Should Architects Boycott Building "Supermax" Prisons?

Should Architects Boycott Building "Supermax" Prisons?

There?s no question that solitary confinement?the nebulous, undefined, and largely undocumented practice that Amnesty International, the NYCLU, and the UN call torture?can cause horrific psychological damage to prisoners. But are the architects who build these structures responsible for them?

Marlins-Mets go 20 innings, Texas-Blue Jays go 18

A bunch of big leaguers became marathon men on Saturday.

The Miami Marlins needed 20 innings to outlast the New York Mets 2-1, overlapping for much of the afternoon and early evening with the Toronto Blue Jays' 4-3 win against the Texas Rangers in 18 innings.

It was the first time two games in the majors on the same day lasted that long since Aug. 15, 2006, when the matchups of Cubs-Astros and Diamondbacks-Rockies each went 18 innings, STATS said.

The Marlins and Mets played the longest major league game in more than three years. They threw a combined 561 pitches and took 6 hours, 25 minutes in New York.

The Rangers and Blue Jays needed 5 hours, 28 minutes in Toronto. They each equaled the longest game in club history.

Texas played 18 innings for the fifth time in its history, last doing it on June 24, 2004, with a 9-7 win over Seattle.

Toronto had played 18 innings once before, beating the Angels on July 28, 2005. Texas reliever Jason Frasor pitched one inning for the Blue Jays that day ? he also worked an inning for the Rangers in this extended affair.

Frasor said these long games are mentally draining for relievers, as well as position players.

"If you're sitting down in the bullpen, it's just the anticipation, the preparation, it just exhausts you," Frasor said. "You're going, 'Is this going to be me, is this going to me be?' and then it's not you. You just keep waiting and waiting and it's exhausting."

Probably the same thing for Rob Brantly of the Marlins and John Buck of the Mets ? both catchers played the whole way. Adeiny Hechavarria hit a go-ahead single for Miami in the 20th.

The game began 5? hours before the Belmont Stakes about 13 miles away ? and still ended around an hour after winner Palace Malice crossed the finish line.

The last big league game to last as long also involved the Mets, according to STATS. It came when they beat St. Louis 2-1 in 20 innings on April 17, 2010.

It was the longest game by far in the history of Citi Field, which opened in 2009, and it matched the longest in Marlins history ? a 7-6 loss to the Cardinals in 20 innings on April 27, 2003.

A scattered crowd of 20,338 had dwindled perhaps into the hundreds by the time the stadium sound system played Chuck Berry's "No Particular Place To Go," not long after the 14th-inning stretch.

Some of the fans who remained chanted "Let's Go Home!" as the Mets came to bat in the 17th.

Swedish male train drivers wear skirts to work

(AP) ? Commuters on a train line in northern Stockholm were met with an unusual sight this week: male train drivers and conductors wearing skirts to work.

Train driver Martin Akersten says he and more than a dozen others at the Roslagsbanan line have started wearing skirts in the summer as a protest against the train company's uniform policy, which doesn't allow shorts.

The 30-year-old Akersten said Sunday the response from customers has been only positive.

Arriva, the company that runs the train line, hasn't stopped the drivers. Arriva spokesman Tomas Hedenius says the company wants its staff to look "nice and proper," but can't stop men from wearing "women's clothes" if that's what they want because it would be discrimination.

He didn't rule out a change of the company's uniform policy.

Obama pressed Chinese leader on cybersecurity

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) ? President Barack Obama used an unusually lengthy and informal desert summit to present Chinese President Xi Jinping with detailed evidence of intellectual property theft emanating from his country, as a top U.S. official declared Saturday that cybersecurity is now at the "center of the relationship" between the world's largest economies.

While there were few clear policy breakthroughs on cybersecurity, U.S. officials said Obama and Xi were in broad agreement over the need for North Korea to be denuclearized. And both countries expressed optimism that the closer personal ties forged between the two leaders during the California summit could stem the mistrust between the world powers.

Still, Obama's national security adviser Tom Donilon said resolving cybersecurity issues would be "key to the future" of the relationship.

Obama told Xi that "if it's not addressed, if it continues to be this direct theft of United States property, that this was going to be very difficult problem in the economic relationship and was going to be an inhibitor to the relationship really reaching its full potential," Donilon said during a briefing with reporters following the summit.

In their own recap of the meetings, Chinese officials said Xi opposed all forms of cyberspying, but claimed no responsibility for attacks against the U.S.

"Cybersecurity should not become the root cause of mutual suspicion and frictions between our two countries. Rather, it should be a new bright spot in our cooperation," said Yang Jiechi, Xi's senior foreign policy adviser.

Yang said the two leaders "blazed a new trail" away from the two nations' past differences and "talked about cooperation and did not shy away from differences."

Obama and Xi met for about eight hours over the course of two days at the sweeping Sunnylands estate, marking a significant and unusual investment of time for both presidents. Their talks included a working dinner of lobster tamales, Porterhouse steak and cherry pie prepared by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, and a morning walk through the manicured gardens of the 200-acre estate on the edge of the Mojave Desert.

During their walk, the leaders stopped to sit on a custom-designed park bench made of California redwood that Obama presented to Xi as a gift.

The U.S. president told reporters that the talks were "terrific" as he and Xi walked side by side, both having ditched jackets and ties in a nod to the summit's informal atmosphere. The leaders closed the summit in low-key style, with no formal statements to the press, just a private tea with Xi's wife.

Obama and Xi did take a significant step toward tackling climate change, announcing that their countries had agreed for the first time to partner on reducing hydrofluorocarbons, a potent greenhouse gas used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and industrial applications.

The discussions on North Korea also proved promising, Donilon said, with the leaders agreeing that North Korea has to be denuclearized and that neither country will accept the North as a nuclear-armed state. North Korea is estimated to have a handful of crude nuclear devices, with some analysts putting its arsenal at four to eight plutonium bombs.

While China is Pyongyang's strongest ally and economic benefactor, Xi has signaled a growing impatience with North Korea's unpredictable and provocative nuclear threats.

"China has taken a number of steps in recent months to send a clear message to North Korea, including though enhanced enforcement of sanctions and through public statements by the senior leadership in China," Donilon said.

U.S. officials are hoping that Xi, who took office in March, proves to be a new brand of Chinese leader. He has deeper ties to the U.S. than his predecessors, given that he lived in Iowa briefly as a visiting official and sent his daughter to college in the U.S.

The two leaders appear to have more in common than Obama had with former Chinese leader Hu Jintao, who often appeared stiff and formal in meetings. Both men are in their 50s and share a love of sports: swimming and soccer on Xi's side, basketball and golf on Obama's. Both are also married to glamorous, high-profile wives who have played a strong role in shaping their images.

While Xi's wife accompanied him to California, Michelle Obama stayed in Washington. The White House said late Saturday that she wrote Xi's wife a letter welcoming her to the United States and expressing regret for not seeing her this weekend.

Xi also appeared to relish in the more informal talks. An Obama administration official said he discussed at length growing up in the Chinese countryside during his country's cultural revolution and how the experience impacted his perspective on China's development. Xi also broke out a bottle of "Maotai," a famous Chinese liquor, to toast Obama during Friday's working dinner, according to the official, who insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the private meetings.

The two leaders will likely meet again in September, on the sidelines of an international economic summit in Russia. Xi also invited Obama to travel to China soon for a similarly informal round of one-on-one talks.

For Obama, the China summit marked the start of a heavy foreign policy-focused stretch that includes trips later this month to Europe and Africa. But domestic controversies are competing for his attention, including revelations that the National Security Agency has been secretly collecting massive amounts of data from U.S. phone and Internet companies.

The president sought to distinguish between the NSA actions and China's alleged cyber intrusions, saying the two issues were separate and distinct. During a news conference with Xi on Friday night, Obama said he welcomed a debate on those differences.

During the question-and-answer session with reporters, Obama and Xi carefully avoided directly accusing each other's nations of high-tech intrusions, though they acknowledged an urgent need to find a common approach on addressing the matter.

Obama said rapid cyber advances meant the two countries were in "uncharted waters."

"We don't have the kind of protocols that have governed military issues and arms issues, where nations have a lot of experience in trying to negotiate what's acceptable and what's not," Obama said.

Xi, who called rapid technological advancements a "double-edged sword," claimed no responsibility for China's alleged cyberespionage. He said China was also a victim of cyberspying but did not assign any blame.

While Xi departed California Saturday afternoon, Obama planned to stay in California through the weekend, though he had no public events planned.

Iranian candidates quarrel over nuclear talks

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's eight presidential candidates quarreled about talks with world powers over the country's disputed nuclear program Friday as they held their final televised debate ahead of next week's election.

Iran's president does not have control of central issues like nuclear development policy but does generally enjoy a close relationship with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that can prove influential. The issue also has come to the fore as the Islamic Republic's ailing economy has emerged as a major focus of campaigning ahead of the June 14 vote.

Iran is suffering from 30 percent inflation and 14 percent unemployment. Western oil and banking sanctions over its refusal to stop uranium enrichment have deeply cut its revenues. The U.S. and its allies fear that Iran may be aiming to develop a nuclear weapon, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran was referred to the U.N. Security Council after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to power in 2005 with a bombastic style and hard-line platform.

Iran's former nuclear negotiator, the centrist Hasan Rowhani, suggested a more conciliatory stance at the negotiating table.

"We should look broadly. Once people live under economic hardships, their dignity is undermined. It's very good to see (nuclear) centrifuges rotating but only when people could make ends meet, when factories and industry could run smoothly," he said. "All our problems (under Ahmadinejad) are because all efforts were not made to prevent the (nuclear) dossier from being sent to the Security Council."

Most of the sanctions, leveled for Iran's refusal to stop uranium enrichment, have been imposed during the tenure of Iran's main nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, who also is running for president.

Jalili, a Khamenei loyalist and the most hard-line of the eight candidates, accused Rowhani of appeasing the West, attacking his record as chief negotiator and saying he temporarily shut down the country's program a decade ago out of fear.

"Rowhani says in his book . that Iran received little, (Europeans) didn't keep their promise and instead came forward with more demands," he said.

Iran temporarily suspended uranium enrichment in 2003 as a confidence building measure to dispel suspicions that it was seeking a nuclear weapon. However, it resumed nuclear activities after three European countries ? Britain, France and Germany ? demanded the permanent shutdown of the enrichment program.

Independent conservative candidate Mohsen Rezaei, a former commander of the country's Revolutionary Guards, said Rowhani's and Jalili's positions were both extreme in their own right.

He accused the U.S. and its allies of avoiding meaningful talks in the hopes that sanctions will force Tehran into making concessions. As a solution, he proposed shoring up the country's flagging economy to boost Iran's negotiating position.

"The nuclear talks should come to a conclusion more quickly," he said. "The West is buying time so that the sanctions hit the economy more seriously... We should prove we have a competent economy that renders sanctions ineffective. The economy is the way to get out of the deadlocked talks. When it's proved that sanctions are ineffective, then the Americans will come to the negotiating table."

Another Khamenei loyalist, Ali Akbar Velayati, said Iran should seek to ease the sanctions while preserving its nuclear program.

"We should insist on our right to uranium enrichment and lead the country wisely so that we avoid estrangement from other countries at the same time," he said.

(AP) ? The rival Koreas are trading counterproposals over the venue for possible talks Sunday meant to mend abysmal ties.

South Korea said Friday it wants to meet in a truce village that straddles the heavily armed border between the countries. Pyongyang said hours earlier it favors its border city of Kaesong.

Two officials with Seoul's Unification Ministry said Seoul made the latest proposal through a newly reopened cross-border Red Cross communications line. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office policy.

Pyongyang has yet to respond to the offer.

The Red Cross line in the truce village of Panmunjom was shut amid rising animosity between the Koreas this spring. Its reopening Friday signals easing tensions.

Before proposing Panmunjom for talks, South Korea had suggested high-level negotiations Wednesday in Seoul.

Things To Do In Philadelphia For Free

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The City of Brotherly Love is perhaps best known for its Colonial roots but locals will tell you there's much more to explore in this city of 1.5 million people. Options abound for travelers looking for free things to do in and around the historic district and beyond ? and they don't all involve tri-corner hats and Betsy Ross' flag.

It's a short walk from the city's most popular tourist attractions to several Philadelphia neighborhoods and shopping districts, which abound with shops and galleries that provide plenty of eye candy for browsers and window shoppers even without opening your wallet. Farther afield is the city's prestigious art museum, which boasts glorious views from its famous steps. Free options for the outdoorsy include a lush wildlife refuge south of the city as well as Fairmount Park, a 4,100-acre (1,660-hectare) jewel of trails, streams, historic buildings and public art.

INDEPENDENCE SPIRIT

Two of the city's busiest tourist stops, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, are free to visit and located directly across the street from each other. Both are part of Independence National Historical Park, which is managed by the National Park Service. Getting into Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed, requires a timed ticket because of crowds. Walk-up tickets are available at the adjacent visitors' center starting at 8:30 a.m. ? visitors should arrive early for the best choice of times, as tickets for the day are often gone by 1 p.m. during the busy summer tourist season. No tickets are required for the Liberty Bell, but expect to wait in line to get inside the building where it resides.

RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY

In the middle of the Old City neighborhood's cool art galleries, vintage furniture stores and trendy clothing boutiques is a charming cobblestone lane that has barely changed in 200 years: Elfreth's Alley, often called the oldest continuously inhabited street in America. It was built for carts traveling to the nearby Delaware River waterfront and named for Jeremiah Elfreth, an 18th-century blacksmith who built and rented out several homes there. The alley's 32 surviving row houses were built between roughly 1724 and 1836. Unlike the nearby Society Hill mansions built for the city's upper crust, the humble homes of Elfreth's Alley were inhabited by laborers, shipwrights and craftsmen. Many of the homes remain privately owned but the narrow street is a good place for a peaceful stroll and some snapshots in front of the charming red-brick homes with colorful flowerboxes and brightly painted shutters.

GARDEN OF GLASS

"Dream Garden," a jaw-dropping glass mosaic, is close to the historic district but easy to miss unless you know it's there. The magical scene was created with more than 100,000 pieces of iridescent glass by the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany and was based on a painting by Philadelphia native Maxfield Parrish. The 15-by-49-foot (4.5-by-15-meter) mosaic was commissioned by "Saturday Evening Post" publishing magnate Cyrus Curtis and installed in 1916 inside the lobby of his majestic headquarters fronting Washington Square Park. A public uproar ensued when casino magnate Steve Wynn in 1998 announced his plan to buy the mosaic and move it to Las Vegas, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts purchased the work to guarantee it will forever remain in its intended home. The cool, quiet marble lobby serves as a respite from the Independence Mall crowds and has benches for visitors to relax and feast their eyes on "Dream Garden."

ROCKY'S ROAD

Make like Philly's fictional prizefighter Rocky Balboa and bound up the Philadelphia Museum of Art's 72 stone steps, then spend a few minutes taking in in the picture-postcard skyline view down the tree-lined Benjamin Franklin Parkway. A sculpture of the Italian Stallion, arms raised in victory, at the base of the stairs is a popular spot for photo ops. Lots of "Rocky" runners never go inside the renowned art museum after their sprint up the steps ? if you do, it'll cost you $20 for an adult general admission ticket. There is some art to be seen free of charge, however, in a large outdoor sculpture garden featuring works by artists including Sol LeWitt, Claes Oldenburg and Ellsworth Kelly.

SOMETHING WILD

John Heinz Wildlife Refuge is a thousand-acre (400-hectare) oasis located just one mile (1.6 kilometers) from the bustle and noise of Philadelphia International Airport. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge is free and open from sunrise to sunset year-round. Birdwatchers have documented more than 300 species of birds at the verdant refuge, a stopover for migratory species due to its location along the Atlantic Flyway, and it's one of the only places where locally endangered species of turtles and frogs still live. There are trails for hiking and biking, and self-directed and guided tours are available. The largest remaining freshwater tidal wetland in Pennsylvania, Tinicum Marsh was renamed in 1991 to honor the late senator who helped preserve the site from plans that would have put a landfill and part of Interstate 95 through the refuge.

Large-scale biodiversity is vital to maintain ecosystem health

June 7, 2013 ? Over the years ecologists have shown how biological diversity benefits the health of small, natural communities. New analysis by ecologists at UC Santa Cruz demonstrates that even higher levels of biological diversity are necessary to maintain ecosystem health in larger landscapes over long periods of time.

Think of it as patches on a quilt, says Erika Zavaleta, UCSC associate professor of environmental studies. Each patch may be a diverse habitat of plants, animals, and insects but it is equally important that the landscape "quilt" is made up of a diversity of patches that are different from each other.

"A mix of meadows, young forest, old forest and shrub lands, for example, might provide more benefits than a landscape of continuous young forest, even if that young forest itself has high biodiversity," Zavaleta said.

Zavaleta and two ecologists who recently received Ph.D.s from UCSC illustrate the importance of landscape diversity in their article "Several scales of bioversity affect ecosystem multifunctionality" published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Lead author Jae R. Pasari, who received his Ph.D. in 2011, conceived of the study for his dissertation. He, Zavaleta, and coauthor Taal Levi created simulations based on landmark research conducted by David Tilman, professor of ecology, evolution, and behavior at the University of Minnesota.

Tilman -- also a co-author -- created 168 plots nine meters square and planted them with randomized combinations of perennial grassland species. He was interested in how the plots would fare depending on the combination of species included.

Pasari, Levi, and Zavaleta took Tilman's data gathered since 1997 to create 7,512 experimental computerized landscapes. The computer simulations are grounded on very real data, Zavaleta said.

"We used the simulation models to create imaginary landscapes with many kinds of habitats," she said. The team was able to test combinations of "patches" in order to determine the overall potential health of the "quilt."

The authors write: "In addition to conserving important species, maintaining ecosystem multifunctionality will require diverse landscape mosaics of diverse communities."

"What's new here," Zavaleta says, "is reminding us that it's not just important to protect a diversity of species but also important to protect the mosaic of habitat patches in a landscape."

Conservation often emphasizes restoring land that has been mined, logged, or tilled, she said. Equally important is to recognize the role that restored landscape plays in a larger biotic community.

Pasari now teaches at Berkeley City College and at Pacific Collegiate School in Santa Cruz. Levi received his Ph.D. last year and is a wildlife ecologist at the Cary Institute of Ecosystems Studies in New York. Both were supported in their research with National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships.

Daily Kos: Student debt: Just one more way the economy is stacked ...

It's well known that student loan debt has gone up astronomically in recent years?and as the graph above makes clear, it's increasing in ways that other kinds of debt aren't. The cause is not just recession, in other words.

Well, too many people are paying extortionate for-profit college tuition, and tuition is rising at public and non-profit private colleges as well. There are a lot of reasons for that?for one, per-student public higher education funding has fallen dramatically; for another, colleges have become increasingly top-heavy, with more administrators paid more money. The end effect is that, once again, lower-income people are screwed. A college degree is increasingly necessary to earn a middle-class income, but if you're not already middle class, the price is long-term debt:

As a result, student debt?incurred partly because of declining per-student public higher education funding?becomes something that locks people into whatever crappy jobs are on offer, creating an incentive not to fight back against abusive employers. And the truth is, while there are several plans that would make the situation a little better for many or a lot better for some by adjusting interest rates, we need a bigger solution. If a college degree is a near-requirement of successful participation in the current economy, paying for it can't be luxury for the wealthy and a lifetime burden for everyone else. We need much, much greater investment in public higher education.

Nontoxic cancer therapy proves effective against metastatic cancer

June 5, 2013 ? A combination of nontoxic dietary and hyperbaric oxygen therapies effectively increased survival time in a mouse model of aggressive metastatic cancer, a research team from the Hyperbaric Biomedical Research Laboratory at the University of South Florida has found.

The study, "The Ketogenic Diet and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Prolong Survival in Mice with Systemic Metastatic Cancer," was published online today in PLOS ONE.

Led by Dominic D'Agostino, PhD, principal investigator in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, the research shows the effects of combining two nontoxic adjuvant cancer therapies, the ketogenic diet and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in a mouse model of late-stage, metastatic cancer.

"Our study demonstrates the potential of these cost-effective, nontoxic therapies to contribute to current cancer treatment regimens and significantly improve the outcome of patients with advanced metastatic cancer," D'Agostino said.

Metastasis, the spreading of cancer from the primary tumor to distant spots, is responsible for over 90 percent of cancer-related deaths in humans. A lack of available therapies effective against metastatic disease remains the largest obstacle in finding a cure for cancer.

In the study, mice with advanced metastatic cancer were fed either a standard high carbohydrate diet or carbohydrate-restricted ketogenic diet. Mice on both diets also received hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which uses a special chamber to increase the amount of oxygen in the tissues.

The ketogenic diet forces a physiological shift in substrate utilization from glucose to fatty acids and ketone bodies for energy. Normal healthy cells readily adapt to using ketone bodies for fuel, but cancer cells lack this metabolic flexibility, and thus become selectively vulnerable to reduced glucose availability. Solid tumors also have areas of low oxygen, which promotes tumor growth and metastatic spread.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100 percent oxygen at elevated barometric pressure, saturating the tumors with oxygen. When administered properly, both the ketogenic diet and hyperbaric oxygen therapy are non-toxic and may even protect healthy tissues while simultaneously damaging cancer cells, D'Agostino said.

While both therapies slowed disease progression independently, animals receiving the combined ketogenic diet and hyperbaric oxygen therapy lived 78 percent longer than mice fed a standard high-carbohydrate diet.

The research, funded by a charitable donation from Scivation, was inspired by the research of Professor Thomas Seyfried of Boston College. Dr. Seyfried has advanced the theory that cancer is a metabolic disease, inspiring the development of metabolic strategies to treat and prevent cancer.

97% Before Midnight

All Critics (75) | Top Critics (26) | Fresh (72) | Rotten (2)

This one is a slowly evolving quarrel between two people who know each other inside out, delivered with the same intelligence and discernment but, as you might imagine, something of a cold shower.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are both fine actors, but you'd be hard pressed to sit engrossed in a conversation between any actors that goes on for more than a couple of minutes. Usually. But not here.

Linklater and his actors expose small fissures with an admirable subtlety.

What Linklater, Delpy and Hawke have achieved with their trilogy is at once fluidly cinematic and novelistic, with stories behind the stories and possible endings beyond the endings we're given.

The Before series has steadily gotten better as it goes along, which is more than any but the most optimistic among us dare to hope for from love.

Before Midnight is the fullest and richest and saddest of the three movies in the trilogy.

American cinema has only rarely produced a pair of entangled lovers as flawlessly lived-in and carefully observed.

What a remarkable film it is --- filled with laughter, love at its best and worst, and moments of poignancy that make you weep.

They could probably do a fourth film, call it "Before 3:15 A.M.", and still be more entertaining than most of the movies available today.

We're happy to go along for the ride.

Think of it, in the best way possible, as an intellectual's midlife crisis movie, which resonates all the more because we've known them - and aged along with them - for the last 18 years.

If [these characters are] less honest with each other, the film is, in turn, more honest about them.

Lacks the sweeping romanticism of "Before Sunrise," replaced by the realities of one's day-to-day existence in a world where things don't always turn out the way one imagines, or hopes. Such is life.

With this series, each film deepens the meaning and sensibility of the story so that now, as one whole, they are one of the most romantic stories in the history of film.

As witty and charming as ever, with a healthy raw dose of a marriage in trouble

Their discussions have the rhythm of real life, as likely to generate nods of recognition from couples in the audience as start a fight between them on the way home.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy come off as if they were conjoined for the past nine years in the gloriously-acted, hypnotically-conversational conclusion to the Before Sunrise trilogy -- the year's first legit contender for awards season love.

The last 40 minutes consisting of acute, sharp, and biting dialogue reminiscent of 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' make sitting through the excruciating first hour worth it.

Brilliant, mature third chapter to heartfelt romantic saga.

Truth is beauty, and beauty truth, but they're not necessarily romantic nine years into a serious committed relationship with two kids in the backseat.

Scott Weiland countersues Stone Temple Pilots

Scott Weiland in 2008.

Scott Weiland has struck back against Stone Temple Pilots, filing a countersuit last Friday against his former band. Earlier in May, Stone Temple Pilots sued their former singer accusing him of misusing the band's name to further his solo work and requested that a judge block him from using the group's name and catalog. Weiland is seeking at least $5 million in compensatory damages, and says his former bandmates conspired against him.

"How do you expel a man from a band that he started, named, sang lead on every song, wrote the lyrics and was the face of for 20 years, and then try to grab the name and goodwill for yourselves?" Weiland's complaint reads. "You don't, but three of the instrumentalists from the band 'Stone Temple Pilots' (the 'Band') tried."

Stone Temple Pilots sue Scott Weiland

As evidence, Weiland has highlighted a partnership agreement signed by Stone Temple Pilots in 1996, and amended in 2010 -- seemingly the same agreement cited by the band in their own lawsuit. Weiland argues the agreement allows each band member to perform on his own, and says the band kicked him to continue performing as Stone Temple Pilots; under the agreement, Weiland says, they would be forced to play under a different name if separate and apart from him.

Weiland maintains he had reached out to his bandmates multiple times, but his attempts at communication were ignored. He is seeking compensatory damages "in excess" of $5 million, along with statutory damages of up to $2 million for each "willful use" of the Stone Temple Pilots name "per mark, per type of goods or services sold, offered for sale or distributed." Stone Temple Pilots performed last month with Linkin Park's Chester Bennington on vocals, which would represent one count of Weiland's sought-after statutory damages.

Scott Weiland hits the road with new band

Before Weiland's countersuit, Stone Temple Pilots responded last week to fans' reactions regarding their lawsuit on their website. "Our purpose in taking this action is not to hurt Scott. We want to move forward productively, and Scott's choices and actions have prevented us from doing that," Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo and Eric Kretz wrote. "Without getting into legal details, the band has a binding agreement that clearly states what each of us can and cannot do outside of STP. Unfortunately many of the decisions Scott made violate this agreement, have been harmful to the band, and prevented us from moving forward."

Weiland was kicked out of Stone Temple Pilots in February and is currently touring as Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts, though he has tied the tour to his former band by naming it the "Purple at the Core" tour and performing Stone Temple Pilots songs. His next show is set for tomorrow night at the House of Blues in San Diego.

Surprises, rap's new class take over Summer Jam XX

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? New York City radio station Hot 97 celebrated its 20th annual Summer Jam concert with young rappers who are dominating the charts, a respected veteran hip-hop group and a slew of surprises.

Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Lil Kim were among the guest stars of Sunday's show at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky and French Montana performed sets that electrified the excited crowd. Wu-Tang Clan hit the stage and were solid, though the energy of the audience ? filled with a good number of twentysomethings ? dwindled throughout the set.

Here's a breakdown of the highlights from Summer XX, which also featured Chris Brown, Miguel, Wale, Fabolous and Joe Budden.

____

SURPRISE: IT'S WEEZY F. BABY AND RICKY ROZAY

No offense to French Montana, but Summer Jam XX would have been disappointing if the rapper closed the five-hour concert alone. Thankfully, he brought out Rick Ross ? and then to the largest roar the audience gave Sunday night ? there came Lil Wayne. They performed the addictive hit, "Pop That," as the crowd sang along and jumped up and down.

Bringing out a special guest (or guests) was the night's theme: Minaj earned cheers when she helped 2 Chainz on "I Luv Dem Strippers" and "Beez In the Trap," Fabolous brought out fellow Brooklynite Lil Kim and R&B singer Miguel had J. Cole and Mariah Carey help him with his set.

A$AP Rocky, 24, said he's a big fan of 90's hip-hop, namedropping acts like Wu-Tang Clan, N.W.A., UGK and Three 6 Mafia as favorites. But he wasn't all talk: Quickly after he spoke about his rap heroes, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony joined him onstage.

____

HIP-HOP'S NEW CLASS TAKES OVER

Hot 97 was celebrating 20 years of Summer Jam, but rappers in their twenties dominated the annual concert. Hip-hop's new class, including Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, French Montana and 2 Chainz (he's 35, but appeals to a younger audience), kept the crowd of thousands on their feet, performing back-to-back jams that have controlled urban radio in the last year.

Lamar, who is the critical darling of the bunch, was the best of the youngsters: He was cool onstage as he rapped songs from his near-platinum major label debut, "good kid, m.A.A.d city," including "Poetic Justice" and "(Expletive), Don't Kill My Vibe." He left out "Swimming Pools (Drank)," though that song would have been appropriate since the audience was drenched after it rained ? several times ? at the MetLife Stadium.

2 Chainz entered the stage rapping his verse from Kanye West's "Mercy," and he followed that with a number of radio hits, including "I'm Different," ''Birthday Song" and "No Lie." A$AP Rocky was wild onstage, and rap's new class showed the brotherly love when he was joined by Lamar and 2 Chainz for "(Expletive) Problems."

____

THAT WAS A LITTLE AWKWARD

Nicki Minaj is obviously confident ? not many people wear multi-colored wigs like she does. But on Sunday, things were just a little awkward for the rapper, and for a couple reasons.

Last year Minaj backed out of headlining Summer Jam after Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg dissed the rapper and her dance-pop hit, "Starships." Minaj debuted in 2009 deeply rooted in rap, but later she began to sing on her songs and found success with electronic-based tunes and collaborations with David Guetta. But the 30-year-old returned to the Summer Jam stage ? for mere minutes with 2 Chainz ? in a curly blonde wig and blue jeans. She exchanged words ? they seemed cordial ? with Rosenberg onstage after performing.

Minaj also performed on a stage where her enemies were also present: Her fellow and former "American Idol" judge, Mariah Carey, was in the building, as was Lil Kim, who feuded with Minaj when the rapper came on the music scene.

Who's got backstage video?

____

TOO YOUNG TO APPRECIATE?

Wu-Tang Clan, who also celebrated 20 years in music Sunday, showed no signs of slowing down with a set that felt both fresh and nostalgic. Too bad the crowd didn't think so.

The young audience grew excited during small parts of the rap group's set, and Ghostface Killah, Method Man, RZA, Raekwon and the other members seemed to notice.

"All we ask is that the energy we give to you, give it back to us," Method Man told the crowd.

"I think New York forgot about us a little, man," RZA said later.

Despite the some of the crowd's disinterest in the veteran group, they blazed the stage, performing jams like "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing ta (Expletive) Wit," ''Da Mystery of Chessboxin'" and "C.R.E.A.M."

Kids, do your rap research.

____

HIP-HOP'S COUSIN: THE R&B TREATS

Summer Jam is a rapper's show, but R&B held its own, thanks to Miguel and Chris Brown.

Miguel was silky, performing hits like "Sure Thing," ''How Many Drinks" and "Adorn" ? all as the crowd sang along. He earned more points when he brought out diva Mariah Carey to sing her new single, "Beautiful," where he is featured.

Brown, who has rapped on some of his songs, was bold when he hit the stage: He started with the European-flavored "Beautiful People," where he was backed with futuristic dancers and Auto-Tune. The crowd didn't fist pump, but they were pumped.

Brown was quick on his feet when performing "Fine China" and slowed things down for "Don't Judge Me." And while he first wore a Yankees jersey, he took it off to sing ? wait for it ? his R&B hit "Strip."

Angelina Jolie poses with Brad Pitt in London on Sunday.

Jolie joined partner Brad Pitt for the premiere of his new film, "World War Z," at Leicester Square in central London. Wearing a long, black Saint Laurent gown that criss-crossed at the chest and featured a sheer panel across her midriff, the actress smiled and waved to fans.

In an op-ed in the May 14 New York Times, Jolie revealed that she had undergone preventive surgery because she had been told she had an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer. She said her decision was informed by her mother's long fight and eventual death from breast cancer at 56.

The 37-year-old Oscar winner and humanitarian said in the Times that she carries a gene, BRCA1, that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

In an interview with Sky News from the red carpet Sunday, Jolie said she feels great. "I feel wonderful and I'm very very grateful for all the support. It's meant a lot to me." She said Pitt's support has been "extraordinary" and praised him as a "wonderful man and a wonderful father. I'm very very lucky."

Pitt was joined by fans and supporters around the world who praised Jolie for being heroic and for sharing the story of her very private ordeal.

He told Sky News that he was "very proud" of Jolie. "And I'm just relieved that that's not gonna be the thing that takes her out. The biggest fear as a father is keeping the family alive and safe and together and that she did that for us ... I get a bit teary eyed."

MSI's Primo 81 is a 7.85-inch tablet with the same display as the iPad mini (hands-on)

MSI's Primo 81 is a 785inch tablet with the same display as the iPad mini handson

It doesn't seem fair to call the MSI Primo 81 a KIRF iPad mini. Sure, it looks a helluva like Apple's smaller tablet, but it wouldn't be accurate to call it an imposter either. What we have here is a 7.85-inch Android slate that actually uses the same IPS, 1,024 x 768, LG-made display as the mini, putting it a step above a knockoff, if you ask us. In addition to those shared viewing angles, the Primo 81 has nearly identical dimensions, and it's almost as thin too (7.8mm thick vs. 7.2 on the mini). Even the matte finish is similar to the iPad's, and the build quality isn't bad either, even if it isn't quite on par with what Apple has to offer. As it happens, the Primo 81 isn't headed to the US, so the specs might be irrelevant to you, but in case you're tuning in from overseas, this thing runs Android 4.2, powered by a quad-core Allwinner A315 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 3,500mAh battery. No word yet on price or an on-sale date, unfortunately. In the meantime, we've got hands-on shots of that below, along with the similarly specced Primo 93, which takes after the iPad 4 with a 9.7-inch screen. With rubber accents on that one, though, you'd hardly mistake it for an Apple product.
