who supported Obama in '08 only to realize that for the past 44 months, people are not really that much better off.

Ryan took the time to bring to our attention that it is good to be successful, that accomplishing good things is something Americans should be proud of and strive to accomplish. Unfortunately, it seems as if some people feel that being successful is cause for shame.

A Romney-Ryan ticket may take us to a better destination.

Hurricane Isaac storm surge tops levee in Plaquemines Parish

People sit on a bench along Lake Pontchartrain as Isaac approaches. (AP)

A storm surge from Hurricane Isaac topped a levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans early Wednesday, officials said, trapping those who chose not to evacuate.

Plaquemines Parish president Billy Nungesser said the 18-mile, 8-foot-high levee--which is not part of the near $15 billion federal levee system constructed after Hurricane Katrina--was in the process of being raised.

"We knew we had a potential storm surge of nine to 12 feet--we had an eight foot levee," Nungresser said on CNN. "We're trying to get the few people who have stayed out. We've got a serious situation over there."

[Live-blog: Hurricane Isaac batters New Orleans, Gulf Coast]

Isaac made landfall at 6:45 p.m. CDT Tuesday in Plaquemines Parish, and the slow-moving Category 1 hurricane--now centered about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans with maximum sustained winds topping 80 mph--is expected to dump as much as 20 inches of rain in several parts of Louisiana.

"Not only did we see the worst case scenario, it got worse than that by this storm just stalling," Nungresser said. "So the levees can only take so much."

Nungresser said there were reports of up to 12 feet of water in some homes. "This is something I've never seen before," Nungresser said. "And I rode out Katrina."

[Slideshow: Hurricane Isaac pounds Gulf Coast]

He said three parish residents, including a woman on a roof, were saved by a private boat. Rescue workers were waiting for conditions to improve--and skies to lighten--before attempting other rescues.

"We're working with U.S. Coast Guard to rescue people stranded on top of levee," Nungresser said at a press conference.

The southern end of the parish was under a mandatory evacuation order, though it's not clear how many residents followed it.

"There are homes inundated and some folks trapped by water in those homes," Guy Laigast, director of homeland security for Plaquemines Parish, told the Weather Channel.

[Related: Hurricane Isaac as seen from space]

"Over 150 people have had to be rescued from #Isaac flooding," CNN's Rob Marciano tweeted. "The majority were within mandatory evacuation zones."

According to News Orleans' Times-Picayune, Jesse Schaffer and his son have been rescuing stranded residents with their boat.

"We've rescued at least 23 people including children," Jesse Shaffer Jr. said.

Meanwhile, more than 500,000 customers were left without power in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, utility companies said. According to the Associated Press, most of the outages are in areas around New Orleans.

A tornado warning has also been issued in southern Mississippi.

La. official: Levee will be breached amid flooding

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? A state official says the levee in southeast Louisiana's Isaac-flooded Plaquemines Parish will be breached to relieve pressure on it.

State Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority head Garret Graves says the levee won't be breached Wednesday because of weather conditions but it will happen as soon as they can get equipment to the site.

In hard-hit Plaquemines Parish, officials rescued dozens of people by boat after they became stranded by floodwaters. Flooding has plagued the area after Isaac sloshed ashore Tuesday evening as a Category 1 hurricane.

Looking For Advice On Dealing With Arthritis? Check Out These Tips!

Arthritis is very common and can cause stiffness, pain, and less mobility. It can cause pain in your hands, back, knee or hips and affect your ability to move. The following tips in this article will give some great advice for arthritis sufferers looking to manage their condition.

Relaxing is the best way to get rid of the fatigue associated with arthritis. You need to revitalize your body and soothe your mind with relaxing techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga and even a nice warm bath. Taking just a few moments to rest will help you keep moving all day.

If you are developing a home and you have arthritis, make necessary modifications. Make a list with the person that will be constructing your home. These modifications can make your home more accommodating to your specific needs and therefore might make life easier.

If your arthritis is causing you pain and swelling, you should cut back or quit smoking. Research has shown that non-smokers have less swollen joints and pain from arthritis than smokers do. If you are a smoker, try to stop to alleviate some of your symptoms. Your physician may give you prescription medication that can help you quit, if you haven?t been able to do so on your own.

When diagnosed with arthritis, it is essential that you practice healthy nutrition. You can improve your health and the effectiveness of your body by eating a well balanced diet, featuring fresh produce, beans and healthy oils. Feeling more energetic can increase the resources one has to devote to self-care skills including good nutrition and fitness, which will reduce symptoms over time.

Be sure to pay close attention to your diet. If you have arthritis, you may be allergic to food but not know it. Keep a ledger of what you consume, and take note of when your symptoms materialize. You might be able to determine its root cause.

If you are suffering from arthritis, only use pain medication if it is absolutely necessary. Pain killers simply mask the problem instead of solving it, and many of them can be addictive. If your doctor prescribes pain medication and you wish to use it, be sure to use them exactly as prescribed.

There are many ways that you can help to treat the joint inflammation caused by arthritis. You can use urtication for arthritis. It?s an ancient remedy that involves the use of nettles. It is worth a shot since it is all natural and can help with the symptoms and pain that you feel daily.

Those who are vegetarians tend to be less likely to wind up with arthritis. You do not have to forgo meat entirely but you should still try to include more greens in your diet. Peas and green beans are loaded with antioxidants, which can strengthen your joints. Don?t overlook other nutrients? enjoy these foods along with the rest of your balanced diet.

The toughest part of arthritis is definitely the pain that comes with this condition. It is possible to learn ways to deal with the pain and mitigate its impacts on your lifestyle. The first step in dealing with these issues is to know which type of arthritis that you have, since this helps determine your treatment options.

With your first symptoms of arthritis, make an appointment with your physician so you may begin immediate treatment. You can reduce the damage to your joints from arthritis by getting your start against the effects early. Take action immediately when you first receive the diagnosis. Talk to your doctor and get your treatment started.

To make it easier to cope with the discomfort and pain of arthritis, use the ideas in this article. While more help may be required, the advice in this article is the perfect place to start for anyone who wants to know more about arthritis and the available treatments.

Most Would Take Tax Increase to Save Social Security - Finance ...

Most Americans would rather take the necessary actions now, like raising taxes, to save Social Security benefits for future generations, according to a new AP-GfK poll.

The federal retirement program is facing serious long-term financial problems. Trustees warn Social Security will likely run out of money in 2033.

When given the choice of acting now or later on Social Security, 53 percent of responding adults said they would rather raise taxes now than risk benefits running out in the future.

"Right now, it seems like we're taxed so much, but if that would be the only way to go, I guess I'd have to be for it to preserve it," said Marge Youngs, a 77-year-old widow from Toledo, Ohio. "It's extremely important to me. It's most of my income."

Fifty-three percent of respondents also supported raising the retirement age now, if necessary. About 35 percent of the adults said they would prefer a cut in monthly benefits over raising the retirement age.

Millions of retiring baby boomers and fewer workers left to pay into Social Security is putting a strain on the system.

So far, the future of Social Security has not been an issue in this year's election.

When asked about the candidates' credibility on Social Security, 47 percent said they trust President Barack Obama to do a better job, and 44 percent said they trust Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

Taiwan braces for return of Typhoon Tembin

Taiwan warned Sunday that Typhoon Tembin was likely to return as people struggled to clear mud-filled homes after the storm pounded the south of the island with the heaviest rains in more than a century.

The storm appeared to be heading back towards Pingtung county where people were still reeling from the flooding sparked by Tembin when it swept across the southern tip of the island Friday.

Tembin weakened to a tropical storm after moving out to sea the same day but the Central Weather Bureau said it had intensified into a typhoon again Sunday.

"Tembin regained strength and became a typhoon again early this morning. It was moving east-southeasterly," the bureau said.

Although the typhoon was still hundreds of kilometres (miles) from the island, the bureau predicted downpours in the south and southeast and called on people there to take precautions.

On its current track, Tembin was forecast to make landfall again in Pingtung Tuesday morning and move northward off the east coast.

"The clean-up has yet been finished even though we've kept working the past three days. And now I heard the typhoon is coming back," the owner of a shop in Hengchun township, told the Sanli cable news network.

"This typhoon has destroyed much of my hard work over the past 20 years," he said, visibly upset, while other members of the family used mops to remove thick mud from the floor.

The storm's unusual movement was affected by Typhoon Bolaven which struck Japan's Okinawa on Sunday, about 800 kilometres (500 miles) east of Taiwan.

Tembin forced more than 8,000 people to evacuate their homes islandwide when the most torrential rain in more than a century struck Pingtung county.

Weather bureau data indicated Pingtung has received 724 millimetres (29 inches) of rain since Wednesday, while the township of Hengchun saw more than 600 millimetres of rainfall on Friday alone.

The defence ministry mobilised more than 2,000 soldiers to help people in that area clean up their homes.

Damage to the agriculture sector totalled Tw$168 million ($5.6 million), according to the Council of Agriculture Affairs.

As of 0930 GMT, Typhoon Tembin was around 400 kilometres southwest of the main southern city of Kaohsiung.

With a radius of 180 kilometres, the typhoon was packing gusts of up to 126 kilometres per hour and moving east-southeast at five kph.

The Obama 'Recovery' Worse Than the Bush Recession | Blue Crab ...

So says a non-partisan economic analysis written up in the Wall Street Journal:

In January 2009, the month President Obama entered the Oval Office and shortly before he signed his stimulus spending bill, median household income was $54,983. By June 2012, it had tumbled to $50,964, adjusted for inflation. (See the chart nearby.) That?s $4,019 in lost real income, a little less than a month?s income every year.

Unfair, you say, because Mr. Obama inherited a recession? Well, even if you start the analysis when the recession ended in June 2009, the numbers are dismal. Three years after the economy hit its trough, median household income is down $2,544, or nearly 5%.

Add the authors: ?The overall decline since June 2009 was larger than the 2.6 percent decline that occurred? during the recession from December 2007 to June 2009. For household income, in other words, the Obama recovery has been worse than the Bush recession.

One guy I?m working with right now is 70 years old. He?s on the road working to supplement his pension. Got that? He?s 70 and living in a hotel room away from his home and family ? because this economy is so bad.

The 0bama retirement plan: you?re retired when they screw the lid down.

You can drive around any town or city and see the signs ? the closed stores, the defunct businesses. My daughter is working part time ? by choice ? while going to school. But she could not go full time if she wanted or needed to. The store she works at, a major national chain, keeps most employees at less than full time employment. They are not stuck with paying benefits that way.

The 0bamacare economy ? employers dodging the hiring of full time employees.

This is the future ? it is here now.

    Unless we stop it.

S.Africa starts funerals of slain Lonmin workers

Grieving South Africans have started burying the 44 victims of the Lonmin platinum mine killings, with three funerals held on Saturday, one of them in the mining town of Marikana.

Hundreds of residents and workers attended the funeral of Papi Ledingoane, 24, at a cemetery in Marikana, according to local radio 702.

He was one of the 34 shot dead when police opened fire on hundreds of workers staging a pay protest on August 16 at Lonmin, the world's third largest producer of platinum.

Another 10 -- two of them policemen -- died in clashes between rival unions in the week before the nation's deadliest police action since the apartheid years.

Wearing white T-shirts, some of Ledingoane's workmates acted as pall bearers at the sombre funeral where grief-stricken relatives wept and some fainted.

Senior government officials including Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and the minister in President Jacob Zuma's office, Collins Chabane, joined the mourners.

Two other miners were buried in the Eastern Cape province, home to the majority of the victims, in the first of a series of funerals over the next few weeks.

About 3,000 rock drill operators at the Lonmin mine launched the illegal strike on August 10. It quickly degenerated into clashes with non-strikers.

In chilling scenes that evoked memories of apartheid brutality, police insist that they used teargas first and only opened fire after miners shot at them. The miners say they were armed only with spears, machetes and clubs.

Meanwhile platinum giant Lonmin reported that nearly 60 percent of workers reported for duty on Saturday at one of its two sets of shafts at Marikana as it sought an accord to end the labour dispute.

"Eastern Shafts are working this weekend and we have 57 percent attendance across these shafts. The rest of the mine is closed as this is their off-weekend," Lonmin said in a statement.

Lonmin said it would spend the weekend trying to persuade the remaining workers to return.

"It's quite good news that 57 percent of the workers in this section pitched up," spokeswoman Sue Vey told AFP.

On Friday, Lomnin reported only about 24 percent of its 28,000 work force at Marikana had signed in.

It said talks were ongoing to find a "common ground among all stakeholders."

"We continue to communicate with our employees to reassure them that we are all working together to bring resolution and we encourage them to come back to work," it added.

Workers are demanding a wage increase to 12,500 rand ($1,500, 1,200 euros), claiming they currently earn only 4,000 rand.

But according to figures released by Lonmin on Friday, when bonuses and other allowances are included, the rock drill operators who launched the strike earn an average of 9,813 rand before taxes.

On Friday Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant met with union representatives in Rustenburg, the main city in the platinum belt in the north of the country.

    (AP) ? Brace yourself, Harry.

A prominent British public relations guru said Friday he'd been approached by two women who claimed to have more material on Prince Harry, raising the possibility that the world may soon be seeing more compromising images of the British royal.

Earlier this week, celebrity gossip website TMZ published photos of Harry romping in the nude during a party at his Las Vegas hotel suite. Many Britons have laughed off the 27-year-old prince's hijinks, but questions have been raised about his publicly-funded security detail.

In a telephone interview, publicist Max Clifford said he had been called by two American women who claim they were in the prince's hotel room in the U.S. last week. Clifford, a savvy operator famous for negotiating kiss-and-tell interviews, said the women "said they had lots of interesting things: pictures, video, that kind of thing."

He said he turned them down.

"I couldn't justify this," he said. "It's an infringement of his privacy. That's why I said no."

On Thursday, TMZ claimed that "several girls" had taken pictures at the party using their cellphones as the party got started and that "more photos were taken" after the clothes came off. Neither TMZ nor Clifford has made clear whether they believe the unreleased photographs show the prince in the nude.

British publications have largely steered clear of the photographs, with the prominent exception of Rupert Murdoch's The Sun tabloid, which became the first paper to splash the pictures across its front page on Friday with the words: "HEIR IT IS!" and marketing the grainy photograph as a "souvenir printed edition."

Britain's Press Complaints Commission said it has received more than 850 complaints about the naked pictures in the tabloid, mostly from members of the public. Nearly all of the complaints are about invasion of privacy and will be investigated, the commission added.

The paper said it had defied the wishes of the royal family because there was a public interest in knowing what the prince, who represented the queen at the 2012 Olympic Games and is heavily involved in charity work, got up to while abroad.

Privacy lawyer Chris Hutchings, a partner at Hamlins LLP, said the paper's public interest argument could have traction.

"The public interest argument is on the basis that Prince Harry represents this country around the world and the photos bring into question his suitability to act as a British ambassador," Hutchings said, although he added: "The Sun have taken a calculated risk in publishing the photos given their inherently private nature."

Royal officials said they had no further comment on the matter after previously saying that it was down to the editors of Britain's newspapers to decide whether they printed the controversial pictures.

As of Friday, the palace hasn't made any official complaint.

Jury Orders Samsung to Pay Apple $1 Billion For Infringing Patents ...

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

The jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $1.05 billion. An appeal is expected.

Apple Inc. filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged legions of the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.

But the day belonged to Apple as the jury rejected all Samsung's claims against Apple. The jury did reject some of Apple's claims against the two dozen Samsung devices at issue, declining to award the $2.5 billion Apple demanded.

However, the jury found that several of Samsung's products illegally used such Apple creations as the "bounce-back" feature and the ability to zoom text with a finger tap.

During closing arguments, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung's lawyers countered that it was simply and legally giving consumers what they want: Smart phones with big screens. They said Samsung didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further alleged innovations claimed by Apple were actually created by other companies.

Samsung has emerged as one of Apple's biggest rivals and has overtaken Apple as the leading smartphone maker.

Samsung's Galaxy line of phones run on Android, a mobile operating system that Google Inc. has given out for free to Samsung and other phone makers.

Samsung conceded that Apple makes great products but said it doesn't have a monopoly on the design of rectangle phones with rounded corners that it claimed it created.

The trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to settle the dispute out of court.

Deliberations by the jury of seven men and two women began Wednesday.

Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.

Apple and Samsung combined account for more than half of global smartphone sales.

As part of its lawsuit, Apple also demanded that Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market.

From the beginning, legal experts and Wall Street analysts viewed Samsung as the underdog in the case. Apple's headquarters is a mere 10 miles from the courthouse, and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley where Apple's late founder Steve Jobs is a revered technological pioneer.

While the legal and technological issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak previously said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believe Samsung's products look and feel almost identical to Apple's iPhone and iPad.

To overcome that challenge at trial, Samsung's lawyers argued that many of Apple's claims of innovation were either obvious concepts or ideas stolen from Sony Corp. and others. Experts called that line of argument a high-risk strategy because of Apple's reputation as an innovator.

Apple's lawyers argued there is almost no difference between Samsung products and those of Apple, and presented internal Samsung documents they said showed it copied Apple designs. Samsung lawyers insisted that several other companies and inventors had previously developed much of the Apple technology at issue.

The U.S. trial is just the latest skirmish between the two tech giants over product designs. Previous legal battles were fought in Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The U.S. case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for smartphones and computer tablets.

Samsung won a home court ruling Friday in the global patent battle against Apple.

Judges in Seoul said Samsung didn't copy the look and feel of the iPhone and ruled that Apple infringed on Samsung's wireless technology.

However, the judges also said Samsung violated Apple's technology behind the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. Both sides were ordered to pay limited damages.

Update: We spoke to David Bailey, a partner at the intellectual property law firm KPPB in Anaheim. Bailey said that it's possible the judge could increase the damages by up to a factor of three, to $3 billion, because the jury found Samsung's infringement was willful.

But Bailey also said that even that number would still be well within the ability of Samsung to absorb. He also said that Samsung is a critical supplier to Apple in the manufacturer of the iPhone, so "at the end of the day, these two companies need to be able to work together for Apple to continue producing its products," meaning there is considerable motivation for both companies to settle.

Furthermore, Bailey said, most of the Samsung products at issue are "very old products that are no longer being sold by Samsung anyway." Bailey said he thought many of the patent-infringing elements of those products had been eliminated in redesigns.

In light of all that, we asked him why this case was considered to be so important.

"The case is certainly high profile and has attracted a great deal of attention, I think because the iPhone has been such an iconic product that revolutionized the smartphone market," he said. "But the reality is, is that both companies are well beyond the life cycles of the products that are the subjects of these disputes. And an argument can be made that this case is not as important as its being made out in the media. It's more a validation of the level of innovation that Apple brought to bear on the creation of the first iPhone."

Update 2: Another opinion, from Mark Lemley, who teaches at Stanford Law School and specializes in intellectual property law. He says the verdict's real damage to Samsung will come if Judge Koh grants an injunction blocking sale of Samsung products that infringe on Apple patents.

"There's already a preliminary injunction in place," Lemley says, "and my guess is that will continue. But at some point, Judge Koh is going to sit down and grant a permanent injunction against the products that have been found to infringe, and it may cover not just the Samsung products at issue in this case, which are older versions of some of their phones and tablets, but it may prevent Samsung from including some of these design elements and features even in their future products."

Facebook co-founder Moskovitz sold stock post lockup

    Sat Aug 25, 2012 2:39am BST

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc co-founder Dustin Moskovitz sold 450,000 Class A shares over the past three days, his second such sale since last Friday, becoming the latest insider to sell shares following the end of the lockup, according to a regulatory filing late on Friday evening.

Moskovitz, who was Facebook's first chief technology officer, sold the shares in three batches of 150,000 shares each beginning on Wednesday, raising more than $8.7 million.

A regulatory filing from Tuesday shows a similar 450,000 share sale in three batches beginning last Friday through Tuesday, raising a little over $8.83 million.

Earlier this week, Facebook director Peter Thiel sold roughly $400 million worth of shares in the company, as investors look to cash out their stake after the end of the first lockup, which barred early investors and insiders from selling shares following the initial public offering.

Moskovitz, a onetime Harvard roommate of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, had been with the company since its earliest days and left in 2008 to form a social-networking company for business called Asana.

Moskovitz still owns 6.6 million Facebook Class A shares and 126.2 million Class B shares, according to the filing.

More than 1.4 billion additional shares held by early investors and Facebook employees are set to become available for trading by year's end, as additional post-IPO lockup restrictions are lifted.

Facebook shares closed at $19.41 on Friday on the Nasdaq, down 3 cents.

Iran leader calls for 'economy of resistance'

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told the government Thursday to adopt an "economy of resistance" to confront crippling sanctions slapped by the West on Tehran over its nuclear drive.

"The arrogant powers are pulling their weight to force Iran to back down (on its stances) and the government should invalidate these illusions by using the nation's full potentials," Khamenei said.

He called for an "economy of resistance" to confront a slew of Western oil and financial sanctions, saying this "is the only way to pursue progress in the country."

"In this kind of economy the nation's progress is preserved and vulnerability of the economy against the enemies plots is decreased," Khamenei said during a meeting with cabinet members and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

During his speech Khamenei did not specifically mentioned sanctions nor Iran's controversial nuclear drive.

But his comments comes as several Iranian officials, who had long minimised the effect on the sanctions, acknowledged in recent weeks that the punitive measures have had a negative impact on the country's economy.

Severe banking sanctions imposed on Iran since 2010 have slowed industrial activity, reduced foreign investment, soared inflation to more than 20 percent and led to a shortage of foreign currency.

The situation has been aggravated in recent weeks with an oil embargo that so far has caused Iranian oil exports -- which provide the country with most of its foreign exchange resources -- to drop by around 50 percent.

The embargo also caused a sharp decline in Iranian oil production, which has fallen to its lowest level in the past 20 years.

Ayatollah Ahmad Janati, the hardline chief of the influential Guardians Council tasked with overseeing elections in the Islamic republic and interpreting the constitution, said earlier this month that the economy is being hit by "war", insisting that Iran must mobilise all its forces to tackle the problem.

And in July, Ahmadinejad acknowledged the magnitude of the impact of the oil embargo saying that Iran must reduce its dependence on oil exports.

The US sanctions, and others imposed by the European Union, aim to pressure Tehran to roll back its nuclear activities, which the West fears are geared to developing atomic weapons. Iran denies its programme is anything but peaceful.

But Iranian leaders have always ruled out yielding to pressure or renouncing their nuclear programme despite worries by the international community.

C?ine Dion Poses Topless for V Magazine ? Zoomer Magazine ...

    Thursday, August 23, 2012

Soon to be a Zoomer, C?line Dion, 44, let her hair down for an edgy photo shoot with V magazine this month, revealing a side of herself that is not often shown to the public while posing topless in her Florida home. Dion looks at ease and confident in front of the camera, which supports our theory that self-assurance only grows stronger with age.

In the interview, Dion expresses her love for singer Adele, for her career and the role she is most serious about: motherhood, saying, ?I thought I had a life before, but until I was a mom, I had no idea. I?m more grounded now than ever before.? And ?There is nothing I can hope and wish for my career: I can just hope to be blessed as a mother for the rest of my life the way I am now. That?s the only nomination I want.?

(AP) ? President Barack Obama accused rival Mitt Romney of being oblivious to the burdens of paying for college on Tuesday, telling young voters in battleground Ohio that his opponent's education policies amount to nothing more than encouraging them to tap their parents for money or "shop around" for the best deal.

"That's his plan. That's his answer to young people who are trying to figure out how to go to college and make sure that they don't have a mountain of debt," Obama said at Capital University in Columbus. "Not everybody has parents who have the money to lend. That may be news to some folks."

Turning to young voters, a key part of his 2008 coalition, the president sought to draw a bright line with Romney on education policy in his latest attempt to meld Romney with the House Republican budget blueprint offered Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate.

Obama and Romney remain locked in a tight presidential campaign a week before the former Massachusetts governor formally claims his party's nomination at the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. Both campaigns have broadened their message to voters in recent weeks beyond the economy, which remains the most pivotal issue for voters less than three months before the election.

Romney sought to distance himself from Missouri GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin, who apologized after saying in an interview that women's bodies are sometimes able to prevent pregnancies after what he called "a legitimate rape." Romney said in a statement that fellow Missouri Republicans had urged Akin to quit and "I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race."

Romney was raising money to bolster his campaign in Texas, where he told donors that his campaign was "a little wiser in our spending of dollars" than Obama's campaign, pointing to new finance documents released by Obama's campaign on Monday that showed it spent more money in July than it brought in.

Romney and Republicans have outraised Obama and Democrats for the past three months, a sign of broad GOP interest in defeating the incumbent president.

"I'm not managing their campaign for them, but we're going to spend our money wiser," Romney said in Houston, where he was expected to pull in more than $6 million. "We're going to spend it to win."

In a nod to oil-rich Texas, Romney told donors he planned to announce a "comprehensive energy plan" during a stop in New Mexico later this week but offered few details beyond a focus in part on fossil-based fuels. Romney said his aim was to "fully take advantage of our energy resources."

Romney's campaign countered the president's education critique, saying college costs had skyrocketed under Obama's watch and his economic policies had made it difficult for recent college graduates to find work. Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said Obama's policies were "just more of the same from a president who hasn't fixed the economy or kept his promises to the young people who supported him four years ago."

Obama's line of criticism dovetailed with his campaign's unrelenting effort to cast Romney as out of touch, playing off his wealth and his background in private equity. Ryan, meanwhile, sought to reassure voters about his and Romney's stance on Medicare and sustained the GOP's efforts to cast Obama as a divisive figure.

Ryan tried to blunt criticism of his plan to overhaul Medicare, saying his plan would protect the program for seniors' grandchildren.

"You're going to hear a whole lot of distortions because that's all he has to offer," Ryan told a rally in the hull of Beaver Steel near Pittsburgh. He reminded voters in western Pennsylvania of a comment Obama made during the 2008 campaign, saying some voters in small towns "cling to guns or religion."

"I'm a Catholic deer hunter. I'm happy to be clinging to my guns and my religion," said Ryan, who walked on stage swinging a black-and-gold Pittsburgh Steelers Terrible Towel, a nod to the popular hometown football team.

Democrats have tried to use Ryan's budget proposal to undermine Romney's pitch to blue-collar voters, and Obama's appeal on higher education was no different.

Democrats contend that Ryan's budget proposal, which failed to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate, would cut $115 billion from the Education Department, costing 1 million college students their Pell Grants over the next decade. Democrats argue those moves would punish many middle class and low income families trying to gain an education.

Those estimates, however, assume the cuts in Ryan's budget are applied evenly across all programs starting in 2014 ? something Ryan aides say would not happen. His budget does not directly address Pell Grant funding, and his aides say the cuts would not take a one-size-fits-all approach.

Ryan, who prefers that students take loans instead of receiving grants, would keep the top Pell Grant award in the coming school year at $5,500 but in future years reduce the number of students eligible, not the award sums. In other words, fewer students would receive them but the neediest would not see their awards changed.

More than 9.7 million students are expected to get grants for the academic year that is about to begin.

Following a lunchtime stop at Sloopy's, a diner at nearby Ohio State University, Obama made a personal pitch to college students at nearby Capital University, recalling that he and first lady Michelle Obama had to dig out of a "mountain of debt" after finishing law school.

He pointed to Romney's remarks on higher education at a Youngstown, Ohio, town hall meeting in March, when the GOP candidate suggested that college students would do better to "shop around" for tuition rates and college loans or borrow money from parents.

"He doesn't think investing in your future is worth it," Obama said. The president was campaigning later in the day at a community college in Reno, Nev., another important state to his re-election map.

Obama's pitch is aimed squarely at young voters who overwhelmingly favored him in 2008, along with their parents. The president continues to enjoy a sizable lead in polls among young voters, but not as wide as four years ago. Their parents are less convinced, and they are as much Obama's audience as their children.

In Minneapolis, Vice President Joe Biden also tried to portray Romney as unsympathetic to the concerns of many middle-income Americans, reprising the campaign's request that Romney release more extensive tax returns.

"I've never run across a presidential candidate who is a decent guy but is more out of touch than Mr. Romney right now," Biden said. Citing the Obama administration's efforts to reform Wall Street, Biden said the objections of Republican critics sounded like "squealing pigs" and called the changes "some of the toughest Wall Street regulations in history."
