Congressman talks issues and philosophy at chamber breakfast ...

PLATTSBURGH ? Congressman Bill Owens says politicians need to change their way of thinking if more positive results are to occur in government.

?If I am re-elected we have to begin the process of talking about the facts ? and not ideology,? Owens (D-Plattsburgh) told a crowd at the North Country Chamber of Commerce breakfast at the Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh on?Friday.

?When you talk about the facts, sometimes you find out you are wrong ... but you have to have the intellectual capacity to (accept) that... That?s not something we do well, and that is not something the public accepts very well.?

Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, is seeking re-election in the 21st District, which covers 12 counties from Lake Ontario in the west to Lake Champlain in the east.

He is challenged by Republican Matt Doheny, an investor from Watertown who is also on the Conservative and Independence party lines. Owens is also on the Working Families Party ticket.

Donald Hassig of St. Lawrence County is also running as the Green Party candidate, but he lags far behind in any polls.

BIPARTISANSHIP

Owens spent a portion of his breakfast talk Friday speaking about the need to work in a bipartisan fashion in order to make improvements in government. He noted that he votes about 35 percent of the time with Republicans, and that he and Republican Chris Gibson of New York?s 19th District and Vermont?s Democratic Congressman Peter Welch, voted together most of the time on the House Agriculture Committee this year.

?The message was clear that we voted for our constituents and not the party, and that is something I hope to do more of,? Owens said.

In a separate interview, Doheny said Owens talks a good game but always sides with his party when it matters.

?I can tell you from my time in the private sector that I never closed a deal where one side got everything they wanted,? he told the Press-Republican.

?I plan to work with anyone, regardless of party, who advocates for solutions that will help improve our economy and get people back to work in the North Country. If Sen. (Charles) Schumer or Gov. (Andrew) Cuomo (both Democrats) comes up with a good idea, I?ll help them make it a reality.?

SUPPORTS FARMING

Owens also told the crowd that he is working to better agreements with Canada to improve border crossings so goods can move across faster without compromising security. He noted that the Canadian impact on the region is about $1.6 billion per year, which is as much as Fort Drum brings in near Watertown in the western part of the district.

He also said he found it interesting that Republican leadership in the House has called for a vote on the Farm Bill after the election instead of before. Owens has been pushing for a vote on the bill for much of this year, saying that without it, farming in the district could seriously be hampered.

?Agriculture is the largest gross domestic product in the 21st District, and we need to make sure farming businesses move forward with stability,? he said.

Doheny has also supported improved border practices and better conditions for farmers.

?EMPTY RHETORIC?

When asked what he would do about Medicare, Owens said he would focus on more preventive care and creating fewer hospital re-admissions.

?We also need to allow Medicare to negotiate its own prescription drug prices ? that could mean a savings of about $50 billion per year,? he said.

Doheny said President Barack Obama campaigned four years ago to let Medicare negotiate its own prescription drug deals but has dropped the idea.

?My opponent is recycling a broken promise, when he knows even the Democratic-led Senate won?t allow the idea to the floor. That is not happening ? just more empty rhetoric,? he said.

ECONOMIC GROWTH

While Owens said he is not in favor of raising the minimum wage at this time, he does support a ?trickle up? theory where the middle class can spur economic growth.

?We need to strengthen the middle class and push everybody up. That?s a concept that has been lost,? he said.

Doheny was not buying Owens?s theory, saying wages have fallen 5 percent or more in the district since Owens joined Congress in 2009.

He also said that average wages in the district are $696, more than 13 percent below the national average, and costs for gasoline and other staples have gone up.

?He wants to raise taxes on the job creators, who employ the very middle-class people he claims to want to help,? Doheny said.

?It just doesn?t make sense. We need lower taxes, less regulation, a stronger dollar and more opportunity here in the district. I will be an advocate for all individuals, regardless of income, in Congress.?

HASSIG ARRESTED

Hassig made news this week when he got arrested in Massena for refusing to leave Massena Memorial Hospital, where he was handing out information about breast-cancer carcinogen exposure minimization.

He has been arrested four times during the campaign so far, and the Green Party of New York state has distanced itself from him.

East Coast storm wreaks havoc on presidential race

CELINA, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama frantically sought to close the deal with voters with precious few days left in an incredibly close race as this year's October surprise ? an unprecedented storm menacing the East Coast ? wreaked havoc on their best-laid plans.

Ever mindful of his narrow path to the requisite 270 electoral votes, Romney looked to expand his map, weighing an intensified effort in traditionally left-leaning Minnesota. Obama sought to defend historically Democratic turf as the race tightened heading into the final week.

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, the two White House hopefuls reshuffled their campaign plans as the storm approached. Both candidates were loath to forfeit face time with voters in battleground states like Virginia that are likely to be afflicted when Hurricane Sandy, a winter storm and a cold front collide to form a freak hybrid storm.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.

Obama, preparing to depart for Florida Sunday, a day early to beat the storm, got an update from disaster relief officials before speaking by phone to affected governors and mayors.

"Anything they need, we will be there," Obama said. "And we are going to cut through red tape. We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules. We want to make sure that we are anticipating and leaning forward."

An opportunity for Obama to demonstrate steady leadership in the face of crisis was offset by the risk that the federal government, as in past emergencies, could be faulted for an ineffective response, with the president left to take the fall.

Obama canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with former President Bill Clinton at his side. He planned to return to Ohio on Wednesday with stops in Cincinnati and Akron, followed by a Thursday swing through Springfield, Ohio, Boulder, Colo., and Las Vegas.

Romney nixed three stops in up-for-grabs Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where Romney has chipped away at Obama's lead.

"I know that right now some people in the country are a little nervous about a storm about to hit the coast, and our thoughts and prayers are with people who will find themselves in harm's way," Romney told several hundred supporters crowded into a field house at the University of Findlay, the second of three Sunday rallies.

Romney's campaign confirmed Sunday that he would not travel to New Hampshire on Tuesday as planned. The campaign already canceled a Monday event in New Hampshire featuring Romney's wife, Ann. Advisers say further travel changes are likely as they monitor the storm's progress.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Monday event in New Hampshire. "The last thing the president and I want to do is get in the way of anything. The most important thing is health and safety," Biden said.

Ryan planned to leave Ohio at midday for three stops in Florida. His Tuesday schedule, however, shifted him to stops in Colorado instead of Virginia.

The prospect that bad weather could hinder early voting and get-out-the-vote efforts is vexing to both Obama and Romney.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," said David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign. "To the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

In Virginia, one of the most competitive states in the race, election officials eased absentee voting requirements for those affected by the storm.

"The state board of elections is already planning for extended hours in advance for absentee voting, and it's now a priority, moved up to the same level as hospitals and police stations to have power restored," said Gov. Bob McDonnell, a top Romney ally.

Bringing up a safety concern, Virginia Senate candidate Tim Kaine's campaign urged supporters to remove their political yard signs. "Due to the potential for strong winds in this storm, the last thing we want is for yard signs to become projectiles," said campaign manager Mike Henry.

Getting voters to the polls ? whether early or on Election Day ? is one of the few elements of the race still in the candidates' control. Although Romney and Obama are in a close contest for the popular vote, the president continues to have the upper hand in the most contested states.

Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman, pointed to recent gains for Romney that have lifted him to a virtual tie in most national polls. "The challenger always wins in a tie race," he said.

With time running out, both campaigns appeared to be fine-tuning their map of the states where they're campaigning the hardest.

A senior Republican official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations, said Sunday that the Romney team was seriously discussing sending Romney, Ryan or both to Minnesota during the final week. The state hasn't gone Republican in the presidential race since 1972, but recent polling shows a tighter race there than most anticipated.

In a flashback to the 2008 race, Obama's campaign announced that Biden will campaign Thursday in Pennsylvania, reprising a visit to his hometown of Scranton that he made during the final week four years ago. Pennsylvania, too, has been Democratic territory in recent years, but Romney has continued to contest the state with an advertising assist from the Republican Party.

Axelrod, Priebus and McDonnell spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Warner spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

(AP) ? Juggling politics and storm preparations, Mitt Romney dangled a plea for bipartisanship before early voters in Florida on Saturday as Barack Obama worked to nail down tiny New Hampshire's four electoral votes. Both campaigns scrambled to steer clear of a most unlikely October surprise, a superstorm barreling up the East Coast.

With just 10 days left in an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy had both campaigns ripping up carefully mapped-out itineraries as they worked to maximize voter turnout and avoid any suggestion that they were putting politics ahead of public safety.

The campaigns pressed every possible angle in search of advantage ? even paying attention to punctuation.

Obama's campaign signs for months have said: "Forward." Now they say: "Forward!"

Romney, who has been striking a more moderate tone as he courts women and independents in the campaign's home stretch, campaigned across Florida with a pledge to "build bridges" with the other party.

He coupled that message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision. Noting that Obama supporters like to chant "four more years" at the president's campaign rallies, Romney picked up on his crowd's own chant at the Pensacola Civic Center and said: "I like '10 more days' a lot better."

His warm-up act was more biting: Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told the crowd that Obama was advancing "the ideas of countries that people come here to get away from." Pressed later on what countries he was referring to, Rubio said, "any big-government country in the world" and specifically referred to Mexico and Latin America.

Obama hauled his campaign to New Hampshire, where he told volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester that: "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

It takes 270 electoral votes to win the election. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that are too close to call, New Hampshire among them.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees as governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama told a crowd of 8,500 gathered at an outdoor rally on an unseasonably warm October day.

The president said Romney even raised fees in Massachusetts on obtaining a birth certificate, "which would have been expensive for me." It was a veiled reference to opponents of the president who have incorrectly said he was born outside the United States. Copies of his birth certificate have been in high demand.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four battleground states: North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Romney scrapped plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, and switched his schedule for the day to Ohio. At a rally in Kissimee, Fla., he urged supporters to keep those in the storm's path "in your mind and in your hearts."

"You know how tough hurricanes can be," he told the Floridians.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow local officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns.

But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland. Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. They "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

Plans for son Beau Biden, the Delaware attorney general, to join his father in Virginia were scrapped when he was called up by the National Guard to help with the storm.

None of Obama's campaign stops had been canceled, but he did adjust move up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm.

En route to New Hampshire, Obama held an airborne conference call with administration officials about the federal government's role in minimizing storm damage and a ensuring speedy recovery effort.

Campaign spokesman Jennifer Psaki said the Obama team was continuing to promote early voting as something that provides flexibility for busy families, but she added that with the storm headed for shore, "safety comes first, and that's the case with early voting as well."

Romney's trip to Florida, with three events across the state, was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state that went for Obama four years ago and where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs this time. Both campaigns already have been working furiously to gain the advantage in the state's vote-by-mail program, an area where Republicans typically have been stronger.

"It helps for you to vote now," Romney told supporters in Kissimmee.

Republican Rep. Paul Ryan worked his way across rainy, chilly Ohio, on a two-day bus trip, with his family in tow. At a factory in New Philadelphia, Ryan stressed the hit that manufacturing industries have taken over the last four years and promised more coal jobs, natural gas jobs and increased military spending if Romney is elected.

Speaking to more than 1,000 supporters on the factory floor at Gradall Industries, Ryan told voters: "You know it's you. You know what you have in front of you. You know your responsibility."

Campaign 2012 was serious business, with so little time left and the storm complicating the end game, but Ryan's children helped to lighten the tone. His 7-, 9- and 10-year-olds scampered between parts bins and heavy chains at the factory.

Nine-year-old Charlie waved the peace sign and mugged for cameras, prompting his mother, Janna Ryan, to shake her head and declare, "I don't know where he gets it. It's kind of crazy."

During a later stop at a bakery in Circleville, Ohio, 10-year-old daughter Liz told the bakery clerk that her dad was "sugar-free except for doughnuts and ice cream."

"And apple-fritters," Ryan agreed.

Obama, for his part, made a stop at the Common Man Merrimack, a restaurant where he toasted patrons with a Common Man Ale, saying: "To voting. To America. Doesn't matter what party."

The campaigns and their allies kept up a steady stream of TV and radio ads in the battleground states. The right-leaning Americans for Job Security made a rare purchase of Philadelphia airtime, amounting to $1.2 million, for pro-Romney ads. While a few independent groups have tried to make Pennsylvania competitive for Romney, neither Obama nor Romney has devoted ad resources to the state, which is expected to go for Obama.

Kanex Sydnee

For many, the $149 (direct) Kanex Sydnee will seem like a superfluous item?who needs to be able to charge three iPads or other tablets simultaneously? Well, as Apple made clear in its latest iPad event, tablets are finding their way into more and more classrooms and businesses. That means multiple iPads in a single location, all of which will need regular juicing.?For those applications, the Sydnee makes sense, with a clean design that makes it easy to cradle and charge up to four devices, eliminating the mess of cables and lack of available power outlets. And though it's designed with iDevices in mind, the bring-your-own-cable design means it'll work with just about any USB powered device.?It's a little pricey, but if organization is a key concern, the Sydnee is a good solution.

Like many Apple-centric accessories, the Sydnee, available in black or white, adheres to a clean and modern design aesthetic. The smooth lines and glossy finish are attractive, but the stand is constructed from all plastic, so there's a little flex and rattle when you're swapping tablets in and out, but overall, it feels sturdy. There's a small lip on the front of the stand and an interior space that's separated into two compartments by a clear plastic divider. The stand can easily cradle three iPads, even in moderately bulky cases, and there's some rubber padding in the cradle spots, but not enough to fully protect your iPad if the stand gets jostled.

Inline

Around back are four USB ports, each delivering 2.1 amps of power, which is sufficient for all iPads, iPhones, and pretty much any USB-powered tablet or smartphone. Kanex includes three 16-inch 30-pin Apple cables, which, of course, won't be compatible with the 4th-generation iPad or the iPad mini without adapters. Fortunately, since the cables aren't built in, you can bring your own cable or add an adapter as necessary. There's a plastic arm on the back of the stand to wrap lengthy cords around, while a slotted rubber piece up top lets you thread and organize all the cables. A power cord extends from the back of the stand, which occupy a single power outlet.

In my tests, the Sydnee was able to charge three iPads simultaneously, with the fourth USB port open for, say, an iPhone or another USB-powered device. It also worked with various Android powered tablets. You'll only be able to use the outermost tablet while docked, and only in landscape orientation, since there is no cutout for the power adapter on the front lip.

At $150, the Kanex Sydnee does seem somewhat overpriced since it's essentially a 4-port USB hub (which you can get for about $20 online), married to a simple plastic tablet cradle. Still, you get three 30-pin cables in the box, and if you have multiple iPads or other tablets in a single location, the Sydnee will make storing and charging them an easy and organized affair. Otherwise, the appeal is, admittedly, a bit limited.?

What You Can Do To Improve Your Self Improvement - ProjectPB ...

You may be at a point in your life where if you do not change a negative behavior, you will start to lose relationships that mean a lot to you. What is the best place to start when it comes to self improvement? The below article provides some useful ideas on how you can invest in your own well-being and personal growth.

Do some reading on personal development. A good book can provide you with the information that you need to get started on your journey toward a new you. Many personal development books are poorly written, so pick one that has good reviews.

TIP! Make every day of your life the best that you can. Top yourself every day.

Don?t ignore your body?s signals when you are prioritizing your personal development goals. Your body has a natural intelligence and will let you know when you need to eat to curb hunger, to drink to satisfy thirst, to stop eating because you?re full, and other needs to which you should give attention. When you take care of yourself, you will find less medical problems in the future. If you disregard your body?s intelligence, you might find in the future that it will not be able to take care of you.

A great self improvement tip is to always use love to fuel your faith. This will help you focus on the things that are truly important. You will also make decisions guided by your core beliefs. Serve others when they need help, and commit yourself to doing things that demonstrate your love.

Everyone needs to exercise, not just people who want to lose weight. There are many physical reasons for the need to exercise. It stimulates different areas of your body into producing hormones that make us happier and calmer.

TIP! Incorporate your belief system into daily living. Everyone has certain beliefs that reinforce their sense of self at the core.

Are you causing yourself unnecessary stress? It?s best to train yourself to cope with your daily stress, and it begins with analyzing every situation where you tend to feel strained. If you make a mistake, own up to it, fix it, and move on. See the glass as half-full rather than half-empty.

A great self help tip to deal with anxiety is to accompany a friend to the movies. You will be out and about but you don?t have to talk a lot or even see who you?re with most of the time. It can also be an effective way for you to become more comfortable with being near a large group of people.

Getting healthy is a major factor of personal development. Eating right and working out are part of the equation, but motivation is the real key. When it?s important for you to stay healthy and you do so, you will feel better and it can help improve other areas of your life.

TIP! Don?t waste your energy on the small things. If you focus all of your thoughts on the things that really matter and quit dwelling on the negative things that do not matter at all, you are sure to find a greater inner peace.

Don?t overexert yourself physically when you are trying to achieve your goal. Although you should always try your best, you should also be aware of your limitations. You should take care of yourself when you are working towards a goal. If you sacrifice the needs of your body, it will greatly hinder your personal development.

You must determine what you would like to achieve in your life. Once you?ve done this, get out there and do it. Just sitting around doing nothing to make the life you want actually happen will get you nowhere. Take action, and turn your dreams into reality.

Instead of bragging about how many things you?ve earned in your life, try to ask other people about what they?ve earned in their life and what they?re proud of. You will be amazed to hear some of the wonderful and interesting things the people around you have done in their lives, and you will earn new respect for them by understanding their true character.

TIP! You should always strive to be the best in your area. Follow your passions if you want to be truly great.

Learn to care for others for a shift in your own personal growth. Knowing what it means to care for and help others, by making the sacrifices within yourself, can greatly benefit your inner character. When you can decide to make a sacrifice that will help another person, and it doesn?t end up jeopardizing your well being, then you will become the person you?ve been searching for.

Personal development can be a difficult and laborious process, but it?s worth every second. However, if you make a good effort and establish a strong support system, you are sure to be successful in your self improvement journey. The tips in this article will serve as a good starting point.

Don?t be disorganized anywhere in your life. When you are organized, you will improve your confidence and feel accomplished in many different areas of your life. An additional benefit is that the stress you felt from disorganization will be eliminated. Having everything in its rightful place will give you a sense of calm and ease.

AP basketball poll: Indiana is preseason No. 1

Tom Crean didn't look like any of the other people in the Maui airport that day.

He had just coached his third, fourth and fifth games in his first season at Indiana. He looked how you would expect a coach to look after losing games by 38 and 26 points, then managing to beat Division II Chaminade in the seventh-place game of the Maui Invitational by only two points. The Silverswords got off a possible game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Others waiting for flights to the mainland on the day before Thanksgiving in 2008 were wearing leis and flowered shirts and were carefully carrying pineapples. Not Crean. He had a lot of things on his mind and looked like he was ready to blow the whistle and start practice.

"This is going to take a while," Crean said at the time. "We can do it. This place has so much in so many ways."

He was standing and pacing now, the way he piles up the miles on the sideline.

"We can do this," he said. "We can do this."

Not many people would have believed it then. They do now. Another step in the return of the fabled Hoosiers program came Friday as Crean is about to start his fifth season in Bloomington.

Indiana was ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press' preseason Top 25, a first for the Hoosiers since 1979-80, when they were coached by Bob Knight and the 3-point line was still in the experimental phase.

The Hoosiers and their fans are quite familiar with the next two teams in the voting: Louisville and Kentucky.

The three schools are from the basketball-rabid area known as "Kentuckiana." Nos. 1, 2 and 3 are all within an easy drive of each other and they are schools which have known basketball success over the years and recently, as well.

The Hoosiers, who return all five starters including 7-foot sophomore Cody Zeller, received 43 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel. Indiana is a preseason No. 1 for the third time.

Louisville, which reached the Final Four last season, and Kentucky, the reigning national champions who beat Indiana in the regional semifinals and Louisville in the national semifinals, received the rest of the first-place votes. Louisville was No. 1 on 20 ballots and the Wildcats got the other two.

Louisville has most of the team back from last season including Gorgui Dieng, a defensive force in the middle. Kentucky, on the other hand, has another roster full of talented freshmen after four players left early and were taken in the first round of the NBA draft including overall No. 1 and 2 picks Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

This is the fifth time that Indiana, Louisville and Kentucky were all ranked in the preseason top 10. The last time was 1982-83 when Kentucky was No. 4, Louisville No. 8 and Indiana was ninth.

Indiana's other preseason No. 1 was in 1975-76 when the Hoosiers put together the last unbeaten run to a national championship.

Ohio State and Michigan joined Indiana as Big Ten teams ranked in the top five. The last time a conference had three teams in the preseason top five was 2008-09 when Connecticut, Louisville and Pittsburgh of the Big East were second, third and fifth, respectively.

North Carolina State, Kansas, Duke, Syracuse and Florida round out the top 10.

North Carolina led the second 10 and was followed by Arizona, UCLA, Michigan State, Missouri, Creighton, Memphis, UNLV, Baylor and San Diego State.

The last five ranked teams were Gonzaga, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Cincinnati and Florida State.

The Big Ten led the way with five teams in the preseason poll, while the Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference had four each. Along with the Southeastern Conference's three teams, those four leagues accounted for 16 of the 25 teams.

Crean took over an Indiana program in 2008-09 that had plenty of history ? five national championships ? and a lot of current problems. Only two players returned from a team that was facing NCAA discipline over a phone call scandal that led to the ouster of coach Kelvin Sampson.

The program was back on the national scene last season when Christian Watford's 3-pointer at the buzzer beat No. 1 Kentucky and the fans rushed the court at Assembly Hall. Three straight losing seasons seemed long ago as the Hoosiers added two more wins over teams ranked in the top five and got back in the NCAA tournament.

Now Crean has a team that will start the season No. 1

"It's great. Those things are great," Crean said. "I think now, it's just so much about the daily challenge of getting better. That to me is what the focus is. It's a big deal, but you don't get any banners for your preseason rankings. You've got to go out and you've got to earn it every day. I think that's what this team is really doing a good job of, and I know it's early, but they're doing a good job of it."

Duke has the longest current streak of consecutive poll appearances at 97, a run that started with the preseason poll of 2007-08. Kansas has the second-longest current run at 65 weeks.

Marketing 2.0: Combining Forces of Marketing and Customer Service

The tension between Marketing and Customer Service?

In my professional past, I have worked at Marketing and Customer Service and I never quite understood the tension between the two. In an obvious case of hyperbole, I would like to state the following.

Marketing tries to improve sales by targetting ?the persona customer?, losing sight of the individual customers as they go along. Customer service is always busy answering all individual questions which never seem to fit in the bodice Marketing imposed, and as such, have difficulty in believing what Marketing is telling them to do.

?

Why Marketing and Customer Service will soon be BFF's

Now, before you go yelling at your colleagues of the other business unit, I have good news: Marketing and Customer Service are going to be best friends forever, real soon! Yep, BFF?s. Why? Because your customer has taken control. How? A team-up of public social media with ever more mobile internet.?

?

Social media forces Marketing and Customer Service to change?

Marketing has, for too long and too much, been about pushing products down customer?s throats in a shouting action. ?Hear, hear, we have the best product for this-and-that and as you cannot compare it to any other on the market: buy it, and buy it now.? Well, that?s a thing of the past. Customers are investigating now what they are buying, and teaming up together on Facebook, Twitter and lots of other networks. There is no use anymore in spending money on Marketing campaigns for unnecessary or bad ?products if customers can break it with a short personal text, tell all their friends about it and go public in a matter of clicks.

Marketing was about shouting

Customer Service has been responding to individuals in a one-on-one relationship. As no one else was listening during those conversations, the customer was sometimes cut loose. ?OK, something got messed up, but you are not important enough, so shut up and move along. Ne-eext!? Before you bash on Customer Service: the people there don?t like doing this, their management just forces them to do so as they believed giving in to the customer?s needs was like giving in to terrorists. Well, it may seem hard to believe, but there is in fact a slight difference. :)

It's the customers that make a business successful. No buyers, no business. No happy customers, no long-term business. And as those customers are now talking to everyone quadrupled instantly about you, you?d better start listening to what they have to say. Or they will bye-bye you in the blink of an eye.

Customer service becomes foundation of marketing

Customer Service becomes the foundation of Marketing

And this makes my point: through social media, Customer Service is becoming the foundation of Marketing. In my humble opinion, Marketing 2.0 is all about ?listening and communicating with your customers, to learn from their experiences, better fit their needs and as such ameliorate your business and products.? Social media is the way in which it happens. The way, not the means: no use in having tons of fans if no one is listening.?

If you have built an audience on social media, and you are responding to their remarks, questions and sometimes filthy words, you can start shouting again. Or better, you can start speaking again, because you will have an audience that will be listening to you. This means: Marketing with a much higher ROI, no shooting in the dark anymore. And in the meantime, you gain lots of information about those customers.?The use of an all-in-one social media management tool is a huge help here.

In the end, it is a win for all: for customers and for businesses. But it takes a leap of faith and quite some rethinking of your business to attain it. Good luck!

Tornado, rain and snow hit Northern California

Northern California finally got weather to match the calendar, as a storm smacked the area Monday bringing rain, snow and at least one tornado.

The twister touched down about 3:15 p.m. a couple of miles south of Yuba City, and bounced from Sutter County into Yuba.

It took shingles off houses and hit the Mallard Lake Golf Course, where a golfer told the Marysville Appeal Democrat that it snapped a tree that struck him.

Sutter County Fire Department Battalion Chief John Shalowitz said firefighters could see the tornado touch down from their station in a mostly rural area about two miles south of Yuba City.

"It's a lot of telephone and cable lines down, but thankfully nobody was hurt," he told The Associated Press. "We have some roofing material that has been stripped from a couple of houses. A lot of trees down in the area."

The tornado followed earlier reports from the National Weather Service that it's radar had picked up a possible twister about nine miles southeast of Palermo. A number of funnel cloud sightings were reported as the storm moved northeast, including a call from the area of Loafer Creek on Lake Oroville.

As of deadline, there was no conformation that the funnel had touched down.

Even those distant from the wildest weather experienced something missing from the area for a long time: rain.

Chico saw 1.06 inches of rain, Oroville 0.85 inch and Paradise 1.78 inches.

It was the first time there's been measurable precipitation in Chico

since June 4, when 0.14 inch fell.

In the mountains as much as two feet of snow fell. The road through Lassen Volcanic National Park was closed, and snowplows were needed to keep Interstate 80 open.

Where Should I Start In My Homebuying Process? | REALTOR.com ...

questions

Q: I am looking to buy my first home by June 2013 in Covington- Conyers, Ga, I have started working on my credit and saving money for my down payment. What else should I be doing or what are the next steps I should be taking?
?Quentisha, Covington, GA

A: Good for you to be planning ahead so well! It is never too early to start talking to professionals in this industry who can guide you. I would contact a few buyers agents (preferable exclusive buyers agents) in your area to discuss their methods and procedures and get some useful tips. And I would ask for recommendations from them and your friends as to a few good lenders in your are area who can advise you what things to avoid (new credit cards, for example, or charging over 50% of your credit limit). These things can impact your credit score a great deal. I would not go to a builder?s office or attend an open house without my own agent, either. These actions can impact what your agent will be paid if you then later want to buy the home. Best of luck to you!
Linda Walters is a Realtor? with Sage Realty LLC in Wayne, PA.

A: Talk with a mortgage Broker to get pre-approved for a loan and meet with a Realtor(r) to learn about the process so you can hit the ground running when the time is right.
Paul Aspelin is a Realtor? with Beyond Homes Realty LLC in Victoria, MN.

A: Keep on saving and keep your credit as good as you can. First thing you will want to do is talk to a lender so you can see what your buying power is. I would suggest the looking process should start in Feb/Mar of next year if you are looking to settle in June.

Best of Luck with everything!

UCI, other researchers discount previous theories about origins of infrared glow

Irvine, Calif., Oct. 24, 2012 Isolated stars kicked to the edges of space by violent galaxy mergers may be the cause of mysterious infrared light halos observed across the sky, according to UC Irvine and other astronomers.

"Background glow in our sky has been a huge unanswered question," said UCI physics & astronomy professor Asantha Cooray, lead author of a paper about the discovery in the Oct. 25 issue of the journal Nature. "We have new evidence that this light is from stars that linger between galaxies. Individually, they're too dim to be seen, but we think we're seeing their collective blush."

Cooray and colleagues examined 250 hours of data captured by NASA's powerful Spitzer Space Telescope from a large swath of sky called the Botes field, which covers the equivalent of 40 full moons near the constellation of the same name. The large scale allowed the researchers to better analyze the patterns of diffuse light.

"Studying this faint background was one of the core goals of our survey, and we carefully designed the observations in order to directly address this important, challenging question," said co-author Daniel Stern of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

The team concluded that the infrared glow, while weak, is too strong to be consistent with earlier theories that it's being emitted by the very first celestial bodies. "The glow is just too bright to be from those ancient, far-off galaxies and stars," said UCI doctoral student and co-author Joseph Smidt.

Instead, the scientists have a new theory, saying it's "intracluster" or "intrahalo" starlight. Early in the history of the universe, as galaxies grew, they collided and bulked up in mass. As the crashing galaxies became gravitationally tangled, strips of stars were shredded and tossed into space as leftovers. Galaxies also grow by "swallowing" dwarf neighbors, a messy process that likewise results in stray stars. Cosmologists believe these orphaned stars produce the diffuse, blotchy smatterings of light that make up galaxy halos extending well beyond the outer reaches of galaxies.

Additional research is needed to confirm the theory. But the researchers say it makes sense. "A lightbulb went off when we were reading earlier papers predicting the existence of diffuse stars," Cooray said. "They explain what we're seeing with Spitzer."

Presidential Debate News: Thing in Florida Presumed Boring

The third and final presidential debate will occur this evening at nine p.m. in Boca Raton, Florida. Or, according to Boca?s thriving senior population, the third and final presidential debate will occur today in the middle of the goddamn night, for some reason, even though some people can?t stay up late like they used to. Huh? Obama? What are you going to do about that? Morty Ambramoff forwarded an e-mail from his grandson, the gay doctor, on just this topic. Israel.

The topic of tonight?s discussion: foreign policy, the fourth-most popular policy after ?domestic,? ?ladies enter free before midnight,? and ?five-second.? And just how little do Americans care to hear their leaders discuss foreign policy? The New York Times reports: ?In recent polls of three battleground states, Colorado, Virginia and Wisconsin, fewer than 10 percent of voters in each state said national security was the most important issue to them, ranking below the economy, deficit, and health care.? On the other hand, the most amusing moment of the prior debates was, tangentially, related to Libya. Perhaps tonight?s stumbles will prove equally watchable? Join us live on Twitter (@VanityFair) beginning in the middle of the goddamn night as we publicly hope so.

Long Island man beats fungal meningitis; Cancer specialist solves a diagnostic puzzle that appeared to be brain cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Thinking he had only months to live, Frank Tarantino, 67, of Amityville, N.Y., a retired electrician, father of four and grandfather of seven, was getting his affairs in order in the winter of 2011. Doctors believed he had a lethal brain tumor. Tarantino, a prostate cancer survivor, had just finished treatment for breast cancer in late 2010. One consulting physician, Shenhong Wu, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and an oncologist at the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, could not conclude Tarantino had cancer. The question remained in Dr. Wu's mind: If not cancer, what could this be?

Tarantino, not under Dr. Wu's care at the time, was diagnosed by other oncologists with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a type of tumor that spreads from the breast. Patients with this form of cancer often live only two-to-three months. Because of the grim prognosis and Dr. Wu's lingering doubts on a definitive diagnosis, Tarantino decided not to undergo treatment.

Fast-forward months later: After intermittent episodes that included headaches, fatigue, vertigo/dizziness, and sometimes confusion, Tarantino was rushed to a hospital near his home. New symptoms included increased confusion, low-grade fever, and hearing loss. Physicians at the hospital called Dr. Wu, who promptly made a recommendation.

"I suggested that they check his spinal fluid for possible infection," said Dr. Wu. "With his additional symptoms, increased severity of them, and the fact that he survived those months with what appeared to be a cancerous brain tumor, it seemed infection was a strong possibility."

The spinal fluid tested positive for Cryptococcus, a type of fungus that can cause serious and sometimes deadly systemic infections. Particularly vulnerable are patients treated for cancer or chronic illnesses where treatments and/or the disease itself compromise the patient's immune system. Most common in AIDS patients, Cryptococcal fungal meningitis cases have increased globally during the past decade. National health data estimates the incidence to be approximately 1,500 cases annually in the U.S. Fungal infections are of particular concern to clinicians when they become systemic, such as in the blood or neurological system.

"This was a tricky diagnosis," explained Dr. Wu. He was not convinced Tarantino had brain cancer, based on the imaging of his brain lesions and his fluctuating symptoms. He remained concerned that potentially unnecessary and ineffective treatment for brain cancer would make Tarantino, already immunocompromised by cancer treatments, dangerously ill.

"Originally, Mr. Tarantino's case seemed like cancer because the lesions on his brain did appear like tumors, some of his symptoms pointed toward brain cancer, and he had a significant history of cancer," said Dr. Wu. "However, I did not think everything matched up to be cancer, so I could not conclude it was cancer," who provided his medical opinion to Tarantino, previously treated for prostate and breast cancer at other hospitals.

Tarantino's family stayed in touch with Dr. Wu. The Stony Brook oncologist centered on several initial tests results.

"The tests showed Mr. Tarantino had atypical cells in the spinal fluid, mostly T lymphocyctes and monocytes," said Dr. Wu. "These results are an indication that something abnormal is occurring, but they are not definitive markers for cancer or infection. Although a small chance, infection seemed like a possibility."

The original diagnosis was a blow to Tarantino and his wife of 43 years, Rosanne, as well as his entire family, all of them living on Long Island.

"I started to get my things in order because the writing was on the wall -- I would not be around for much longer," said Tarantino. "I was just feeling better when the episodes began to happen."

A retiree who had spent more than 30 years working as an electrician, Tarantino had a busy family life and stayed active by working on projects, such as refurbishing old cars from the 1960s and 70s. His life slowed down when he was treated for prostate cancer but completed treatments in 2006. Two years later, he was diagnosed with breast cancer, completing his treatment by the end of 2010. Back to his life in early 2011, though still recovering from breast cancer treatment, the intermittent episodes began.

Once Tarantino was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital in August 2011, Dr. Wu alerted Roy T. Steigbigel, MD, Distinguished Service Professor at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and an infectious diseases specialist. Under Dr. Steigbigel's care, Tarantino was treated for Cryptococcal fungal meningitis.

Tarantino's infection was advancing quickly and spreading within his brain. He required immediate, aggressive, and long-term antifungal treatments in the hospital.

"It took months to get that crazy infection under control, but the doctors at Stony Brook did it and eventually I started feeling like myself again," said Tarantino. "It really was miraculous, and I am grateful that Dr. Wu continued to think that I did not have brain cancer."

Tarantino remains free of prostate and breast cancer. He continues to take antifungal medication and is followed by Drs. Wu and Steigbigel.

With restored health and energy, Tarantino and Rosanne are on the go. Last spring they enjoyed one of their son's weddings, and this past summer traveled to Las Vegas and Mexico.

"I have been through a lot, and my body took a beating, but each week I feel stronger," said Tarantino. "Maybe soon I can get back to restoring the old cars and start with the 1966 Chevy Chevelle."

Systemic Fungal Infections and Research at Stony Brook

Systemic fungal infections are serious and sometimes life-threatening conditions, especially in immunocompromised patients such as those with cancer, AIDS, and other chronic illnesses. While effective in certain cases against systemic disease, current antifungal medications have shortcomings. Many drugs are highly toxic. Agents that attack fungal pathogens also target the wrong (and healthy) cells because the cells of humans are similar in structure to that of fungi.

New research in Stony Brook University's Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology has led to discoveries that offer potential new approaches to treating systemic fungal infections.

Dr. Maurizio Del Poeta investigates Crytococcal neoformans. Dr. Del Poeta has found that the role of certain lipid molecules, particularly sphingolipids, located on the surface of this fungus, is essential in the development of cryptococcal meningitis. He has discovered new drugs that target the synthesis of these fungal lipid molecules, thus preventing fungal meningitis. His discovery offers a potential new approach to treating systemic fungal infections.

Dr. James Konopka investigates Candida albicans, which can cause lethal systemic infections. Dr. Konopka's research has shown that a novel type of structure in the cell membrane of Candida known as the MCC/eisosome represents a promising new target for therapeutic intervention.

Do Restraining Orders Work?

Police outside the Azana Salon and Spa where three people were killed in a mass shooting on Sunday in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Radcliffe Franklin Haughton opened fire in the Wisconsin spa where his wife worked on Sunday, killing her and two others before turning the gun on himself. Haughton was under a restraining order that his wife had won earlier in the month after he slashed her tires and threatened to burn her with gas. Do restraining orders work?

Yes, but not immediately. Sunday?s shooting in Wisconsin is an extreme example of one problem with protective orders: They don?t seem to work in the short term. For example, in a study of domestic abuse victims in Washington state, protective orders did not reduce the recurrence of violence until four months after the initial attack. In the first few months, psychological abuse is actually more common among those who obtain legal protection than those who do not. Over the long term, however, protective orders appear to work very well. Permanent protective orders decrease the incidence of domestic abuse by 80 percent over the course of a full year following the initial abuse.

It?s not clear why protective orders have a delayed effect. It?s possible that abusers are so psychologically unsettled in the heat of a domestic dispute that criminal sanctions don?t immediately deter them. Advocates for domestic abuse victims argue that these data show judges must take extra precautions in the face of credible threats, such as GPS monitors that notify the victim when the attacker is near.

This is an active field of research with many disagreements.?Dozens of studies employing nearly as many different methodologies address the effectiveness of protective orders. Many researchers simply compare the abuse rates before and after a victim obtains the order. The abuse rate inevitably drops, but that doesn?t mean the order caused the change. The victim might have moved out of the abuser?s home or otherwise cut ties with him during this period. More sophisticated studies compare the rate of reported violence for women who obtained protective orders and those who had their petitions denied. The problem here is that those two groups are fundamentally different: A judge determined that the latter women didn?t show sufficient evidence that they were in danger.

Despite all this uncertainty, most researchers urge victims to seek protective orders because studies consistently show they make women feel safer. In one study, 86 percent of participants believed that the restraining order helped. Most women are satisfied with the order even if the attacker violates it. Although subjective, that result is an important endpoint. Women who believe the protective order is working report better sleep and fewer days of stress.

(AP) ? A Wisconsin man who had been accused of domestic violence and slashing his wife's tires took a gun into the spa where she worked Sunday and shot seven women, three fatally, before killing himself, a police chief said.

The shootings set off a confusing, six-hour search for the gunman that locked down a nearby mall, a country club adjacent to the spa and the hospital where the survivors were taken. The search froze activity in a commercial area in Brookfield, a middle-to-upper class community west of Milwaukee, for much of the day. Ultimately, he was found dead in the spa.

Authorities said it would take time to sort out exactly what happened, and emphasized they were still interviewing witnesses and rescuers and did not have a firm timeline of events. At a news conference Sunday night, Mayor Steve Ponto called the shootings "a senseless act on the part of one person."

The chaos started around 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from a major shopping mall. The first officers on the scene found the building filled with smoke from a fire authorities believe was set by the suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said.

They also found a 1-pound propane tank they initially thought might be an improvised explosive device, Tushhaus said. That slowed the search of the building as law enforcement agents waited for a bomb squad to clear the scene.

Tushaus said later that police didn't know whether the gunman brought the propane tank to the spa or it was left by a contractor.

The search also was complicated by the layout of the building, with numerous small treatment rooms and several locked areas, Tushaus said. While officers initially thought the gunman had fled the building, they later found his body in one of the locked areas, he said.

The bodies of the victims were also found in the spa. Tushaus said investigators were still working to identify them. He said the four survivors were between the ages of 22 and 40. He didn't know if they were employees at the spa or customers, and it wasn't clear if the man's wife was among the victims.

Haughton had recently been arrested after witnesses identified him as the person who slashed his wife's tires, police said.

He appeared in court Thursday. A four-year restraining order was issued, and Haughton was ordered to turn any firearms over to the sheriff's department.

Haughton's father, Radcliffe Haughton, Sr., spoke to a television station and The Associated Press shortly before police announced that they had found his son's body. In telephone interviews from Florida, he said he had last spoken to his son a few days ago, but didn't have any indication anything was wrong. He begged his son to turn himself in.

After learning of his son's death, he said only: "This is very sad."

A sea of ambulances and police vehicles collected at the scene shortly after the shooting. A witness, David Gosh of nearby West Allis, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he was returning from duck hunting with his father and a friend when he saw a woman emerge from the spa, screaming, as she ran into traffic.

"She ran right out into the street was pounding on cars," Gosh told the newspaper. Moments later, a man with a handgun ran out. He appeared to be chasing the woman but then went back inside, Gosh said.

At the hospital where the victims were taken, staff members were escorted inside during the temporary lockdown and critically injured patients were accepted with a police escort. Officers were stationed at entrances.

The hospital released a statement saying two women had undergone surgery, and one was in critical condition. Another was expected to have surgery Sunday night.

The shooting investigation and manhunt paralyzed a normally bustling shopping district. Inside the mall across the street from the spa, people waited patiently for updates. Gina Kralik, a bartender at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, said people had been allowed to leave at one point but then police had decided not to let anyone come or go from the mall.

"We're just sitting watching the news and also trying to find out what's going on," she said about 3 p.m.

Austin Della, 17, was working at a department store in the mall when he heard announcements over the loudspeaker asking people to move their cars out of one parking lot. The mall was then locked down for almost three hours, he said, and customers joked about the good service they would get as the only clients in the store.

"Everyone was really calm," Della said. "If not for all the announcements, I don't think anyone would have known that anything was happening."

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.
